it moved me
Soldiers are often the best of us. We honor them, we respect them and we look up to them. There is nothing more moving than seeing a brave soldier standing at the border of his/her nation with only one thought in his/her mind and heart... that as long as I am here, no will every harm my family, my people, my nation where I can practice my own beliefs. This book shows some of them at their jobs. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to see the human spirit and vigilance at it's best. Soldiers are the best of us, no matter what nation they belong to.

A Breathtaking Analysis
This is indeed a great effort by the authors. It revealed some of the exotic features of Pakistani Armed Forces. It unveiled some of those facts of Asian war strategies that were not yet discovered by the rest of the world. But this book needs to be updated half yearly due to the continuous change in the battle equipments and war planning in the Sub-Continent.

Environment and Development in a Resource-Rich Economy: Malaysia Under the New Economic Policy (Harvard Studies in International Development)

Authors: Jeffrey R. Vincent, Rozali Mohamed Ali, and Yii Tan Chang
Amazon base price: $49.50

Useful Reference for Research on Malaysia
This path-breaking book applies rigorous and invaluable economic analysis to major natural resource and environmental policy issues in Malaysia under the New Economic Policy decades of the 1970s and 1980s-a period of profound socio-economic changes, rapid depletion of natural resources, and the emergence of serious air and water pollution problems.

It examines the interrelationship among natural resources, environmental quality, and economic development. This scholarly work addresses, from an economic perspective, a broad set of natural resource and environmental issues in Malaysia and places it in a historical context.

This book would be of particular interest to resource and environmental economists, and development economists, i.e. anyone seeking a thorough understanding of the economic underpinnings of natural resource and environmental management policy in fast-growing, resource-abundant Malaysia. It represents a reference volume to facilitate further research on Malaysian natural resource and environmental policy issues.

Dr Jeffrey R. Vincent is a Fellow at the Harvard Institute for International Development. Formerly director of the Centre for Environmental Studies at Malaysia's Institute of Strategic and International Studies, Dr Rozali Mohamed Ali is currently executive director of Commerce Asset Holdings Berhad.

The book does a fine job of compiling evidence and results.
The book does a fine job of compiling evidence and results. The book is clearly written and organized. The book is a welcome additon to the study of Malaysia and to study of environment and development in general. The fisheries section, the sector I know from first-hand experience, is well done and includes original material.

A Must Read Book Before Hajj
I made Hajj with my husband in March/April of last year - 1998. I read this book and it is excellent. It has all the information needed to successfully complete your Hajj. I do recommend it specially to all Non -Arabic speaking and American born pilgrims who are planning to perform Hajj. I actually ordered 4 copies to give as a gift to my friends who are planning to go to Hajj this year.

A must on the Hajj packing List.
I made Hajj with my family in March/April of this year(1998). My uncle gave us a copy of this book and on the plane ride to Saudi Arabia I begin reading. As I looked around at the other members of our group about five other people were reading the same book. This book was excellent. It gives the pilgrim-specifically the American born, English speaking pilgrim all the necessary information for completing a successful Hajj. The book is written in a user friendly, comprehensive style that is accessible to all readers. The sources and references are universally acceptable and I urge all those who are interested in making Hajj or learning about Hajj to get this book.

Iranian Intellectuals and the West: The Tormented Triumph of Nativism (Mohamed El-Hindi Series on Arab Culture and Islamic Civilization)
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse University Press (November, 1996)
Author: Mehrzad Boroujerdi
Amazon base price: $45.00
Used price: $41.85
Average review score:

The East's reaction to West
This book (based on the author's doctorate thesis) is a good sociological review of various reactions to the West and Westernication by Iranian intellectuals. The personalities discussed in the book fairly represent the various intellectual factions. The author has done his homework by reading the original sources, analyzing and synthesizing them in an easy-to-read book. This book will be of great interest to the Western intellectuals and scholars as well as to the Iranians interested in tracing the roots of their worldviews. For the latter, it should be noted, that the book has also been translated into Persian (Roshanfekran-e Irani va Gharb, by Jamshid Shirazi, Farzan Pub., Tehran, 1378).

Very interesting style and content
What started as a dissertation paper is now an excellent historical account of post-revolutionary Iran framed in the context of the key intellectuals of the time. Boroujerdi's work is exemplary in that it covers both the secular as well as religious (and those in-between) intellectuals of the time. He offers commentary and criticisms and doesn't fail to point out hypocrisy where encountered. A smooth and fast read, however, a pen and paper are useful as one encounters a multitude of interesting references that scream: "read me!"

Mosque Libraries, an Historical Study (Libraries and Librarianship in the Muslim World)
Published in Hardcover by Mansell (November, 1987)
Author: Mohamed Makki Sibai
Amazon base price: $70.00
Average review score:

Islamic librarianship
An excellent source for study and research in the area of Islamic librarianship, and fills a gap among non-Arabic sources. Sibai's book is not just a history of libraries attached to Mosques, it presents the historical overview of how the first library (housed in mosque) evolved into reading room, study centre, open and free public library, all under a single roof. Such libraries attached to Mosques have existed all thro' the 1400 years of Islamic civilization. Sibai's work also dwells into some minor details, such as, naming of the Mosque library, intellectual contents, shelf arrangement and organizational details. This book is also translated into Persian (T¯ar¯ikh-i kit¯abkh¯anahþh¯a-yi mas¯ajid/Muhammad Makk¯i Sib¯a`¯i ; tarjamah-'i Muhammad `Abb¯asp¯ur, Muhammad Jav¯ad Mahdav¯i.Published: Mashhad : Mu'assasah-i Ch¯ap va Intish¯ar¯at-i¯Ast¯an-i Quds-i Razav¯i, 1373 [1994] LC Call No.: IN PROCESS).

Very original!
As unlike the stereotypes of the "Middle East" as you'd hope to find. These poets are really fresh and new; some of them have avant-garde weird images and sexual references, and some are more traditional; some are funny, some are sad; some of them are talking about their experiences in their own country and some are talking more generally. The translation hardly shows at all; you could be reading Laurie Jackson, or at times the early Beats. If you like poetry, or are interested in other cultures - or perhaps are interested in finding out that we're not so different after all - buy it.
(Bonus: If you're a student of translation, Arabic poetry, or just of Arab issues, there's a very informative introduction about the ancient Arabic poetry tradition and how it's been an influence on modern writers. For me, it was worth the price of the book just for this info.)

An Atlas of Human Osteology

A great study aid!
I was skeptical about an osteologic atlas that only sold for $[money]. I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality, and immense (but uncluttered) detail found in this book. I don't know how the University of Saskatoon can produce such a nice book for such little money. The photographs are great and rival, if not surpass the quality found in other more expensive books. There are even some very unique perspectives which display their skeletal material from a new point of view.

Be aware, though, that this is truly an atlas. If you want a wordy book - find something else. Although there are short sections of text which clarify concepts, this is predominantly a well-labeled picture book.

I am using "An Atlas of Osteology" to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in skeletal anatomy, physical and forensic anthropology. I highly recommend it. Cheers to the University of Saskatoon on producing a great book!
