A compelling, true-life account
Jim's Journey: A Wake Island Civilian POW's Story is the compelling, true-life account of James A. Allen and his survival of 1,354 days of imprisonment as a civilian prisoner of war after being captured by the Imperial Japanese navy in December 1941 when the Marine garrison on Wake Island was finally overwhelmed. Jim was held in Japanese POW camps in China, Korea, and Japan. In addition to his eye-witness account of life as a POW, Jim's Journey also relates what happened to him when he was finally liberated and returned to America. It would be thirty-seven years before the U.S. government would official recognize that Jim and other eligible civilian POWs for their contributions to the dramatic defense of Wake Island against insurmountable hostile forces. Jim's Journey is a welcome and much appreciated contribution to the history of POW experiences arising from World War II in the Pacific Theater.

This "Journey" is an inspiration!
This is the story of a civilian POW contracted to help build a naval air base on Wake Island shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor. It is a thoroughly researched and compelling account of a young man whose early life and influences shaped him in ways that would only be beneficial to his efforts to survive terrible hardhips later. After playing a vital role as a civilian defender of Wake Island, Jim spent more than four years in various POW camps. On many occasions, he was a hairs breadth away from death, but his persistent courage and ingenuity sustained him. He used his intuitive understanding of Japanese culture to outwit the enemy in ways that required them to see things his way and thus spare his life. Japanese pride dictated that they give in to prisoners' demands at times in order to "save face". Jim's keen intelligence and resourcefulness kept him alert at all times as he constantly sought ways to help himself and his fellow prisoners to stay alive.
This book is a remarkable memoir, vivid and graphic, sometimes uncomfortably so, in its portrayal of the horrific experiences of the POWs and their unflinching will to survive. It is a living testimony to the freedom of the American spirit and should inspire great respect for all those men, whether military or civilian, who did not shrink from the responsibility of defending this country in a dark time of history. Some of these heroes, like Jim, were fortunate enough to live to tell us about it.

What a true patriot is all about!
God Bless Jim and all his Wake Island buddies. There is a place already set aside in heaven for all of you.

an excellent, readable, oncology textbook
This textbook while being comprehensive enough,is enjoyable to read. As opposed to other major oncology textbooks, it provides definitive conclusions regarding treatment and is not overly burdening to the reader. Because Oncology changes so quickly, one could likely get by with this textbook and following the published literature.

It's an excellent consultation book.
The book is about the latest treatment in oncology. It's easy to obtain information out of this book. It has everything breast, lung, colorectal cancer, etc.

Best Basic Statistical Text for Social or Policy Sciences
Excellent description of the purpose and procedures of basic statistical techniques. Uses simplified formulas, and does not get lost in the math. Easy to read and understand. Good for social science and public policy courses, including public administration. Only drawback: does not effectively incorporate computer applications.

Jack Levin, Elementary statistics in Social research
One of the best statistics books I can think of for social scientists who are not well aquainted with statistical procedures. The book is structured in several chapters, each concentrating on one statistical problem. In the first part of each chapter the theoretical background is given, followed by examples. Then, other examples are given, so that it becomes easily understandable how to correctly use the formulas respectively when they can't be used. Finally, there is a part of exercises where the reader may apply his new knowledge, before proceeding to the next chapter. However, it is just an introduction, not dealing with more complex statistical problems. Very recommendable for anyone who needs a solid basic knowledge in statistic or who wants how to start processing existing data.

Highly recommended !
The Idea Brokers is an excellent chronological exploration of the evolution and impact of think tanks on U.S. public policy. The reader is presented with a comprehensive history of these obscure institutions that have spawned dramatically since the start of the 20th-century. The author adequately provides a thorough and detailed account of the personalities that were responsible for establishing these research institutions, their intended purpose, their area of expertise, their advising successes and their implementation failures. At the end, you will agree that these research insitutions will only play a much larger role in shaping government policy and public opinion in the coming years.

An excellently researched book !
The Idea Brokers is a thorough and lucid chronological examination of the evolution and impact of the modern day research centers known as 'think tanks'. These obscure research centers have spawned dramatically over the past century and their significant contributions in shaping the policies of the United States are revealed.

The best!
The best book for the money, and I have read them all! Clearly explains MP3 and other aspects of digital music. Great CD, too.

Easy to understand, all-inclusive guide
I have read several books on MP3, and this is definitely the best for beginners. It explains all aspects of finding, playing, and creating MP3 files. While it is easy, it contains enough technical information for advanced users, as well.

The included CD is worth the price of the book, and is the best suite of MP3 programs and utilities I have seen!

Excellent little novel
For children, this is a superb read. Rest assured, though, it gets better with age. As my all-time favorite book, I even bought a special-edition hardcover to pass on to my own little girl. 'The Secret Garden' is a delightful story that can be interpreted on a variety of levels, from a beautiful little story to an intensely moving classic, and each time it is read a new Truth can be derived. I highly recommend 'The Secret Garden' to both children and adults, preferably read from childhood into adulthood.
As an aside, unfortunately the movie version of 'The Secret Garden' is no match for the book. It presents a trite and overacted children's piece that isn't suitable for idiots. I wouldn't subject my child to it.

A literature that the none-literature readers will love.
It's amazing for me to read a book in tree days and want to read it again.I'm a Chinese, but I just can't resist the story line printed on the cover, and I bought a English version.I thought I can read it slowly and prectice my English, but I finished in only three days. Three person who can't love and got together in a great house.Mary,Collin, and Mr.Craven was teached what love is and how to love others by theyselves and by a magical natual-love boy,Dickon. And finally the great house bathed in terror came bake to the arm of the love. I can't write too much about this book. The ending will make you laugh with happiness and make you cry moved by the ending. You really should not only read it,but also own one.

What a great book!
This book is recommended for ages 9-12, but my 6-year-old ate it up and my 4-year-old enjoyed it too. I bought it because my girls are going through a knights and castles thing, and this was recommended as a good place to learn about them. I thought we'd just read that section and put it on the shelf until the other subjects came up. Well my 6-year-old saw things differently. She loves this book. She loves the way it is laid out and what she is learning from it. She had no interest in Vikings or Romans or Egyptians before this, but now she wants more on all these topics. And it is a fun book for me to read too. It is reminding me of things I hadn't learned since I was a child, and the diagrams are so clear that maybe I am learning things better than I did when I was a child.

Four books in one, excellent information!
WOW, this is a compilation of four different civilizations, it includes ALOT of information on understanding how these ancient groups lived. I have learned alot of interesting facts every time I haved looked through the pages. The illustration in it is amazing, there is not a corner left empty in this huge book!

Allen never fails
If you cherish "As a Man Thinketh," then "Above Life's Turmoil" will not fail you. In this book, Allen disects the human condition and like a master physician, he offers solutions in his haunting and truthful style. This book is beautiful. As with Allen's other works, I re-visit the pages of this book often. Read it yourself and see why.

Great Catalog
I thought this book was great! The pictures of the objects are beautiful. Where a picture could not be obtained there is usually a detailed sketch of the object. The descriptions give not only insight into use of the archaological object but also surrounding information like similar objects and archeological context. Then the essays descibe the time period and unknown/debated issue of Egyptian Archeology. As a newbie to Egyptian Archaeology I found the book easy to read and felt that things were explained well.

A classic
Allen's book is a standard introduction to NLP in industry and academia. His exposition permits straightforward implementation and provides a lucid motivation for the algorithms he describes. "Natural Language Understanding" was the first NLP text I read (for a summer job), and I've always referred to it first for its balance of formal and practical considerations.

However, some developments in the past few years outpace his treatment. In particular, the stochastic viewpoint has become more common in natural-language processing, and Allen does not consider related innovations in great depth. Passing mention of the interaction between NLP and the speech processing and information retrievals would also benefit a revised version.

Now THERE'S a good book!
James Allen introduces the concepts required to build a NL system without losing you in the psycholinguistics, psychology and philosophy of language. The great part is that he gives you enough of a background in each of these fields before going into a topic in depth. Plenty of examples help define words like "morpheme" so you don't get lost in the psychobabble jargon of the required disciplines. (Wouldn't that be an ironic thing to have happen in a NLP book?!) :)

I'd love to tell you more, but I only stopped by to catch the author's name and look for whitepapers on his (hopefully existant) website.

A great text, and useful reference
This books serves as a very useful introduction to computational linguistics. It is clearly laid out, and will serve the reader for many years as a continuing reference.

The TRAINS project at Rochester (the author's institution) was based on many of the concepts outlined in this book... proof that they work and can be made to handle real-world situations.

I continue to use it, now in its second edition as a reference for myself, and to train those who need to work with our project.

I cannot recommend a book more highly. If you want to learn computational linguistics, or need to push the state of the art, this is the book you need.
