The Perfect Gift for the Under Six Crowd!
Little Fur Family was originally published in 1946. It was written by Margaret Wise Brown (Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny) and illustrated by Garth Williams. The book tells the story of a day in the life of a litle fur bear who lives in his little fur world. The text is told in a rhyming format adored by most young children. Its miniature size appeals to those who are miniature themselves! In addition, you should purchase the copy that has the faux fur cover. It makes the book as sweet and comforting in texture as it does in content. A great stocking stuffer and a wonderful present for any time of the year...Little Fur Family is a sure hit.

Brings out the essence of youth
The Little Fur Family is the best of childhood, remembered as wild sights and cozy feelings. To be able to boil the spiritual and emotional experience of raw child-ness down to the essential syrup is the perfection of Margaret Wise Brown. The best comparison would be having to condense a biographical novel to a haiku, and Brown does it in the same seductive style as the sea to draw the eyes, a river to the ears, and a blue sky to the deepest imagination. The story is told through the mind of a little fur child, who lives with his family in the wood. As he travels in his world that day, little wonder that it takes the reader, child or adult, to their own memories. Even though my bookshelves house books by Chomsky, Foucault, and Mahfouz, The Little Fur Family is always my heartfelt favorite. This book is a sweet story without having the backlash of crawling around in the muck of saccharine characters or the rabid commercialism of children's stories that have action figures or theme parks. If this story stimulates your appetite, I also recommend Goodnight Moon, another Margaret Wise Brown classic

This is the most delightfulk children's story I have read.
One of the greatest joys of my life was sitting at the dining room table watching my 7-year-old granddaughter reading The Little Fur Family to my 4-year-old grandson while the two older grandchildren joined in singing the little song. I shall never forget how much love they showed for each other as so beautifully depicted in Margaret Wise Brown's extraordinararily charming little book. There is no other children's book quite like it.

This book is as good, or better, than I remembered it.
This was one of my favorite books when I was a child. I even bought a book to have in reserve BEFORE I got married.

Margaret Wise Brown has put together a rhythmic, engaging story about a bunny that seeks for its own place. As the story progresses there are lessons that can be learned and taught about changes of the seasons, and where animals live and what they do.

I like the pictures, the story, the whole ball of wax. We have read this book over and over to our children. When it resurfaces from the bottom of a stack of books it still gets read through a couple of times -- by popular demand!

5 stars all the way.

A gentle, hope-inspiring story, beautifully illustrated
Home for a Bunny is a gem, both beautifully written and illustrated. Its gentle rhythm is smooth, great for reading aloud, and reminds one of the journey the bunny is taking: "Down the road and down the road he went. He was going to find a home of his own; a home for a bunny, a home of his own, under a rock, under a stone, under a log, or under the ground. Where would a bunny find a home?" The illustrations are by Garth Williams, lending the story extra beauty and realism. (This same man illustrated the Little House on the Prairie books.)

HFAB is also a rarity in baby books in that it has a recognizable plot, with scenes and dialogue. This gives parents a chance to practice their storytelling skills. I enjoy using different voices for the characters (e.g., a low, low voice for the frog, and a nasal one for the groundhog). Plus, having a plot helps develop the child's ability to follow a sequence of events.

And for the crowning praise--it is my 2-year old's favorite book. As soon as we finish reading it, he asks to hear it again, and again, and again. How can a book get any better than that?

Home For a Bunny is a Classic!
Home for a Bunny should be a part of every child's library. This was the first book I learned to read and 25 years later I am buying it for my new baby girl. The colorful pictures, rhythmic text, and the loveable ending are unforgettable. Home for a Bunny is a classic!

A wonderful childhood memory to pass on
I have been looking for a copy of this book for years. While visiting my brother recently I discovered that he had the copy that we read over and over again when we were children. It's in poor shape, a testimony to the use it received. He wouldn't part with it, so I am so pleased to find it available again. I'm sure my 2-year old grandson will enjoy this sweet and gentle story as much as I did.

Incredibly touching
I first discovered this book while teaching Kindergarten several years ago. The story and it's wonderful illistrations struck a chord of wonder and notalgia in me that I had not experienced in a long, long time. Thereafter, it became my favorite storytime book with the children. The book was lost one year to my distress, so you can imagine the joy I felt in finding it here, available to the publc once more. This is a book that should be read and enjoyed by all.

What can I say?
What can anyone say about this tender book. It had an enourmous influence on me as I grew up. I loved the language and the pictures. Today I have sold paintings and some of my writing. And writing poetry comes very very easy to me. This is a book that has made a difference.

Smile while your read
Excellent book. I read this book to my 51/2-year-old
and HAD to bring it to her Kindergarten teacher
to share with her class. The rhyming is superb, the
illustrations are exceptional: humorous as the text,
complementing it, and adding an additional dimension.
Entertaining for adult and young readers, it challenges
our presumed knowledge of these prehistoric creatures.
Guranteed to make you smile.

The Will Always be Dinosaurs!
Dinosaurs Forever is a delightful collection of witty, irreverent poems that take some scientific facts known about dinosaurs and combines them with funny, very hip verse. These poems are complimented by Lynn Munsinger's detailed, expressive illustrations and it all adds up to one charming, amusing book that everyone in the family will enjoy. There's even a pronounciation guide to help parents with some of the multi-syllable dinosaur names. This is a wonderful book that kids of all ages will want to read again and again. Share it and enjoy!

Primeval Poetry in Motion
What a wonderfully playful book! This is a marriage of clever wordplay and uniquely silly illustrations by William Wise and Lynn Munsinger. The dinosaur poetry is not only fun but informative as it combines imaginative verse with dinosaur facts: What do dinosaurs eat? How did they get along with other dinosaurs? And why could a T-Rex never have been pink. I loved the poems for their keen humor and downright silliness. The illustrations were a special treat (I still giggle at the picture of a very frightened gorgosaurus exposing his massive teeth in the dentist's chair!)

Creative and inventive - and great way for children to remember which dinosaur is which! (Or is that a problem only adults have...? Never fear...there's a helpful pronunciation guide included.) If you liked such poetry classics as Shel Silverstein's WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS, you will delight in DINOSAURS FOREVER.

This stunning book rights old wrongs!
Garth Williams is a genius illustrator of the very best in children's books. You simply can't do better.

...But you can do worse. If you only know the GB editions of GW's books from the *1970's*, you'll be in for a wonderful shock from this book.

The image quality is 3X as good! So bright, sharp, distinctive and subtle in coloring. These are basically fine art plates. Lucky us! Part of it is probably due to the very high quality paper, but most of it has to be due to the LOVE OF THE ART on behalf of those who published this tribute Treasury.

But there's more. (And this is where it gets a bit nasty.) For some reason, in the *1970's* GB editions of these books, the publisher often DELETED PAGES! Several of the books featured in their ENTIRETY here have many pages that never appeared in the 1970's editions. And many of these pages feature the VERY BEST ART! It was so wonderful to finally find them here. ...Dismaying as well. What a crime! I can only imagine that the publisher was trying to save paper costs: they always killed pages in groups of 4. Can you imagine the low, venal insult to art and children in doing such a thing? Here's a real example of an artist pouring his heart out, but being thwarted by chiselers. Well, maybe there's another explanation: I hope so for the sakes of GB.

Thank heavens, wrongs are gloriously righted in this gorgeous new volume.

I daresay you will cherish it as one of your most favorite story books, if not your #1. Thanks!

Excellent book
"A Garth Williams Treasury of Best-Loved Books" is a must have, right up there with "The Golden Books Treasury of Elves and Fairies". Williams is one of the best children's illustrators. His drawings have such magic that anyone who sees them can remember them well after childhood is long gone, and leaves them with a hunger to see them again. This book is pleasingly large, appx. 12" x 10.5" and the drawings are nice and big. The stories featured in the collection are: A Tale of Tails; Baby Farm Animals; Three Bedtime Stories: The Three Little Kittens, The Three Little Pigs, The Three Bears; Animal Friends; The Golden Sleepy Book featuring: The Whispering Rabbit, Close Your Eyes, Going to Sleep; The Friendly Book; Home for a Bunny; The Sailor Dog; The Kitten Who Thought He Was a Mouse; and Mister Dog. The book is 149 pages long.

Comprehensive History of Civil War Blockade Running
Stephen Wise has managed to both write a comprehensive history packed with information which is also very readable. Truly a remarkable feat. The book succeeds at both imparting the general course of the blockade running and the many fascinating incidents which make up the history of blockade running.

THE Book to have about blockade running!
Stephen R. Wise's opus on the blockade runners is not to be missed! He ably describes the blockade itself, the ships and men that challenged it, and backs it all up with valuable charts and tables. Truly definitive.

a good auxiliary reference book
To evaluate this book, the reader needs to know what it does and doesn't attempt to do. It isn't intended to be a complete introduction to the subject of heraldry, and very fairly warns the reader of this right off the bat, recommending Warne's _Observer Book of Heraldry_ or something like it for any reader lacking knowledge of the basics. (Having said that, though, this book does explain how to read a blazon, and in describing the evolution of medieval heraldry will give you *some* grounding in the basics.)

In restricting its scope to heraldry of the medieval period, the book is geared toward the military role of heraldry and its usage in the 14th and 15th centuries, so it only goes into the aspects one would have seen on a battlefield or in a tournament. (It doesn't try to go into all the finicky details of mottoes and supporters, for example.) Wise has attempted to cover continental heraldry as well as English heraldry, but gives warning that since many European Colleges of Heralds no longer exist (and thus, no central repositories of records exist for the affected countries), there is a bias toward English heraldry simply because that's where the records are most complete, easily available, and written in a language accessible to a wide audience.

In discussing the evolution of the role of heralds and shields, the basic rules of reading a blazon are eventually presented, but also which tinctures (colours) one would be likely to see, and what colours had to be added as the growing number of registered insignia forced heralds to work harder at coming up with unique devices.

While some examples are given (8 pages of colour plates, and quite a few illustrations of various coats of arms, particularly notable English insignia of the medieval period), the book is not intended as an encyclopedia of medieval blazons; there are too many, and they vary too much depending on a campaign setting. It'll give you the tools to find what you need in such a reference book, though.

Bringing Spirituality Down to Earth ...
The author, William Elliot is someone you might know, the boy living next door, who went away to the University, whose parents died when he was young, someone who was raised by loving parents, that is, until they died when he was a teen. He keeps alive the values and love his parents showed him but he is searching for something. He is looking for meaning - meaning to their death and his loss. He was a psychology major at the University of Wisconsin when he conceived of interviewing the "wise and spiritual" people who are alive today. His method was deceptively simple ... he sought answers to 25 - 30 questions that might unlock the secrets to his dilemma. Questions such as, "What is the meaning or purpose of life?" "Do you believe in G-d or Ulitmate Reality?" "Why is there suffering, evil in the world? and What is its cause?" "What is important to you?" "What are the three most important problems in life?" He was dissuaded from pursuing this endeavor, to write a book about his conversation with the "wise and spiritual" people whom he interviewed. He overcame challenges and obstacles to interview the people on his list, all the while holding firmly to his goal. He met and interviewed: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Ram Dass, Norman Vincent Peale, Robert Schuller, Jean Houston, Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Rabbi Harold Kushner, psychologist Albert Ellis, psychologist B.F. Skinner, Pir Vilayat Khan, Frances Vaughn, Stephen Levine and even Mother Theresa. He interviewed a total of 21 high-profile persons deemed 'wise and spiritual' by modern standards. The author does not interpret the answers for us, instead he writes out the answers given to him by each person interviewed. In some cases, he writes an introduction prior to the interview, letting the reader know how he managed to get an appointment or interview with the "important" person or else he describes some interesting event or circumstance concerning the interview. He seldom makes a judgement about the person or what they said ... his writing style is matter-of-fact and straight forward. This style of writing makes the book a valuable and worthwile reading experience. It is as if, you, yourself, decided what questions to ask and took the time to write out the answers, sometimes, in utter amazement, that you snagged the interview with his or her eminence ... The author also made a trek to Nepal to meditate and visit one of the most spiritual climates and areas of the world. We learn of his experiences and interactions with people he met there. This book is recommended for anyone who has any interest in spirituality or has read any book by the persons whom the author interviewed. It can be said the author found the truth which he was seeking ... Erika B. (erikab93)

Tying Rocks to Clouds : Meetings and Conversations With Wise
William Elliott's writing style is easily read. The story of years and years of travels focuses on those interviewed and telling their story in such a way as to bring many interviews into a perspective for the reader's appreciation of what Elliott's life has been about -- all a well-woven fabric. His objective stays well-centered. That gave me a real sense in reading this most interesting book about various religous leaders and her/his successful living out their dedication. Elliott has indicated his next one is on experiences of 40 days in the desert in looking at how Jesus did his forty days there two centuries ago. I am excitedly looking for it to show on the market.

Extra Ordinarily Illuminating
William Elliot is a brave soul who had the naive courage to approach some of the greatest philosophers and spiritual leaders of our times to gain their perspective on the meaning of life. Remarkably, he gained access to a number of these prophets, who answered his questions in a thoughtful and decidedly heartfelt manner. There is much to provoke thought and inspire action in these pages. As drawn as I was to the book, eager to move from interview to interview, I found I needed to pace myself to better absorb what I was reading. Sometimes I felt my heart sing with the joy of hearing the expression of a kindred spirit. Other times, my desire to be compassionate and respect the beliefs of all felt challenged by the expressions of people with a greatly divergent perspective. Both experiences were of great benefit to me. The wonder of this book, outside the fact that it even came to be, is the engaging narrative Elliott weaves through the interviews. In his unabashedly honest, touching, and humorous, style, Elliott wryly observes that the path to "knowing" can be a twisted and never ending journey of delightful surprises. Travel along with him, you won't be disappointed.
