Great pictures, a little too regional
This book was loaded with B/W pictures of Fire Apparatus from the early part of the century, right thru the publication of the book. Many of the pictures were from Manufacturers own archives, which gives a unique idea of what the equipment looked like pre-service. A great many of the pictures were from WI, and Western US states, with not enough from the Northeastern US.

Color pictures of some of the more noteworthy trucks would have been nice, to set off distinct eras in equipment manufacture.

A Very Good Reference Guide
I am a serious toy fire engine collecter (over 100 and counting).
This book is an invaluable guide in dating the fire engines and support vehicles that come my way. This book contains the pictures and descriptions of fire engines used by volunteer fire departments over a 150 year span (1850-2000). One note of concern, it virtually ignores the American Lafrance company which made the cadillac of fire engines during virtually the same span of the book.

The Woods get 4 stars
"The Napping House Wakes Up" is sure to please any fan of Don and Audrey Wood's goofy children's books. The tale is simple, an offbeat version of the classic "House That Jack Built" theme of a growing catastrophe, and ends with a waking bang. The pop-up mechanics are silly enought to bring a smile to any child or collector.

Great pictures of some wonderful cars and their haulers
A fantastic collection of old photographs with well done text remarks. Noteworthy are the "one offs", that is the special construction rigs. This book could have been better if some articles of historic text filled in the gaps.

Excellent coverage on one of the best kinds of trucks ever!
Ever since I was a little kid, I loved car carriers for some reason. Every day, I would go to the busiest road I knew and watch for them. I still watch and love them today, but now that I have this awesome picture book, I don't have to go to the highway all the time to watch these cool trucks go by. You can only rely on Inconografix to bring you the best picture books on your favorite kinds of vehicles

Practical book on wood design
I used the book as a textbook for a course on structural wood design (the term "Timber" design is a misnomer that is commonly used because it has been the traditional term for engineered structural wood design). The books covers beams, columns, connections, trusses, laminated timber, and plywood.

The book takes a practical but thorough approach to the design of wood structures - avoiding an overly theoretical approach. Although the title specifies "architects and builders" it is appropriate for engineers too, and to get the most use out of the book, the reader should have a background in mechanics of materials.

One particularly timely topic covered is the behavior and design of diaphragms and shearwalls, which is the most common method of resisting wind and earthquake forces.

The book includes many useful tables - something that many other books leave for the reader to collect from end-of-the-chapter references.

Overall, in my opinion, this is one of the best - if not the best - book currently available on structural wood design.

A very good timber book....
A well written book with easy to follow examples. This was my first experience with timber design and I found the book very useful as a practicing engineer. The examples were complete and easy to follow and apply.

Stellar Book!
Although this book is written for children, I, as an adult found myself thoroughly enjoying it as I read it. Several times I was aware of the hairs on my neck standing up as I read. I would highly recommend it to young readers who enjoy a good mystery. I am anxiously awaiting a sequel.

Stellar Woods Is A Great Book!
I really enjoyed this book, even though it was given to my 10 year-old daughter to read! This book had mystery, adventure and kept the readers attention. It is a great example of team work between a brother and sister who are out to solve a mystery. It also highlights a great example of trust between parents and their children.

I'm anxiously waiting for the sequel!!

Great book, annoying singing
I wish I had bought just the audiobook and text. The singing in this production is off-key and extremely grating. It would have been much better if the story had been on one side of the cassette and the yowling on the other. I hide it so my daughter can't play it.

Outstanding Production!
My family and I absolutely love this musical production of King Bidgood. The songs are extremely clever and terrifically performed. We all enjoy singing along. I have shared this tape with a first-grade class and they also thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend it to everyone!

Florida's Fragile Wildlife
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Florida (01 March, 2001)
Author: Don A. Wood
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

Helping and accommodating Florida's wildlife
This well written book, should be useful for both land manager and concerned citizen. For many of Florida's "fragile species", Don presents background natural history research, but most importantly highlights survey and land management methods. For proactive management, this may include the use of fire to manipulate habitat succession, for example to help the gopher tortoise. Wood also sees the opportunity of species coexisting with other land uses, for example caracara and agriculture, or set back distances from eagle nests. He offers some urban strategies such as not feeding sandhill crane, or accommodating burrowing owls. Wood recognized some common problems among the species, such as habitat fragmentation, the need for urban strategies, and the confusion of resident versus winter populations when doing population surveys.

Although the pictures are useful, their use is sometimes uneven. For example, there are three examples of a gopher tortoise burrow, but no picture of salt marsh sparrow habitat. The maps were not always included, e.g., there was no map of the Florida Grasshopper sparrow distribution. I would have also liked some discussion of coastal shorebird and tern species, which would also benefit from human awareness.

Very Original
Slyvia Woods' compostitions are very original and delightful to play. What is neat about this book is that all the songs match a story about a harper named Brandiswhiere and his apprentice, Telena. You can read the story outloud, and then play where it is indicated, but I've found that playing individual pieces works just as well.

I particularly liked the lively Gypsy Mirage and the mournful Lament. However, a couple of the songs are too long to play, and do not keep your audience's attention (in general). If you decide to play these pieces, I would recommend buying the tape or CD of Sylvia playing, so that you may hear her own interpretation.

Informative, and well written
The WTCA has done a service to all novice Truss Designers. As a Truss Designer and an Engineering Student, I've found that the Handbook is educating. The way photographs are incorperated into the book to show proper and improper truss usage is very interesting.

Rude Giants
This is a great read aloud for young children. The pictures are colorful and inviting. The story is fantasy/folk-tale like. It reminds me illustation wise of Jack and the Beanstalk. It is written in understandable text. Beatrix has a wonderful cow. The Rude Giants are hungry and want to eat the cow. Beatrix manipulates the giants into becoming clean, well-mannered giants while saving her cow. The pictures of the giants are humorous, not scary for young readers. The characters are well-developed; as well as, the storyline. Audrey Wood has another enjoyable book, written and illustrated, to be loved by all.
