A macroscopic look at the Quran
Undoubtedly, this work is original. It is a sustained macroscopic look at the Quran. It contrasts the traditional microscopic view. In earlier works, one finds similar attempts to examine the beauty of the choice of the words, the structure of the senteces (aya=verse), the linear connection of the ayas, the main theme of a chapter (sura) and the relation between the suras. This study goes farther. In it, a critical attention is paid to how the sura's main theme (amud) can be extracted. The homogeneous concepts of sura pairing and grouping are examined. This is new and original. Describing the progressiveness and vulnerability of the human ideas, the earlier muslim scholars indicated that; from every attempt, parts will be accepted and others will be given back. In this regard, the "Coherence in the Quran" is not an exception. It is refreshing to see such a new macroscopic approach. It ought to be complementing, not replacing, the traditional microscopic one. This will not be the final interpretation of the Quran. The Quran will continue to reveal and inspire new concepts. It is revealed for all mankind (of varying education and intellect) and for all times and localities. It is a book that was delivered orally. It addresses many aspects and factors simultaneously. The similitude of this aspect of the Quran (being an oral book and a diversified address) is of an auther of a book presenting it in the form of lectures to groups of different professional background. From the angle of approach, his presentation of the same book will differ as the groups differ. The same Quranic text inspires many angles of approach.

A dissolving dream : a New Zealander in Amin's Uganda
Published in Unknown Binding by Bridget Williams Books ()
Author: Heather Benson

Used price: $12.00

A foreigner's view into the heart of a country.
This book is well worth reading. It tells the story of Heather, a young New Zealander swept off her feet and married to a Ugandan. Once she arrives in her new country, she finds herself involved in the political nightmare that was Amin's Uganda. Gradually she must come to terms with her fading love and trust in her husband, and devise a plan to get not only herself, but her three small children (Ugandan by nationality) safely back to New Zealand - with or without her controlling husband's awareness. The small detail of her life there and her flirtation with an Isreali soldier only serve to enhance the depth of this book - its true subject is a study of the Pearl of Africa - Uganda, and it's struggles under Amin. This book is great, and is truly compelling reading.

Objective review and 24 hour companion
This book alone will not PASS you on the USMLE. It is for reviewing only, has objective reviews for all subjects on STEP I and STEP II, add your notes to it and carry it to the beach, park, bed, have it handy at all times! To me it's the medical students bible for the boards. I found at least 25% of questions on the boards were in this book. Now that is a fact.

wonderful presentation of this monument
This book covers the little-known work, the Gateway, built by Ramesses IX and located at the Temple of Amun at Karnak. The first chapter gives a background setting of the Temple, and briefly explains Ramesses IX's works. The second chapter presents the translations of the hieroglyphic texts found on the Gateway. In the third chapter, the author attempts to provide the role and significance of the Gateway scenes. The last chapter consists of the hieroglyphic texts which were translated in chapter two. Eighteen photographic and line plates complete the book, which is indispensable for those interested in learning about this part of an important Ancient Egyptian monument.

Insight Guide Kenya
The book has everything you need to know. This book had every hotel, lodge or tented camp we stayed at and the information was accurate. It also list places to eat, shop, and sites to see in each area. The book gives you a history of the country, profiles on the different tribes, details about each park and reserve, maps and travel tips that were very good. Really liked the information on the wildlife since this was the main reason for our trip. My 10 old daughter also enjoyed reading this book.

Simin Daneshvar's second collection of short stories which was published in iran under the title of "Be Ki Salaam Konam." A great book, wonderful to read. Along with Jalal Al Ahmad's "Se Tar", Sadegh Hedayat's "Sag-e Velgard", and of course Jamal Zadeh's "Yeki Bood, Yeki Nabood", one of the finest collection of Persian short stories by the best fiction writer of the modern Persian literature, Ostad Simin Daneshvar.

Excellent review book
The Microbiology books are arguably the best books of the Underground Clinical Vignette series. Microbiology is very high yield on Step 1 and many questions are asked from a clinical standpoint. I highly recommend these books as a part of a final review before Step 1. It is a good way to learn the clinical presentations of the rare and exotic diseases that may otherwise be missed during review.

Absolute necessity, but you'll need more than this.
The books of the First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 series help from the very day you decide to take the USMLE (or medicine, for that matter). It contains need-to-know information about the exam such as what the exam is like, when to register, what your score means, and what to do if you pass or fail. Furthermore, and most importantly, it contains the absolutely "must know" high-yield facts in every subject in Step 1's coverage and fun mnemonics to go along with them. This book also has a review of review books which helps you decide which books are best for you. It also includes a form you can submit mnemonics and suggestions with to improve next year's edition. However, obviously this book is not enough to pass step 1 of the USMLE, but it may give you a very good advantage.

Useful and in fashion
As a student i have always believed in working hard and tried to master the concepts and material covered in the medical school curiculum. It did bring very good grades but I am afraid thats not enough for USMLE. As this book tells USMLE has focus that can be different from what is covered in medschool. A good school will have covered the material but this book will help you look at it the way you can score more on USMLE( esp. the clinical slant of the exam) .The advice are judicious and invaluable for an IMG. I read the advice early on and it helped me mentally prepare for the exam. It maybe hard to go through the review books adviced when doing your course work but borrowing them and orienting yourself to them maybe useful. The book reviews are good. This book doesnt do any magic for you. The best prepration is still studying hard during the course.Goodluck on the exam.
Updated 27th Oct2001 : Just wished to add 1 month after writting the above review that I got a 3 digit score of 269 and a 2 digit score of 99.

This book is MONEY for Step 1
I worked hard through out my first two years of Medical school. We even started studying early for the boards. However when crunch time came and there was a limited amount of time for review I used First Aid. I got the score I wanted and felt like I was prepared for 99% of the questions I had on the boards. If you can use this book during your course work-DO IT! What I did was made flash cards from this book and quized myself. I also used this along with the Clinical Vignettes which were awesome as well.
