The Guide to Maine Flatwater.
This book is an absolute neccessity for anyone planning to do extensive flatwater paddling in Maine. The book divides maine into regions and then gives detailed descriptions of the most choice paddling spots in those regions. Each overall description entails a map of the lake, general decription of the lake (scenery, fish species, things to look for etc.), campsite reservation numbers if neccesary, and most important DETAILED DIRECTIONS. Unless you are confining your paddling to the southern region, most of the lakes will require driving on winding dirt logging roads that can confuse even the most seasoned forester(I know I was one). However with this book, I was able to find the put in with ease every time. Happy Paddling!

Versatile and adaptable
This wonderful resource offers a comnination of activities. It focuses on the standard vocabulary and literary devices, but it also gives worksheets to aid in character development. In addition, it offers related improvizations for students, activities to use with a video and plot summaries to help teachers and students make sense of the action. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone who would like to expand their lessons beyond the traditional dusty analysis of Shakespeare.

Finally! Something to USE
I don't know about you, but I often buy a lot of teaching JUNK. But-finally, I found something to USE.

Often, Shakespeare teaching materials are either watered down so much that it insults the high school students' intelligence. Or, the materials are so centered on performance that the average student becomes scared to death of Shakespeare.

The materials included in John Wilson Swope's activities book is right up my ally. Through the help of his activities, I can complete a two week literature workshop that includes literture circles engaging students in discussions of not only themes, but figurative language, vocabulary and connection to today's culture. What a relief- students don't have to be afraid they will be made to perform in front of the class (not everyone likes the spotlight). With the activities, I can also create a written final in addition to a performing final (some suggestions for performance is included, like unthreatening sock puppet skits). Students are responsible individually and as a group. And, this material is extremely helpful to those on a block schedule. In 85 mins., I need to change my activites 2-3 times a class period; these activities help me do just that. Thanks Swope!

The Restructuring of American Religion

A seminal work on American religious history
Wuthnow's book is a thoughtful and well-researched monograph on major trends in American religious experience since the end of World War II. Wuthnow sees the most significant change as being a decline in the denominational divisions that were once so important in American religious life, and their replacement by a huge chasm between liberal and conservative religious sensibilities, a division Wuthnow points out often cuts as much through denominations as separates them. Perhaps his most important contribution is his effort to place this restructuring in the context of larger trends in American society, notably the divisive politics and cultural innovation of the sixties, the changing role of women and the trememdous expansion of higher education that occurred after World War II. He also notes a degree of continuity between the conservative versus liberal division and the early twentieth-century fundamentalist-modernist conflict within American religion. He is careful, though, to explain and contextualize the greater success the evangelical Christian movement has had in building a movement and mobilizing followers than did the earlier and in many ways similar fundamentalist camp. Perhaps one's only caveat here might be that the book raises many questions it does not fully address about the extent to which American culture is becoming genuinely secular, if it is doing so. Written at a high level of generality, the book also leaves one wondering about how the division of religious life into polarized camps of liberalism and conservativism affects the subjective spiritual experience of Americans. In brief, this book is a major and analytical treatment of a topic that remains very germane to how Americans now live and worship; those desiring to understand how American religion got where it is today should read it.

SPADA - Anthology of Swordsmanship
SPADA is a journal that contains some of most current ideas on historical swordsmanship by a number of the field's leading researchers. As a student of historical swordsmanship myself, I think it is an excellent step in the right direction for the progression of this school of study.

As far as the contents of the book are concerned, my hat goes off to the editor, Stephen Hand, for distilling such a diverse, and yet interesting range of papers from the vast array of excellent treatises available.

The book also features some interesting reports on some of the most recent activities undertaken in the WMA community. This provides the reader with a very good 'big picture' perspective into what advances are being made in what fields, and an appreciation for the vast range of people who are now interested in historical swordsmanship.

With regards to it's practicality, the book caters for many different tastes - whether you are interested in the finesse of renaissance fencing, or simply a medieval re-enactor using the trusty 'sword and shield' method. SPADA provides useful insights and a greater understanding of historical methods of fighting.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining a greater appreciation of historical swordsmanship, and anyone who is curious to know what the swordmanship community out there is doing. I rate it as a 'must have' item, and I look forward to more SPADA releases in the future.

cheers

enjoying Texas Tortes
Get this book. The recipes are wonderful and well written. No Blah-blah. There are tidy little illustrations, and a nice section of basic components that are used throughout the book.

I bought the book at the annual UT press sale, where the employees said "He's been bringing us samples an they are wonderful!"

Analysis for regular people
Wilson explains how to think in everyday terms that make sense to regular people (although some of his examples are British, not American.)

I highly recommend it for anyone who needs to develop their analysis skills or who is responsible for improving those skills in others.
