This text is along the same lines at the New Testament word study written by the same author. It is very usable for the novice readers who are learning about the Old Testament, Hebrew and Aramaic language. I found this to be a valuable resource when I was first learning to get into the scriptures of the Old Testament.
Any bible student, or anybody who wants to go deeper into Old Testament scripture could benefit from this word study text. It really makes learning about the scriptures easy. A more advanced student of the Old Testament may not get as much use from this as a beginner. This text gives the reader enough practical information without getting into the pointless information that is useless outside of a Doctoral thesis paper.

This book goes great with McReynold's Greek-English Word Study interlinear NT. A great combination because McReynold's interlinear has the Strong's # above each greek word in the interlinear, so you can use that number with this Dictionary to get a very throroughl Word Study. (McReynold's also has a Word Study which is much briefer, but in ways more useful and user frienly than this comprhensive Word Study.
All in all, this book and McReynold's make a great team when used together!!!
I would not recommend going with Zodh's other book (Zodh's NT)-- It has no greek interlinear and uses the KJV.

The need for understanding Greek is really not understood by most people. When going through this book I really found out how much different the Greek language is from English. This resource is very easy to use, and really not over the heads of those who aren't fluent in Greek. I found this to be a very enlightening tool in growing in knowledge of the New Testament. This was one of the first tools I learned to use when being taught biblical interpretation and I've always found this dictionary to be solid.
I'm not an expert in the topic of New Testament Greek, but I do know that works and what is useful. This is a user friendly dictionary.
Zodhiates takes the Strong's Greek lexicon and amplifies it a hundredfold in terms of detail. An entry that might receive just a few lines of fine print in Strong's is instead expanded to whole columns or pages of discussion, with every conceivable nuance explored. Grammatical variations, derivations, synonyms and antonyms, and both lexical and scriptural cross-references are added to make this a truly invaluable study aid.
In a nutshell, if you are at all serious about bible study, or think you will be or want to be, this resource will be of great assistance in your efforts. Keep in mind that this is only the new testament lexicon. The author also has a separate word study dictionary for the old testament. If you find this helpful, also check out the author's interlinear new testament or Jay Green's interlineal bible.

There are a few problems with the text and those are mainly involving the way in which he describes some of the more difficult concepts. Without a knowledgeable person explaining Participles to the student, the novice would be hard-pressed to understand the complexity of the Participle in Greek and would flounder through Machen's descriptions of them. If the solitary student is trying to brush up on his Greek or has already learned one or more languages then he or she will have a much easier time grasping the more difficult concepts because they would be used to going through a grammar and learning ideas about a foreign language.
The Lexicon in the Back (with the principle parts) is also a very helpful tool for the beginning student so the student does not have to flip through every single lesson trying to find the definition of a word given previously while working on a later lesson.
Once the student has completely finished using Machen's book he or she will be able to, armed with only this grammar and a Lexicon, tackle a significant majority of the passages in the New Testament. While there are obviously some more difficult passages in the New Testament (Hebrews, etc) that will be a struggle for the beginning student this work will provide him or her with a very solid foundation to work from and will be an invaluable tool for the rest of the student's time spent in Greek.

If your a bigger fan of the UBS/NA based translations(NIV,NASB,NRSV,NAB,AMP + many others) I would STRONGLY recommend getting McReynold's Word Study Interlinear over this one.
McReynold's, like this this book, also has the Strong's # listed above every word, but in McReynold's you also have the running greek text as an interlinear. -- which I think would be very important for someone interested studying greek.....
Zodhiates other book "The Complete Word Study DICTIONARY to the NT" is not a bad asset to have on your shelf!
I would call his dictionary a poor man's BAGD (Bauer, Arndnt, Gingrich, Danker's -- top of the line Greek-English Lexicon).
If you can't afford BAGD (who can??), Zodhiates Dictionary would be a good substitute.....but I would get McReynold's interlinear/word study instead of this book.
I have both Zodhiates NT, and Zodhiates DICTIONARY and I use the Dictionary all the time (in conjunction w/McReynolds). -- I never use Zodh.'s NT. -- In fact, I should sell this thing, I need more room on my shelf!!!
Zodh's Dictionary, and McReynold's Word Study/interlinear pair up for a great combination. You can take the Strong's # from McReynold's and use Zodh's Dictionary for more detailed study than is found in the back of McReynold's book.
You will be much better off buying McReynold's interlinear/w.s. & spending your money on Zodh's DICTIONARY (not this book)
If you are a KJ ONLY person, we have to talk!!!

It doesn't get so scholarly that it is only relevant to the few who are on that level. Most Christians don't need anything more advanced than this, though the New testament Dictionary makes a nice addition. This is as in depth as most Christians require. You don't need to be fluent in Greek to be able to use this resource to its fullest.
There are great sections that make this resource a greta addition to your library; introductions to each book, exegetical notes, grammatical explanations, a concordance that works with Strong's numbers. The part that I find the most useful is that this book is very easy to use.
If you teach from the bible, this would make a great addition to your resource library. It doesn't get so detailed that it applies to a selected audience. This book contains what people will find relevant. Any more detailed than what's in this book and most people don't really care about it because it isn't relevant.

Lexicons do this to some extent as well, but not as much as theological dictionaries do. This work can be useful if you're not experienced with the original languages. But if you want the best tools, learn the Greek alphabet and get yourself a lexicon. If you want something handy in one easy-to-use volume. This will work. But don't trust it exclusively, and don't neglect your own studies for his interpretations.

As for the NASB version, it is the 1st edition of the NASB. i bought this Bible knowing that to be the case. NASB 1st edition isn't bad and in some cases (e.g., 1Cor. 1:18), it is closer to the original Greek than the NASB 2nd edition.
Lastly, the editor does have his opinions and views on certain verses and words but, seriously, find me a commentator or scholar who does not. Zodhiates does try to be objective and offers helpful insights on many words that you would otherwise have to go home to look up. For a quick, easy to use, etymology-focused study Bible, this version cannot be beat.
