A Remarkable Book
On a whim, I purchased a frayed copy of this book in a thrift shop because it was published the year I was born, and I wanted to get a peek into the culture of that time. I certainly didn't expect to aquire one of the most affecting novels I've ever read. Moore, who also wrote the wrenching JUDITH HEARNE - - filmed as THE LONELY PASSION OF JUDITH HEARNE with Maggie Smith in 1987 - - has an elegant and inviting voice that immediately draws you into the persona of his heroine. (The book is told in the first person.) The writer displays subtle but complete authority as a storyteller, alternating humor with pathos, and reading this poignant and eerie character study is (to use a cliche) a treat....one that I would highly recommend.

Are you Mary Dunne, too? Internal and chilling.
Is this what the psychiatrists mean when they speak of character dissociation? Throughout a day spent in the emotionally vulnerable state of premenstrual stress, the protagonist continually runs up against reminders of the most trying times of her life, with disastrous emotional echoes.

An amazing book. The story of Mary Dunne's life is told in the space of just one day's meetings and memories. And over and over she asks herself the same question throughout the book that you must ask: Is she losing her mind? Or is this just a bad and shaky moment, exacerbated by hormonal changes?

Any woman that has ever suffered through a day with the glibly labelled PMS will recognize Mary's Mad Twin. And among those, many of us must also identify with her fearful sense of lost identity, and fears of the wide open edges of mental dysfunction.

Frightening, internal, true-to-life - this is not a book to read in an off-balance moment. But it is an amazing internal portrait of a woman. It would be an amazing portrait even if it was written by a woman; how much more so when written by a man! Yet Moore seems to effortlessly empathize completely and realistically. He has once again created a wholly believable and poignant character whom we must follow through the toils of her personal hell.

An excellent resource and text...
Moore and Bruder have, in my view, provided an excellent philosophical resource. The 3rd and 4th editions have proved invaluable in my work, both as a student and an instructor. I have no doubt that the 5th edition equals its predecessors and would readily adopt it as the required text in any Introductory Philosophy course.

the best of philosophy all in one book!
This book does an excellent job of explaining concepts and ideas of different philosophers throughout history. It is almost like Cliffs Notes for philosophy. I would recommend this book to anyone who is having trouble understanding the readings of Plato, Aristotle, Hegel, Hume, Spinoza, Kant, or any other great minds. This book is an excellent reference and is highly recommended.

Things I didn't remember I already knew
Along with Seth's material, Bartholomew's wonderful insights echo memories of things all of us know. The gist is that somehow humanity has chosen to forget what and how we are, while we were busying ourselves in our dreamworld.

The Bartholomew books provide an easy access to materials, nowadays also found elsewhere. What makes these books so outstanding though is their caring simplicity, ease of terms and words. I have found the Bartholomew guidance wonderfully complementing what I have already learned through Seth and others.

There are really no teachers, we are all students learning from each other. No-one takes precedence, but each and everyone communicates in a different voice. That not only makes each of us here on earth individual and different, it also unifies our living, common heritage in aware consciousness.

A Paradigm Shift
All the Bartholomew books are life-changing texts. The message is basically the same as the Emmanuel series, albeit somewhat more complex. All in all, a satisfying read that I have given as a gift many, many times and recommended to friends and clients alike. Try this series if your mind and spirit need to expand a bit.

A Wrong Turn Leads to a Dead End
James Lange is a practicing lawyer (drunk driving and accident cases) and a former investigator. Katherine DeWitt is a writer and editor. They claim other writers on this topic lacked legal knowledge and knew nothing of forensic science (p.ix). The writers were jurors who applied common sense and general knowledge to a problem. The authors research led them to a theory previously buried.

Joe Kennedy Sr. was not a common bootlegger during Prohibition (p.3); he made another fortune by holding import licenses for Scotch whiskies. He had made several fortunes in banking, shipbuilding, and stock brokering earlier. Like some other bankers, he supported FDR in 1932 and was given the Ambassadorship to Great Britain. Kennedy's defeatist attitude killed his political career, but his sons were ready to be all they could be. Pages 6-8 summarize Ted Kennedy's life. Ted did well as a Senator; he was a team player. Like most Senators and Congressmen, he worked in his car while someone else drove. Ted relied on other people's talents (p.10). Chapter 2 tells of Mary Jo Kopechne. No one has ever proven any irregularities in her life (p.18). The July 1969 party was at Chappaquiddick so Teddy couldn't miss it (p.20). Mary Jo didn't feel well and asked Ted to drive her to her motel. Ted made a wrong turn and ended up on the wooden bridge.

After Ted returned to Hyannis Port he was examined by a doctor (p.47). The retrograde amnesia and current confusion was diagnosed as a concussion, acute cervical strain. Ted still walked around in a daze on Monday (p.51). Ted and Joan attended Mary Jo's funeral on Tuesday. On Friday Ted plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident. Ted's candidacy for a higher office was the other victim of this accident.

Chapter 5 discusses various theories about this event. Retrograde amnesia always occurs with a concussion, and explains anyone's loss of memory (p.73). Page 117 suggests they did not report the accident immediately because of Ted's confused mental state. A tearful, emotional Ted would have ended his career. This is as good a theory as any (p.123), and avoids multiplying suppositions. Chapter 7 discusses the rumors of Ted's guilt. There was nothing wrong with a closed inquest because Mass. always did it that way (p.159). This can prevent prejudicial pre-trial publicity. Pages 160-2 explain why Ted Kennedy did NOT "get away with it".

Ted Kennedy has continued to get re-elected Senator, but has no chance for higher office. This is described as due to a "flaw in judgment". Would a drunkard and adulterer make a good President? The authors imply "no" but the history books (or the present?) suggest at least a "maybe". They ask if Nixon deserved to be hounded out of office for a "third-rate burglary" (p.166)? Yes, if "Watergate" was a cover story for the attempted assassination of George Wallace.

Edgartown was the locale for filming "Jaws" in 1974. Did the Dyke Bridge appear in a background shot of the pond? Martha's Vineyard was in the news again in 1999 when JFK Jr, his wife, and sister-in-law perished in a plane crash. We later found out JFK Jr intended to get elected Senator of NY.

Beautiful collection of African-American tales
This is such a nice collection of short stories by Mary Shepard Moore, written in plain & heart-felt language. I particularly liked the sketches that accompany the stories, as they are drawn with a special richness & depth. This book is highly recommended as traditional African folktales.

Excellent work
Looking for a fair representation of how the North American Indian tribes were affected by the intrusion of Europeans? My husband and I were, following an exchange with our 8-year-old after watching "Peter Pan", where she voiced hatred for Indians, but had no reasoning behind it. This book is unique in a variety of ways; it is a true story, from a woman's perspective, of how her life was changed after being captured by the Seneca tribe. It deals in an honest, forthright manner, reflecting Jemison's original fear and ultimate embracing of her inclusion into tribal life, and the many adavantages she found therein. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an discussion of the reality of Indians in North America, and the influence of European culture on it with their young child. Well written, nice illustrations, and at 32 pages, concise.

True History
I just saw this book last night. I was so moved by the pictures and the history in this book. My uncle is in one of the pictures and both of my grandparents worked in the mill.My mother and my uncles went to the school and were talking about all the memories they share. The grew up in pitiful times and most people wouldn't believe the history unless they lived through it themselves. We would like to know if there would be additional material written on the North Charlotte. My mother and my uncles can name some of the people in the pictures. They also have photos and more information they could share regarding this time period.

At last ! A comprehensive guide to B & Bs in California
This guidebook was an eye opener for someone whose previous impression of B&Bs was that they were usually in a small, refurbished Victorian home operated by a friendly couple. Quaint, forced conviviality, no real privacy, and certainly not for me.

Well, that's all changed. The authors' entertaining and informative style made me feel like some particularly knowledgeable (and trusted) old friends were sharing their candid comments about B&Bs all over California. They've covered a full range of accommodations, styles, and prices. It's obvious that the authors are well travelled and have given a great deal of thought to each listing. Since I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest places to stay and yet want my money's worth, I particularly like the Room Quality and Value ratings.

In addition to providing all the information I needed to plan my next trip, this was a good "read". The colorful descriptions made me want to visit some of the areas just to visit that B&B! This book is a must for anyone looking for unique and interesting places to stay while travelling through California.

Going the Distance
The authors definitely "go the distance" ... in demonstrating that Scott Adams' cast of Dilbertian characters is still alive and well in Silicon Valley!! For example, Leadership DNA = authenticity + orientation to service + bias for learning. Please. Save your hard earned cash, and re-read a real leadership book like Giuliani's or Jack: Straight from the Gut.

Insightful
Going the Distance is an great guidebook for anyone in management. You'll understand the common traps, how to identify them and how to recover. What I like best is that the authors have years of real life experience in large corporations. They didn't just interview other people about what they have done, Kennedy and Moore have lived it. This is an excellent resource, especially in these economic times.

Great Source for Execs!
This book is an exceptional source of information for executives in high technology or any business. The authors elaborate on "Eight Predictable Challenges" consisting of four in execution - innovation, product transition, strategy and alignment and four in governance: developing a culture of learning, leadership DNA, effective governance systems and board of directors oversight. The book also includes an analysis of Cisco's acquisition logic, which I found very interesting.

I'm keeping this book on my shelf where I can refer to it often.
