A rousing tale of a legendary warrior!
As Bili Morguhn lay on his deathbed, he remembers scenes throughout his life. Known as Bili the Axe, and the Prince of Karaleenos, Bili had led an astounding life as a warrior, and leader of men. But the tales are not only of Bili's heroics, but of other warriors as well. Anyone who has read and enjoyed, a Horseclans story, will surely enjoy this one. Those who have never read Horseclans, but enjoy stories, of heroics, battle, and brains are sure to have a good time, reading this story of epic adventure.

Synthesis Bible
This book is an excellent overview of the essentials of music synthesis and sound design. Don't be fooled by the title either, this is not baby stuff, though it still explains it well to the newcomer to synthesis so don't be afraid to pick this book up without a prerequisite.

Esther

Faith and reason clash in this comic masterpiece
A neglected comic masterpiece that deserves to be rediscovered, "Esther" features an inspired premise as its plot: a young, free-thinking socialite falls desperately in love with an Episcopal minister. The result is a free-for-all clash of intellects, a confrontation between faith and reason, and the inevitable battle of the sexes.

The marvels of Adams's novel are his remarkably nuanced and fully realized characters. Esther, the free-thinker, wants to share her lover's faith and "is trying to get it by reason"--but doesn't initially understand that a person "can never reason yourself into it." Mr. Hazard, the minister, is confident that he will "succeed in drawing her into the fold, because his lifelong faith, that all human energies belonged to the church, was on trial, and, if it broke down in a test so supreme as that of marriage, the blow would go far to prostrate him forever." Esther's principles of independence and self-education collide with Hazard's desire to steer her into submission as his wife and fellow believer.

But my favorite character is relegated to a supporting role: Catherine, a recent transplant from the frontiers of Colorado, befriends Esther and dazzles New York society with her innocence, naivete, and sincerity. It's never really quite clear, however, whether her simplicity is the genuine article or just a show mocking the pretensions of her admirers. As one of the intellectuals who lightheartedly teases her wonders, there was "a little doubt whether she was making fun of him or he of her, and she never left him in perfect security on this point."

The novel sparkles with banter and quarrels, jokes and ripostes, but any attempt to reproduce the humor in a short review would fall flat: Adams's witticisms are dependent upon context and character. Still, I caught myself laughing out loud often at the book's cleverness and hilarity.

Definitive Tribute to an Important American Artist
At last, John Curry has a book in print worthy of his art. Ms. Junker has suceeded in paying a noble yet sadly overdue tribute to this unique and often neglected artist. Curry's paintings capture the emotion and natural force of American scenes in a way that was very much his own. Works like "Tornado over Kansas" and the scene of John Brown in "A Tragic Prelude" embody some of the greatest expressions of conflict to be found in American art.

Contemplating Eden
In a world where industry and technology have wiped away almost all traces of the way the land used to look, it is incredibly rare to find a person who can see straight through the agricultural history of the past century. In Robert Adams book, Los Angeles Springs, he documents the landscape of Los Angeles as we often know it. But with closer investigation it becomes clear that he is showing us something different, something older. Adam shows us the distruction of land, but more importantly he shows us a hint of what the land might have looked like before it was touched by man. In doing this he not only shows us the past, but also a hope for the future.

One of the best literary magazines around
Open City consistently publishes great stories, poems, essays, and artwork. I look forward to each issue, because each one is so different, and because this magazine continues to be vital and relevant, esp. because many literary magazines are so staid and dull....

An excellent sampler
First, a disclaimer. I wrote the third essay of this book. Yet even if I hadn't, I would still consider this to be an excellent book and the finest anthology of essays on the spiritual nature of same sex relationships and families. However, it is important to be clear about what it is and what it is not. It is a sampler, and not a systematic presentation of a single integrated "theory," or even a systematic presentation of multiple "theories." A number of different, and even conflicting, takes on our relationships are presented by the various authors. This is also not a scholarly treatise, but it is written to intellectually engage the general reader. It is not fluff. It is collection of thoughtful essays -- some are written from the first person, and all are expressions of the real experiences of a very diverse collection of writers. Some of the pieces may strike a postive chord, and others may offend, depending on the individual reader. Hopefully, all will make the reader think about something new.
