A fascinating text!
Journalism Today is a fascinating text for use in a beginning journalism class. Being a new high school journalism instructor, I've found the information as enlightening as my students. It provides many great suggestions for stories and wonderful insights into the field of journalism. A must have for young journalists!

A classic text badly in need of editing.
First & second editions of this text have long been considered standards in the land surveying profession, but I was disappointed with this (the 3rd) edition. The material is all there, but badly in need of a careful editor. Errors in punctuation and typography were frequent enough to be a real distraction. I found myself pencilling corrections in the margins as I read! For instance, long quotations, not set with a change of fonts, or even quotation marks, made for difficult interpretation. I had the distinct impression that certain chapters were revised in a hurry, and that perhaps each author thought the other was checking the work. In at least one chapter, it appeared that two different authors took a stab at addressing a single subject and both were included in the book although in DRAFT form! The authors also need to update discussions of measurement methodologies to include electronic total stations, data collectors and GPS. Though I'm not a real big adv! ocate of gender-neutral writing, the next edition should totally expunge the term "title men", which must appear 15 times.

Despite these drawbacks, the text remains a handy reference, and will probably remain a standard for some time. Hopefully the 4th Edition will be more carefully revised and edited.

The Serial Killers: a Study in the Psychology of Violence
Published in Hardcover by Virgin Books (15 November, 1990)
Authors: Colin Wilson and Donald Seaman
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A mediocre and dirty read
Want to know more about serial killers, sex crimes, mutiliations and torture? Are you the kind of person who buy Serial Killer weekly (Issue #1 with free collectors binder and piano wire) and feel that the dark side of humanity is a subject worth exploring, that serial killers are actually quite intelligent, Nietzchean supermen? Well this book is for you!

Otherwise, stay away. Not even useful for research, this exploitive little tome graphically details all kinds of sexual violence against women that seems to be there for cheap titillation. Its the kind of book you'll see on the supermarket book rack next to 'The History of Canabalism!', 'Great Paedophiles of our Time' and 'The Vannesa Feltz Story'.

Written with some co-operation with members of the FBI Behavioural Science Unit, this book was published with the sudden interest in serial killers during the release of Silence Of The Lambs. A film that romantises and perpetuates the myth of the serial killer as a man above all others. Wilson and Seaman examine cases of killers who try and do just that. Maybe their intention was to demystify this particular myth but what we get is just graphic accounts of murder and sexual violence that verges on pornography. The kind of book that would grace the shelf of some smug armchair amatuer psychologist whose never faced true violence. Colin Wilson has written some interesting books but this isn't one of them.

...................
Yes, there are some graphic depictions of violence in this book. It is also insightful in two keys areas of human interaction, domination and personal/sexual inadequacy, particularly in regard to men needing or wanting to have control over women and their own lives. Wilson details how many must resort to violence to "prove" themselves superior and gives credible, psychological reasons for their actions.

An Encyclopaedia of Murder
Just what it claims to be, there is not much to this book. It is a catalog of a large number of murders, most of which are not particularly unusual or interesting. I found it rather dull, but it's OK if you like cheap thrills.

New hampshire Fishing Maps
A so-so reference book. The maps can be inaccurate when it comes to location of ramps and roads. The text is good but the updated version varies little from the orginal. A good book for the price, but there are better ones out there, ie. Clark's fishing guide.
