Insightful, well written, and based on solid research
In 1935, W.E.B. DuBois - sociologist, author, civil rights leader, and one of the most influential African-American leaders of the first half of the 20th century - challenged historians to reevaluate their methods and to write an equitable history that serves the entire population. Historical Interpretations, by Dr. Tonia Alexander, examines whether DuBois's challenge has been met.

Historical Interpretations reviews the quality and quantity of African American Representations in Texas fourth-grade social studies textbooks from 1953 through 2003. Dr. Alexander reveals how contemporary interpretations of African-American history have filtered into textbooks over time, while also indicating what remains to be done if public schools wish to embrace a multicultural paradigm.

As evidence that "an equitable history that serves the entire population" is still absent from many textbooks, Dr. Alexander offers concrete examples of important events and influential people in Texas history that have been excluded from textbooks.

The book also includes an informative review of the Texas textbook adoption process and its influence on textbooks adopted throughout the Unites States, as well as highlighting some of the controversies in textbook adoption. Historical Interpretations is a must-read for everyone interested in textbook adoption.

I'm an author, and would like to know the address for Dover Pub. and Black Dog & Leventhal. They are not listed in the Writer's Marketl Please send these addresses to PHrbacek@aol.com

This is quite an excellent book and is surprisingly done in soft cover now. My copy is hard cover and is a prized possession. It's thoughtfully and knowledgably written, has excellent references, recommendations, photos and discussions.

I love this book, and it would be a GREAT present for ANY jazz guitarist. If you love one, buy it for them and they'll never forget it!

Tales of an adventuring scientist
Charles Piazzi Smyth's own writings are a passionate evocation of the life of a great Victorian gentleman scientist and explorer, and sadly very rare. Here is a chance to taste the life of one of Science's great all-rounders in a volume no less-well written than his own. Amidst the adventures you will find all the carefully researched detail you could wish for of Piazzi's pioneering experiments in remote mountaintop astronomy and Pyramid exploration. The definitive biography

Very inspiring
Charles Alexander's book, Self Recovery is particulary helpful because it includes many different experiences with recovering from drug abuse. In some, the recovery is simple and immediate with beginning the regular practice of TM. He also gives examples of more difficult cases where recovery is interrupted and regained several times before self recovery is achieved. The study imvolving alcoholics living on the street was especially important as it showed that by adding a stress management strategy to a traditional treatment program, some actual progress was made where progress is not usually seen.

That there is a stress management technique effective enough to break the grip of drug addiction is exciting. That it is sometimes challenging to keep people on the program is realistic. That it is sometimes incredibly easy and immediate is corroberated in the prioneering work on TM that Dr. Herbert Benson and Dr. Keith Wallace did at Harvard in the early 70's. It is described in Benson's book, The Relaxation Response.

Dr. Alexander's book is timely. The only real way to win the war on drugs is to reduce the demand for drugs. TM is a useful tool in establing self sufficiency, clear thinking and success in life.

A Fine Book About a Fine Unit
There were four Regular Army regiments recruited after the Civil War from the veterans of the US Colored Troops raised for war service. Two were infantry, the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth, and two Cavalry, the Ninth and Tenth. The Tenth Cavalry was mostly stationed in the west to keep order among the Native Americans who called them Buffalo Soldiers. There has been a continuing great interest in the deeds and motivations of these men in the face of rampant prejudice and social seperation. The Tenth's service has been perpetuated in the present order of battle of the US Army and there still is an active 10th Cavalry though it is now integrated.
This 1899 book was long out of print and the original is now a collectible. This facsimile reprint edition, with a new introduction added, should interest all those who study the War with Spain. In addition to a few introductory chapters on Negro's service from the Revolution to the Civil War, and a chapter each on the other three Black regiments, the book gives most coverage to the Tenth in Cuba. The 9th and 10th flanked the famous 1st Volunteer Cavalry, the "Rough Riders" at San Juan.
The original also has a commendatory introduction by the Cavalry Division commanding officer "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, who had been a Confederate officer in the Civil War. Most of the book is a collection of personal narratives interspersed with interviews with other commanders.
As an aside, Lt. John J. Pershing, later commander of the Punitive Expedition in 1916 and then the AEF in France, got his nickname "Black Jack" from his service with the Tenth.

I am amazed at the wisdom and vision of our founding fathers
If you are going to read "The Federalist Papers," you must also read "The Anti-Federalist Papers" in order to get the complete picture. Both books cross-reference each other and both are instrumental in understanding how our government was designed and how it was intended to work. In addition to the Papers, this edition also contains the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and an excellent introduction by Charles Kesler.

In a time when each colony had its own "constitution," the Federalists believed in creating one strong centralized government (with one Constitution) that could effectively represent the people. The authors and supporters of the Constitution knew that they could not afford to lose the vote in the state ratifying conventions. In an effort to win over his home state (New York), Alexander Hamilton, with the assistance of James Madison and John Jay, began a collection of 85 essays and published them under the pseudonym of "Publius" (named after one of the founders and heroes of the Roman republic, Publius Valerius Publicola). The Papers, published in 1787 and 1788, analyze and defend the proposed Constitution of the United States.

The Federalists succeeded in winning the colonists' support. But, even though the anti-federalists lost, their ideas were also brilliant and made an important contribution to the history of our government, which is why you should also read "The Anti-Federalist Papers."

This book is a must-read for all Americans. After reading this book, you will have a renewed appreciation and admiration for the wisdom and vision of our founding fathers.

Excellent Edition
I found this book to be one of the best books I ever read. Instead of giving a lay understanding of some of the arguments, I would like to note what I found exceptional about this book: the footnotes. The footnotes of this book gave detailed accounts of historical references made that shed much light on where the arguments were coming from. There is so much to be had from this book that I know I will read it at least five more times. Should be required reading by all Americans.
