A Classic
This is the definitive work on lost treasure in Oklahoma. The author gives an excellent survey of most of the lost treasures in the state which are commonly known (and some which are not so well known). The author seems to have researched the treasures in the western half of the state, particularly those in the Lawton area, more heavily than the treasures in the eastern half of the state. Nonetheless, on all of the treasures surveyed, there is sufficient information in the bibliography for the serious student to start researching any of the treasures.

Really interesting!
I thought this book was really interesting! It provides the stories of lost gold mines, buried outlaw loot, old Spanish mining efforts, and more. Includes lots of pictures.

For the serious treasure hunter, this book may provide a place to start looking for sources, but it doesn't contain any detailed maps or secrets.

Nonetheless, I would strongly recommend this book to people with an interest in lost treasure or with an interest in the history of Oklahoma. (I found out from this book that I grew up about 20 miles from a lost gold mine area!)

the best book for new unix users
I collect unix books, close to 300. This is the best book for beginners in unix, it actually shows a beginner how to install (the only beginner book that does this) 2 flavors of unix, sun solaris and sco's unix. the chapters are short and to the point. errors are nearly non-existent. If you are serious about learning solaris, then start with this one and go straight to answer2book, the solaris documentation set that comes with the operating system. You can easily multi-boot solaris with all the windows flavors as well as ms-dos. Mark Sobell's book is also an excellent source.

Highly recommended for neophyte UNIX programmers.
Steve Moritsugu and DTR Business Systems' Practical UNIX is recommended for UNIX programmers who seek a reference book of solutions for common UNIX problems. From modifying and compressing files to determining how to extract fields and using networking capabilities, this expands upon the UNIX platform of knowledge.

Wonderful story! Wonderful illustrations!
I use this book often with my elementary students to show them that words can create pictures in their readers' minds. The author paints a picture on each page, vividly describing fond memories of different parts of her vacation at the cabin. The illustrator supports that with incredibly detailed pictures. The kids were in awe of this book, it was very powerful for them, and for their writing!

"Head'n up North to the cabin!"
A beautiful story about a girl's experiences with her family at a lake. The illustrations enhance the story line providing an opportunity to re-live past memories of my own. I recommend this to anyone who has spent time near/on a lake. A great gift idea for all ages!

An action thriller to make you want to grow a beard!
I first stumbled across this novel in my village library when in my late teens. Now ten years later the story's still haunting me and it can still reinvoke the feelings that were so much a part of me when I was young; rebellion, longing, hope, pride.

I managed to get hold of a copy through Amazon and now it takes pride of place on my bookshelf. If you like to lose yourself in a tale of adventure that'll take you back to your youth then you can't go far wrong by grabbing hold of a copy of this novel (though you'll be lucky if it's still available!).

A legenday motorcycle gang lived life to the full in the sixties, but now years later they must reach out for one another and band together to solve a mystery that darkened their past and forced their separation. It's a corny enough story, but it's told with enough gusto and feeling it'll have you on the edge of your seat longing to be riding alongside such heroes.

If you're lucky enough to still be a teen grab this novel and devour it as I once did. You'll not regret it! My other recommendations are any of the early novels by Marc Olden (Gai Jin, Oni etc - again hard if not impossible to get hold of), those of William Diehl (Sharkey's Machine, Chamelion etc ) or those of Travanian (Shibumi, Eiger Sanction etc). Happy Reading!!!

An excellent and rare find.
Good books on monitors are hard to come by and this is one of them. Up-to-date info and beautiful photo's (the one on the cover is almost worth the price of the book IMO) make it a must for anyone interested in these incredible dragon-like lizards.

From the magnificient and beautiful Perentie to the cute Short-Tailed Pygmy Monitor all the varanids occuring in Australia are described and illustrated. It is also a good reference for those who wish to keep them as pets.

Chill!
Most of us know what stress is, and we know it can adversely affect our health. What we don't know are practical, and quick, ways to reduce stress.

Steve Wilson, a clinical psychologist, offers just the help we've been looking for in CHILL! 271 Tips, Practices & Secrets for Staying Healthy, Happy & Sane Under Pressure. Wilson says he has been "studying ways to beat stress for more than thirty years. From ancient wisdom to New Age, from spiritual to psychological, mental, emotional, physical, serious, solemn, or fun . . . there is something for everyone."

The first section of his book explains exactly what stress is and how our bodies react to both positive and negative stress. The bulk of the book is devoted to his 271 tips, practices, and secrets. He ends with an appendix that includes "The Top 10 Practices That Can Change Your Life," a section on inner peace, and an original humorous prayer for relaxation.

Wilson suggests choosing several methods of stress relief from his 271 techniques, and then practicing those methods daily. That gives you some proven ways to reduce the pressure when you need to. Some of his tips are just for fun, such as blowing soap bubbles when stuck in traffic or telling people to have good day in pig Latin. Others are more serious, such as "Learn to meet your own needs" and "Remember you always have options."

Known as The Joyologist, for his philosophy of "Don't Postpone Joy," Wilson writes in a light-hearted and easy-to-read manner. He reminds us that "life is for enjoying."

People wishing to replace the stress and pressure in their lives with joy will learn how to do so quickly and easily in CHILL! 271 Tips, Practices & Secrets for Staying Healthy, Happy & Sane Under Pressure.

And since you probably don't want to be surrounded by tense and negative people, present copies of CHILL! to co-workers, friends, and family as well!

Jobs rocks the party that rocks the body
First of all... I am not an impartial judge of this book sice Jobs is my idle. I think book represents his life with Apple as well as personally fairly well. For cultist Apple fans like myself there weren't too many surprises. Overall a great read.
Also, I have been up for about three days now so I don't even know if I am coherent at this point.

...review
...The author's ideas on the origins of the Slovenian people are badly researched, lazy, and basic. Certainly undeserving of any words bigger than 'bad', 'lazy,' and 'basic.'

The rest of it is quite good I guess, noting there's few reasonable attempts in English at a book on Slovenia...

Slovenia through pink-colored glasses
If this third edition of Lonely Planet Slovenia is anything like the first, it warrants a complete overhaul of the section entitled "WW II & the Partisan Struggle." Much misinformation has been disseminated since the end of that war, and only recently has the truth emerged concerning the true patriots of Slovenia. It is obvious that the author was given false and outdated information, and he therefore unwittingly perpetuates the myth of the Slovenian "collaborators."

It is so good that even a local Slovenian wants to own one!
I had no choice - this was the only guide book on Slovenia in the bookshop last year (1997). But boy, what a guide book! In fact, I would rate it the best guide book I've ever read. It had excellent information, including hotel fax number, which was a great help. We also had two local contacts in Ljubljana who told us where to visit. When they read this book they were impressed by how thorough it was. The route they suggested was exactly the same one written in the book. One of them even asked if he could have the book after we're done with it! (The LP guide book on Austria, which we also used for the same trip, was not nearly as good.) One of the hotels it recommended was the Jadran Hotel in Bled, which was an extention of the Grand Hotel Toplice but cost much less. We had a room whose balcony faces the lake. Oh, what a view! I highly recommend a visit to Slovenia, and this book. Follow whatever is suggested in it, and you are in for a treat! One suggestion: most hotels now have e-mail addresses. It would be great if they were published in the guide book along with the phone and fax numbers. --Leslie Gabriel
