Abbasolutely fabbalous!
A must-read for all ABBA fans! The update done just after Benny & Frida's wedding adds a lot more to the whole story. ie: Frida meeting her father for the first time, Benny & Frida getting married after all those years, etc. It's a great book to give you an insight on the group. Unfortunately, most of the points are well-known to fanatics such as myself, but it makes for a great read. Harry Edgington managed to capture the essence of my group and make me feel like I've known them forever. If you can get it, do! You won't regret it!

Absolutely splendid
Anyone who cares about Arabian horses, especially the Egyptian type, just has to read this book. It tells a lot about how the breed came to be and is illustrated beautifully. It is not leasurely reading because it does take you back in time and into a complete different world than ours is today. Add too that that it is a complete different culture altogether and you'll enjoy every bit of the book. I truely recommend this book to all of you Arabian horse lovers. Maybe it is helpfull to learn a bit about Islam culture before reading this book so you can understand the culture even better.

Al-Kitaab: A Textbook for Beginning Arabic, Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds
Published in Audio Cassette by Georgetown University Press (December, 1995)
Authors: Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal, and Abbas Al-Tonsi
Amazon base price: $150.00
Average review score:

Excellent Series for learning Arabic
As I was instructed by Kristen Brustad and Mahmoud Al-Batal (two of the authors), I may be slightly biased; However, this series of books and methodology are an excellent, comprehensive way to learn Arabic reading and writing, along with differences in dialects and cultures as well as a solid basis for learning the spoken language. The accompanying audio-tapes will add to the learning process for those who aren't immersed in an Arabic speaking environment. Of course, conversation practice and immersion are still the best way to truly learn the spoken language. I would highly recommend this book, as well as it's predecessor, Alif-Baa (an introduction to Arabic where you learn the alphabet and some basic vocabulary and grammar) to anyone wanting a good place to start learning Arabic. The books make learning Arabic fun and relatively easy, considering most "Westerners" initially find the language quite intimidating.

Book of Beginnings

Where it ends dawn begins...
This felt like my first scoop of ice cream!

Abdel Halim Abbas writes about his days... the way he used to absorb the details of his childhood... the turmoils that splashed his young shores when he left his country to study abroad... the feelings he lived & the nostalgia he experienced on his way from one city to one memory... he pays no attention to time... nor to circumstances... he unraps his soul... unleaches his exudating affections... slips & trips... falls & stands... he embraces hope & despair... something at the core is wanting...

...he finds me in the middle...

wanting...

A descendant of a family of poets... this writer commits no verse... he has his own style of shaping things... no rules chain his pen... no critical views cripple his imagination... he drives his fears from the inside... he romances but does not surrender to love... embelishes but shies from the beautiful centre... sends hints & tricky vibrations but does not commit to the beloved... just for now...

This book surprised & thrilled me... very tiny it could fit in your pocket... so big it spills on your spirit... & what a stain it could leave...

I grew with the auther & shared the same playground... I remember the tired grey walls hugging us all in that old part of Amman where Terra Sancta College still holds like an ageless fortress... his older brother... Dr. Fawaz Abbas, an able poet, used to exchange pieces of literature with me... the little brother glowed secretively... we lived a lavish childhood... colourful... joyous... & well deserved... we cherished the beginnings...

He reminds me of everything...

This is a book for the soul... a glimpse into one's circle of energy... words of being there...

I've been there... & after so many years... I feel I'm there again...

& that's just the beginning!

The Concise Persian English Dictionary

Review of Aryanpur-Kashani's Concise Dictionary
Great dictionary. Much better than old Haim. My copy even has little tabs for each letter of the alphabet to speed indexing. Entries have the English translation, Farsi synonyms, and even more important for the English student, many examples of Farsi usage. You can learn a lot from each example. You will find few words in the modern Persian press that aren't here.

Are you looking for more a meaningful relationship w/ God?
Wow! This book is an honest look at how God views us and the relationship He wants to develop with us! At times it is painful to read but it always brings you back to the fact that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life. This is a book that can be read over and over again and it is fresh and new every time you read it! The format of the book is very practical. It is divided into sections and each section has a theme and several pages disscussing that theme which is then followed by opportunites for you to interact with God through prayer and medition! If you like your life the way it is don't read this book, but if you are ready for a change in the way live you Christian life hang on for one exciting ride! I also recommend 31 Days of Praise by Ruth Myers

Inventive look at global/local dynamics in imperial HongKong
An inventive look at localist twists and practices in cinema, literature, urban space, within contexts of transnational porousness and neo-nationalism. A poetics of distraction and late capitalist bemusement, useful and the mall and in the movies and poesy too.
