Making It In The Music Business:The Insider Secrets
I have been in the music business for over 10 years. I've
read several books on the music business. When I heard about this new book called Making It In The Music Business:The Insider Secrets, I felt that I had to read this book. The first thing that I notice was that this book was written by musicians, not an attorney, like most of the other music books that are out there. The book broke down how hit songs are written, how often an artist is paid, what percentage the artist/writer's are paid, a business plan, and much, much more!!! This book is a must read by all musicians, artist, and performers. -Christina Mcnair

Good PACE
As most of you MBA students will need to purchase this book because it's required, you probably have reservations about keeping it. After taking Isaak's class I can tell you that this was one of the most fascinating perspectives on the post cold war environment since reading "The Lexus and The Olive Tree". I'd suggest you actually read this one.

The organizational unconscious : how to create the corporate culture you want and need

How to train a sleeping monster.
I have read numerous books over the years on corporate culture and more specifically normative culture. Each time I have been left with many unanswered questions. For me, the whole concept of controlling something so esoteric has always been hard to conceptualize. Organizational Unconscious is the first book to give me a clear and easily understood roadmap for controlling the culture in any organization. 95% of all managers, in my opinion, are completely unaware of the power and influence culture has on any organization's programs and performance. After reading this book, they may wish to significantly redefine their priorities.

Must-have for ur office
10 years have passed and I'm still using this great dictionary ! It's one of the best English dictionaries ever produced. It's a comprehensive dictionary of current English, and is written in a straightforward and readable style.
Features:

- It has numerous encyclopedic articles covering a wide range of subjects e.g. current affairs, important people throughout history, science and technology, medicine, history, the arts, philosophy, mythology, sport, places like countries.
- Chronology of world historical events. Sometimes when I feel bored, I just open the dictionary and start to read this attractive section !
- It has some clear grammar and usage of a word (but not compared to Longman's Dictionary).
- It contains word origins, which makes me rush to open it if I want to learn more about the origin of a word.
- Appendices containing: Countries of the World, The Commonwealth, States of the USA, The British islets and constitution, The US constitution, the UN, the European Community, Kings and Queens of England and the UK, Prime Ministers and Presidents, World map section in color, and more !

An account of a nation becoming an international power
Writing after the fact, historians often conclude that a war was preventable. This is generally false, as the dispassionate writer is removed from the context of the times. The war in 1812 between the United States and Great Britain has often been viewed as a pointless, forgettable war, yet in fact it had enormous consequences. The war was the defining moment of the Madison presidency and a significant break from the policy of the previous Jefferson and early Madison administrations. In describing the war, Rutland is masterful in describing the context and emotions of the times, the combination of which caused a war that was inevitable.
At the time, the Napoleonic wars were raging on the European continent and both Britain and France sought to wring every advantage they could out of what they considered an upstart nation. For years, Jefferson and Madison tried every tactic they could short of war in an attempt to delay a call to arms. Finally, national pride won out over all other factors and the war began. Madison's conduct of the war was not nearly as effective as it could have been, and yet the tie was all that was needed. James Monroe, the successor to Madison, enunciated what is now known as the Monroe doctrine, which warned all nations to avoid colonization efforts in the Western Hemisphere. With little American sea power to back it up, it was the first example of cooperation between Britain and the United States, as the enforcement was due to the power of the British navy. It is doubtful that this could have happened without the war.
The ways in which Rutland places the war in the context of power struggles in Europe and in the United States is masterful, as he describes how fragmented the United States was in those years. It is also possible to see the seeds of an eventual split and internal war, not over the issue of slavery, but over commercial and social differences.
In so many ways, Madison's best years were behind him when he became president. And yet, his handling of the war of 1812 was most likely the best that could have been done, as he sought to defend a fractious nation against an old foe who afterward became a staunch ally. For that reason alone, his administration should be considered a success and this book is the most realistic appraisal of his years in the White House that I have ever seen.

One of the Last Voices of Hope and Idealism
This is a wonderful book that is filled with hope that is in despereate need for those of us who have grown up since Watergate and Bill Clinton. Senator Kennedy's 1966 South Africa speech("The Day of Affirmation") and his powerfully truthful message at Los Angeles' Greek Theater on March 24, 1968 gives young people an idea of a long-ago time when people really believed in politicians and politicians really believed in the people. Hopefully, younger generations may be inspired by this so that one day, we can beleive in each other again!

If Words Could Move Mountains ...
You can hear the compassion and conviction in Bobby's voices. I have listened to these two tapes many times over... I've read the speeches in text ... but nothing is like listening to Bobby's voice, slightly shaken, slightly rushed, but always genuine and sincere. Bobby Kennedy is an American leader. Though his short life span did not allow him to accomplish enough, his vision and integrity examplified what spiritual growth could be. Even with all the mistakes he might have made, you could never doubt his conviction and his good will towards all mankind. Listen to his voice, not just his words ... and let his voice give you a desire to give more than what you are required ... to live for something greater than ourselves. Even in death, Bobby left the youths of every generation the challenge, a torch to carry on.

Sunbirds, spiderhunters, flowerpeckers, and sugarbirds.
I bought and read this book with enthusiasm because of my 35 years living and travelling in Africa, where sunbirds predominate. The illustrations are excellent and the text is as well. This is probably the most colorful of all the family books being issued by Yale, Princeton, and Oxford. Following Sibley and Monroe's DNA analysis, they have finally but the two African sugarbirds in the Sunbird family, with only generic status. They have previously been put as far away as Honeyeaters and Starlings. It would be lovely if the range maps could be put on the pages facing the illustrations, to help differentiate birds of similar appearance, but I guess this was not possible. The maps themselves are very good. Altogether, one of the best family books and a must for collectors.
