One of the worst books on the topic (typical Radelet product
I agree with the first reviewer. A blatant case of intellectual dishonesty. Michael Radelet is one of the worst researchers on capital punishment. I don't know how the guy got his tenure. Don't buy it!!

Re: Intellectual Dishonesty
Just some definitional clarification in response to comments made about the "intellectual dishonesty" of the authors:

CAPITAL OFFENSE - a crime for which the death penalty may be imposed. Black's Law Dictionary, 7th Ed. 1999.

Black's is the legal system's most trusted authority on legal terminology, and while it is perhaps unfair and potentially misleading for the authors to have exploited a reader's possible misunderstanding of the nature of capital sentencing and prosecutorial dealmaking, the authors are correct in their usage of the term.

The truth comes out....
This is a wonderful book documenting some of the most significant failures of Justice in the 20th century. The stories presented within are both enthralling and heartbreaking. I highly recommend this book.

Another reviewer accused this book's authors of "intellectual dishonesty" for including crimes that did not result in a death sentence. However, this reviewer erroneously stated that only crimes that eventually result in the death penalty are capital crimes. This is not true. A capital crime is an crime that carries with it the _potential_ for recieving a death sentence - not just the crimes that actually do recieve such a sentence.

The authors also stated in the introduction that they would be including crimes which, at the time they were committed, constituted a capital offense, but no longer are considered death penalty-eligible (like rape).

The only "intellectual dishonesty" present is that of certain reviewers who make false statements and tarnish the reputations of well-respected researchers.

Caution graphic designers...
I ordered this book because as an emerging graphic desginer, I wanted to know how to set my documents up for print in programs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and of course Quark. Although this book is very detailed about the history of printing and how printing works, as well as job estimates for printing, it seems really outdated as far as using your computer for prepress and helping a designer work with a local printer. And the clencher is, it is basically a school textbook. That is what it looks and reads like, unfortunately. However, if you are an artist in any way and are studying art and printing processes and all the different kinds, you might find it somewhat helpful. For those of you creating a brochure in Quark and need information on color processing, stacking, and how to approach your printer to get the job done? This is not the book. Try "Pocketguide to Digital Printing".

Something the wanna-be graphic artists can understand.
This book takes the reader through the right steps to acheive satisfactory results on a press. The knowledge contained in this book will separate the reader from the growing population of half-baked desktop publishers who cause grief to printers, service bureaus, advertising agencies and the like. It can also save the self-publisher hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars caused by bad design and or process.

"Do me and the printing industry a favor, read it!"

An Interesting Look at Societal Change
A book about the demographics of Canadians? Although the title doesn't immediately suggest it, that is what Sex in the Snow is all about. Michael Adams has delineated the divisions of modern Canadian society into three generational groups and a dozen "social values tribes." What makes the book especially interesting is the way he highlights connections and tensions between the various tribes and then extrapolates what it all means to Canadian society. The central message is that "demography is no longer destiny," that the contribution/influence of any group or tribe is not intrinsically tied to their numbers, and that self-determination and self-identification plays a powerful role in constructing society. Although the thrust of the book is Canadian demographics, those south of the border will find the comparison between Canadians and their counterparts in the U.S. quite enlightening, too.

Historical inaccuracies and typos equal a grand flop
This effort is one of the most disappointment among the 100 or so baseball history titles that I have read in the past half-dozen years. The book is poorly edited and filled with literally hundreds of typographical errors. (Also the footnotes section at the end of the hardcover edition is simply eliminated from the end of the paperback, without corresponding adjustments in the text!) This factor is especially disappointing when it comes to the butchered names of dozens of Latin ballplayers. There are also numerous historical inaccuracies here. Hispaniola is not an island to the west of Cuba. Jackie Robinson was not called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers "not long after the 1947 began." Aluminum bats are not made in Cuba by the Batos company. And such errors go on and on. This book is a major disappointment when it comes to historical historical research.

Very well done
A historical synopsis of what is now the official garden of talent for the Major Leagues; Latin America.

Ignites the importance of the Spanish American War - in baseball anyway.

A FISHY TALE
.

There is lots of strongly expressed "messages" in this story. Among them are .... ... Don't think you're too clever ..... Don't be too dissatisfied with your situation.

We are told the fishy facts of life. We are but one of millions and life is very hard and full of dangers.

Using your imagination and acting on you fantasies may take you to very frightening places.

When our little fishy friend takes the trip down the flooded river into the big lake he finds himself faced with "strange monsters of awesome size". He hadn't seen a fisherman's boat before. He becomes very scared and lonely "What use are brains and imagination if you don't have a friend?" His hides away in a tin can to shut out the big bad world.

His escape back to his little pond requires a one in a zillion chance rescue.

Most children and their parents would find the story line of "The Little Fish in a Big Pond" a bit heavy handed. The real saving grace of this book is the illustrations. They are bright, naturalistic and quite appealing.

A Letter from My Father
I don't think I would have known about this book if my father's letter wasn't in it. My Dad, John D. Rice, intrepid radio journalist from Sparta, Wisconsin, died in September, 1991. Sometime in the months following his death, his widow, my mother, became aware that a letter Dad wrote to one of his colleagues on the Wisconsin State Journal in the early forties, had been included in a collection of War Letters published by the Wisconsin State Historical Society.

The quid pro quo for my mother's approving the letter for use in the book, was that she got a copy. I think the letter was written to a Wisconsin State Journal editor named Don Anderson. The subject of the letter was Japanese radio directed at American Servicemen in Alaska where my father was stationed until 1943. John D. said it was pretty dull and corny, because the Nips didn't really understand American culture well enough to produce worthy entertainment.

I read some of the other letters and forgot about the book until about a week ago. My brother told me my Uncle Zel had heard there was such a book and inquired about it. My brother was unaware of the book, but I knew Mom had a copy. Well, the upshot is I arranged to get our copy to my uncle. I wondered whether the hype about The Greatest Generation had given the book a boost. So I checked Amazon dot com. Well, the answer is mixed. Its about 800,000th in the great pantheon of Amazon Books. I don't think thats so hot, but its all relative. It depends on what the LEAST well-rated book on Amazon is.

If you're interested in knowing some of John D.'s history because you remember him from somewhere, write me at mrice@elroynet.com and I'll bring you up to date.

Thanks.
