Bruce Burk's "GAME BIRD CARVING..." explains the bird carving process in a detailed, logical and understandable sequence. It is well illustrated, but unfortunately all photos are black & white.
Another negative is the book's age, making a few of the procedures a bit dated by recent developments in materials.
Overall, however, the book remains a solid reference for the bird carver, worth purchasing for its historical and practical value including a thorough listing of gamebird dimensions (lengths, widths, wingspans, etc.) in the appendix.

The decoy carvers "Bible" just about sums up what can be said of this book. If you carve decorative wildfowl, songbirds, or hunting decoys you MUST have this book. I use this book every day in my shop and painting studio. I use it so much I bought an extra copy so I wouldn't have to carry it back and forth any longer. Perfect for the beginner, intermmediate, or advanced carver. Every professional carver that I'm aware of references this book. No book before or after has covered the art of the counterfit bird as comprehensively as this book.

Burke's "Game Bird Carving" should be considered one of the all-time best how-to manuals. Informative, easy to read text, clear photographs, and most important; an easy to follow color blending method helps neophytes and experienced woodcarvers alike develop basic to advanced wildfowl carvings. As an instructor and carver for over twenty years, Game Bird Carving was the first carving book I bought. I still consider it a valuable reference.

I've had this book for almost 2 years and it is the best I've seen. It is very well written and very thorough. It begins with an explanation of the structure of wood at the cellular level, in some cases, in rather great depth. There are chapters on techinques for obtaining and preparing wood samples as well as a description of some of the necessary instruments (hand lens, microscope etc). The sections on identification are divided up into softwoods, hardwoods and tropical woods. I will agree that the section on tropical woods is not as deep as the other two sections, but I would say its in proportion to the chances of you happening up on a piece of rare tropical wood and having to identify it. I have sucessfully indentified dozens of woods using this book. Be advised that a microscope is definately needed when using this book, in my humble opinion. It doesnt have to be a megabuck model, but 100-250x would be very helpful. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to go beyond the "if its brown, its walnut, if its white its maple" level, and get deeper into wood identification. ID-ing a chunk of wood is very satisfying and this book makes it possible!

Although this in no way detracts from the overall quality, there is (I feel duty-bound to point out) one completely wrong picture in this book. On page 170 there is a description of sipo / utile / Entandrophragma utile with an picture of an obviously entirely different wood. This is not mentioned in the Errata sheet included with this book. Also, but this is less important, the picture of sapele on page 169 is upside down (as are those of a few other woods here and there).

For those interested in identifying wood this book is a steal! This is not the only introductory text on the topic, but it sure is the most readable and the most accessible. The color pictures of the end grain are unparalled in any other book. The text is crystal clear and well paced. If this book has a flaw it is the focus on North American woods, at the cost of tropical woods, but you cannot have everything.
Actually I began with an understatement: this book would be a steal at twice the price!

This book is filled with good quality color pictures of many projects. It also explains how to make the complicated parts of wind toys. It tells what kinds of wood will hold up, and what kinds of wood will fail. It improved my whirligig designs greatly, and added many new ideas for my new ones. Well worth the money.

I've had this book for a year and am finally making my first project (How the west was lost). IMHO you need to have some woodworking experience to do the projects other than the very simple ones. Making small parts is difficult on all but a scroll saw or bandsaw with a small blade. Step-by-step specific instructions are scarce. Still, I give this book 4 stars because I really like the projects. I also like being able to come up with my own colors and painting rather than paint by the numbers. I can tell you that the materials that they tell you to use for the mechanical parts are right on. Wire is just too flimsy from my experience. Use a photocopy machine to increase or decrease your pattern sizes. Use spray adhesive to stick the patterns on the wood and you'll get the size you want.

Here's a "how to" text that works! WHIRLIGIGS AND WEATHERVANES is beautifully formatted with rich bold photography, clean helpful graphics and clear textual instruction. After reading Paul Fleischman's WHIRLIGIG, I wanted my students to share the experience of the novel's protagonist, 16-year-old Brent Bishop, who must build four whirligigs. Brent finds a used book that gets him started. It's simple, clear and useful, and it provides the basic skills and knowledge Brent needs to create his own inspired inventions. I discovered WHIRLIGIGS AND WEATHERVANES while searching for a very similar title Fleischman used in his story - Make Your Own Whirligigs and Weathervanes - which just MAY be an invention inspired by Schoonmaker and Woods's text!) My husband and I are now finishing OUR first whirligig - "Soul of the Woodworker" - incorporating a profile of my husband's head and a silhouette of my left hand! Instructions are found on pp 44-5!

This book caters to people who want to make art rather than basic functional houses to attract wild birds. I just wanted a book where I could get plans for a variety of bird houses that I could make with simple hand tools. I was also looking for more info on the particulars of what species are attracted to a particular type of structure. Sure, the houses in the book are great but I didn't want to make a log cabin or a post-modern art-deco bungalow. I just wanted to learn how to make a few basic houses and learn how to attract and feed wild birds. I had to send the book back.

After building every house in this book I wanted more. I went in search for something that would give me as much pleasur as this book. I've paid as much as 100 dollars and now have 8 books. What a waste!!! The plans in this book are easy to read and follow and are one of a kind bird houses. please Bruce and David don't leave us hanging.

This book in not as easy to use as I would like. In some cases the information is embedded in personal stories and doesn't get to the point fast enough. There s/b more illustrations and step-by-step procedures. On the positive side, he offers many possibilities for solving your finishing problems.

very informative

From a new grad student's perspective, i have to say that this book is absolutely terrible!! The writers provided NO useful examples in the chapters and for the examples that are there, they never showed how they generated the results. Its pretty obvious that these guys are not interested in teaching and that very little thought was put into this book. I would recommend this book be banned from the classroom!

Overall this is a good book in terms of coverage and explanation of methods. My background is in math and physics, however, so sudden shifts of notation (avoidable with just a few lines of explanation) lose me. In chapter 4 we find "The transmission network consists of complex impedances" followed by a definition of the network Y matrix. But wait: the Y matrix is defined in terms of a y value for each line. What is the y value for a line? Is it an impedance? No, it's an admittance, but the text doesn't mention that conceptual inversion. Another example is in problem 4.2 of the same chapter. This problem contains a diagram with values of X for each transmission line. What is X? It looks like it should be Y, judging from the previous problem. But wait, there are no capacitors in our problem diagram, so it's not clear. I scan through the preceding chapter for some variable whose standard notation is X. No luck. This makes an otherwise conceptually clear and methodologically informative book VERY frustrating, at least for those of us not steeped in the typical notation of power systems analysis.

The code that goes with this book uses Pascal. This is difficult as it is hard to get Pascal compiler nowadays. It would be useful if it was written in C. The authors do not have a website for this book. They could have put errata, comments from purchasers and book updates, etc.

the book glides over all aspects of boat building, photos old and poor,i found as a novice i was still asking the same questions after reading the book(and maybe a few more)than i had before , gives a minimum amount of information and tries (i think)to promote a sale of his boat plans.
