A book full of wisdom & common sense about the Technique.
This is my very favourite Alexander Technique book--I refer back to it over and over again! Thinking Aloud captures Walter Carrington's intelligent charm. Walter's many years of teaching the Technique & personal relationship with the late F.M. Alexander have given him a wealth of information and experience which he shares in own wonderfully unique style.

A rare book that stimulates new thinking
This is a thought-provoking book full of insights, every page a gem. This is not an introduction to the Alexander Technique, but for those with some experience and for the rare individual with no Alexander Technique background.

A gem worth repeated reading and reflection
This little gem of a book contains selected pieces by a man who has been thinking about the work he is discussing (The F.M. Alexander Technique) for over sixty years. He has also been consistently practicing and testing this thinking in his teaching and living over the same period. Two qualities of behavior most exemplified in these selected talks are persistence and kindness. The importance of both qualities in the work of human beings attempting to change for the better is investigated and discussed. Mr. Carrington's ability to "think aloud" coherently, spontaneously, and humorously is simultaneously enjoyable and educational.

poems for childhood remembered
Forget the smoke-filled coffee shop, the microphone on the podium and the beatnicks huddled around their coffees. The real test of a reader's poetic prowess is A.A. Milne, the living room couch and a handful of kids waiting for your renderings of growling bears and timelessl human characters.

It takes an extraordinary book to capture children's attention on the strength of words alone.

It's not that there are no illustrations here, just that each poem has just one or two small, original ink drawings; delightful, but bowing appropriately to the genius of words that can hold children spellbound. For instance, Milne takes a subject like sidewalks and transforms it into the stuff of playacting in Lines and Squares - an irresistible cadence to chant on a walk (or a lumbering gait):

And the masses of bears
Who wait at the corners all ready to eat the sillies who tread on the lines of the street
And I say to them, "BEARS.....
Just look how I'm walking in ALL of the squares!"

As I read I can now recall the precise inflection and finger-shaking combination from Disobedience that it took to elicit giggles from my sisters and me, now working its comedy on my four-year-old son:

James James SAID to his mother, "Mother", he said, said he;
"You Must Never Go Down To The End Of Town If You Don't Go Down With ME!"

When We Were Very Young is a collection of poems for children, about childhood, and for those who wish to remember its special magic view on the world. This book is a beloved tradition in my family, starting with those cozy evenings on my Grandmother's couch as we all snuggled up to hear about the brownie that lives behind the curtain, Jonathan Jo (who had a mouth like an O), the three foxes and Christopher Robin, who couldn't stop his hoppity hop. Your family is sure to find its own traditions in reading these poems to each other, young and old alike.

It reminds me of Dad
My father died 10 years ago when I was nineteen. I know he used to read "when we were very young" to me when I was a child, but it wasn't until I began to read the poems as bedtime stories to my 2 year old, that I began to remember my dad's emphasis and inflections. As I read my favourites to my son, I can almost hear Dad reading them to me.

I am thrilled that my son asks for Christopher Robin as his bedtime stories and "Hoppity" and "Market Square" have become his favourites too. He is an avid reader and I am just beginning to introduce him to poetry, what better way than A A Milne - It makes me feel like a child again and connects a grandson and a grandfather who never met each other.

Like "A Child's Garden of Verses"
Like "A Child's Garden of Verses," the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, A.A. Milnes' "When We Were Very Young," collects and reminds us of childhood bliss. However, unlike Stevenson, Milne has the whimsy of Edward Lear's limericks and verse. Milne captures the joy and gentleness of youth.

For example, Milne has a poem with a refrain, "Jonathon Jo/has a mouth like an 'O'" It is fun to say, and it almost means something. Another poem talks about halfway up and down the stairs, getting a child to see the difference and sameness of the situation, great for critical thinking.

If you want pure silly humor, go buy Silverstein, but for great writing and solid bedtime reading to teach your child wit and poetry, buy this tiny book. There's a good chance you will like it as well.

Logical Deductions
Be caredul with this book. It can burn your hands! After you buy this book, you will see a picture of Lama Zopa Rinpoche
with Lama Yeshe. This is fine. Photographs can be fun to look at. But when you go to the next page, you will see another picture of Lama Zopa Rinpoche with Lama Yeshe. But now Lama Yeshe is a boy. How? This is his new incarnation. Now we must keep an open mind. We don't know about this. Maybe Tibetans just find a preganant woman and say, "That is the new incarnation." Actually, their system of recognizing incarnations is pretty scientific. But let us be skeptical.
But what if it is true? Now read more into the book. This book holds no punches. We are lucky if we are reborn a human! This
book may let us down, punch us on the jaw, and then hold us up.
But it will prepare you for what Buddhists really believe. They believe in reincarnation into another form. And you will be oh so lucky if it is a human the next time. This book is brillant and concise. It will cut you into a million pieces. It will leave blisters on your hands. Because despite your love for the teachings of His Holiness the Dali Lama or Sogyal Rinpoche, I am betting that you don't really know what they believe. Buy this book and find out. And if you think that the Tibetans may be onto something, then I think you better do something about it.

turned my mind to the dharma!
This is a great book! This is one of the first books to really turn my mind to the dharma. Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche were like the dynamic duo of Dharma, spreading the truths of the Buddhist teadhings to the west. I would reccomend reading anything by either of them as their wisdom and skillful means are perfected and help us (sentient beings) to understand how to grow and reach full buddhahood for the benefit of all. If you ever have a chance to recieve teachings in person from Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche I would highly reccomend takeing the opportunity to recieve the blessings and transmissions of this enlightened master, Lama, Guru, Shaman, healer, Buddha. And if you are ever have the chance to see, venerate, circumnabulate, and prostrate to any of the Stupas which hold Lama thubten Yeshe's ahes, I would encourage that holy act as well. I have given this book to relatives and would reccomend it to anyone.

No-nonsense Insights into the Human Condition
This is a deeply refreshing book about elementary Buddhist ideas. The authors, Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, present the material in a clear logical way that immediately rings true. They are empirical and scientific in their approach, even comparing Buddhist inquiry about the nature of self to a scientific investigation. Their refrain throughout the books is "check it out" --- verify for yourself, in your own practice, that their observations are true. They are not preaching dogma: quite to the contrary, they are proposing "testable hypotheses" of inner life, and they suggest inner "experiments" for the reader to carry out. The analyses are precise, and yet the precision is conveyed without jargon. This book is profoundly accessible to the modern Western reader, particularly to someone who has a background in science. Because of the cogency of the arguments, I would recommend this book not only to students of Buddhism and comparative religion, but also to students of philosophy, psychology, anthropology --- anyone who uses rational and scientific investigation to explore human nature in an attempt to ameliorate human problems.

Communist Anarchism from Berkman
This is the book that transformed me into a communist anarchist. It led me to other, more complex readings, etc. Berkman is one of the most inspired men to ever live, he tried to kill Henry Clay Fricke (which broke the resistance to the workers' demands). He spent 14 years in prison for that. He was deported from many countries, sentenced to death in some. This book tears the curtain away from your face which covers your view of the authoritative nature of capitalism and state communism.

Communist Anarchism is freedom
Anything else is just slavery.

straight-up common sense about society and revolution
anyone interested in social revolution should read this book. the wisdom presented here is beautiful and simple. it represents my deepest hope for humanity. let us realize that while we struggle for a free society, we begin to lose our chains as soon as we stand up. it is the act of defiance, of rebellion, which transforms us from victims into human beings. there is no meaningful struggle for social change which does not involve that exquisite moment of tense confrontation with authority. if you want to change society, you must stop obeying, and if you are only fighting for someone else's freedom, you are blind to the walls around you. peace.

A great ideal is described in a very easy language!
One of my very favorite books. It is very easy to understand, and the described philosophie is great. No question is unanswered. READ THIS BOOK!!! *****

The BEST of Information I've found in one book!!!!!!
The author tells us what we need to know as parents and how to guide the educational system. THIS SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR EDUCATORS!!!!!

new hope for me
I am an ADHD female and I found this book very helpfull.I can now pay attention better and curve my impusivity. The strategies were very helpfull and I am now an A student without medicine.I am also not ashamed of having ADHD anymore.

A well-written, compehensive look at ADHD in Teens. A gem!
Ms. Alexander-Roberts' second book on the topic carries on where her first book, "The ADHD Parenting Handbook", leaves off. She has written an excellent, well-researched book that provides in-depth information on living with the teenager with ADHD. She covers the most important concerns well. These include: parenting strategies that work; the use of medication; and the positive aspects of having ADHD. She also discusses helping your teen say "no" to drugs; other co-existing disorders that may be present, but often go undiagnosed and untreated; and many other topics important to parents of ADHD teens. Highly recommended

I still have my original copy of this book. Copyright 1964! The colors are beautiful and the message one that applies to all of us! We are lucky to have parents who read these classics to us. I would love an extra copy for my classroom!

Alexander, My Favorite Green Horse With Red Stripes
This is one of my favorite childrens books. I am studying to be a teacher and want to find this book to use in my classroom. I still have my own original copy but would purchase as many as I could get my hands on for my future children. What a great lesson for young readers.

My favorite children's book of all time!
I could cry that this book is out of print, but hopefully those Amazon folk will be wiley enough to find me a used copy. Some of my earliest memories are of paging through this book before I learned to read. The jewel-like colors used in the illustrations to this day are intensely nostalgic for me, and the whole feel of the pictures and story are of calm, warm, and glowing dusk - a father talking to his son before bedtime in a cozy, shadowy room.

Stupendous
This book is truly a marvelous book to have in my library. I have been collecting chess books since 1969 and despite having almost 500 chess books not much comes close. This book most clearly resembles the excellent two volume book on Rubinstein by John Donalson and Nicolay Minev. As big as a phone book this book does not easily fit on all bookshelves. The only caveat is that there could have been more anotated games. One example is that all the games from NY 1924 should have been annotated as Alekhine himself annotated all the games from the tournment and all of his games from that tournment should have been annnotated.

Excellent Chess Book!
This book is excellent! It is expensive but worth every penny! It would have been nice if it included some rare photos but this is very minor. Even if you own other works of Alekhine's this is still a good book to have because of it's completeness. The publisher has other chess books of this quality on chess masters such as Capablanca, Marshall, Steinitz and Reshevsky.

The best Alekhine's games collection so far.
This huge book is of a great value to the chess enthusiast and a must for the Alekhine admirer. It is really an exhaustive investigation work and better yet, with Alekhine's own annotations on games! We must be grateful to the authors on this fine work and to the publishers for the high quality edition...

Alexander Botts: Great Stories from the Saturday Evening Post

Incredibly funny
It's hard to believe that we have such an excellently funny book like this one. It's been written long time ago. Though it's still fun to read. This is a story about a saleman who believe that he is the best one in the world. He try to solve all the problem with his own exceptional way which it's seem to be very absurd. But it works and it's very funny. I always say that it's funny because it really is.

The format of the book is like a collection of letters between Botts and his boss name Henderson. It captured me from the very first letter that Botts wrote to apply the job (I tell you that this is one of the most unique application letter). This is easy to read and don't take too long to finish.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. This is the book that will bring you joy and make you laugh. The book that will take away all tension and force you to smile with Mr Botts : The best saleman in the world.

PS. I write this review based on this book in Thai version which is still available in Thailand. For English version I didn't see any except from Library

This is a very funny book about A. Botts salesman
I read these stories as a child in the 50's and 60's in theSaturday Evening Post. I ordered this collection and they are funnierthan I remembered them. Since I got the book in June of 1999, about 10 friends have read the book and all loved it. Many people will start laughing out loud. One of the best series of short stories I have ever read. If you read this book, let me know what you think.

Timeless humor!
This collection of short stories brings the ties of the past to the situations of today. Nothing changes. Alexander Botts is the greatest salesman in the world and a sure fire winner for all readers.

Pedia was a genius; he had the love for the sport and the ability to pass it on, not only to his family and friends, but to anyone who picks up any of his books. He was incredibly talented and dedicated to his work- this book shows the passion that captured him as it does so many of us that truly love the hunt, the hounds, and the horses.

Entertaining and Captivating
Reading this collection of special hunting stories so deftly illustrated was a joy. The breadth of the collection encompasses many different periods in hunting lore and offers the reader the enjoyment of reading about hunting from those whose perspectives differed as greatly as did their writing styles. Mr. Mackay-Smith has arranged the collections and illustrations very cleverly, with a sure sense of rythmn and sharp editing skills. A wonderful gift, much treasured.

The Undivided Self: Alexander Technique and the Control of Stress

an Alexander book for doctors and psychologists
Where F. M. Alexander's own writings read almost like philosophy, Dimon's book is more grounded, with the feel of a psychology textbook. It's a distinctly objective approach, an argument for the Technique with the logical impact of a medical journal.

Cautious or skeptical people who hear the success stories of others who have overcome physical problems with the Alexander Technique say, "OK, so what is the technique? How does it work?" It can be hard to get a straight answer - it's a complicated issue, and in any event the only way to really understand the Technique is to experience it for yourself with a teacher. If an intellectual introduction is what you're after, though, and if your approach to this sort of thing is more empirical, this is the book for you.

WE MOVE THEREFORE WE ARE
This is the finest book available explaining the deeper significance of the mind/body work done by F. Mathias Alexander, creator of the Alexander Techinque. But what I liked most about reading it was its wonderfully fresh perspective on age-old human problems. For thousands of years, philoshophers have pondered the human condition from the standpoint of someone sitting under a tree. What Dimon sees is that perhaps our greatest gift is our ability to decide to get up. From his perspective, how and where we go tells us more about who we are than we might ever have thought possible. I urge anyone curious about life and eager to improve his or her own to give this book a try.

DIMON'S BOOK IS A ROADMAP TO HEAL THE MIND AND BODY
AS A PSYCHOTHERAPIST I AM ALWAYS SEEING THE DISASTROUS EFFECTS OF THE MIND AT WAR WITH THE BODY. I HAVE ALWAYS URGED MY PATIENTS TO TRY AND INTEGRATE THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE AS PART OF THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS TO RESOLVE THIS BATTLE. THEODORE DIMON, A NOTED ALEXANDER PRACTICIONER AND TEACHER (WHO HAS HIS OWN SCHOOL IN BOSTON) HAS WRITTEN A BOOK ANYONE INVOLVED IN HEALING THE MIND BODY DIVIDE MUST READ. IT WILL HELP PATIENT AND HEALER ALIKE. I URGE PEOPLE TO READ IT AND FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE.
