Poems For Cat Lovers
Jean Chapman did an excellent job of compiling a diverse collection of cat poems in Cat Will Rhyme With Hat. From Ogden Nash to William Wordsworth, from silly to stoic, every imaginable cat poem is in the book. I love cats and I love the poems, so I'd have to give the TEXT a five star rating.

The illustrations in the book are beautiful line drawings by Peter Parnall. The book is divided into chapters and each chapter opens with one of Parnall's illustrations. In my opinion, there are too few Parnall drawings. The prominent Parnall illustration on the dust jacket seems to promise more illustrations than there are in the book. The lack of illustrations drops my rating below a five.

The book is currently out of print, but tracking down a copy of this cute kitty book should be much easier than stalking sparrows on the front lawn.

A tribute to a dying tribe
This book by French author Jean Raspail follows his tradition of writing about small and disappearing civilizations. There's something magical about this people of extreme south Argentina (Cap Horn), who after milleniums of struggle against a difficult nature, succumb to western invasion. When you read this beautiful story, you end up wondering how many treasures and how many great civilizations died.

Healthy, Delicious Eating
This is a very usable, healthy eating book, without a lot of ingredients that we never heard of. The contents include snacks, soups, salads, meat and poultry, seafood, vegetarian and side dishes and desserts. I like to cook low fat, healthy meals, and this book had many recipes that my four children will eat without a complaint. I borrowed the book from a friend to copy a recipe, and realized that I had to just go and buy the book!

John Calvin and the Will: A Critique and Corrective

Tedious and Misguided
This book has 4 sections:

1. Overview of theories of the will: intellectualist vs. voluntarist. 2. Critique of Calvin's view of the pre-Fall will. 3. Critique of Calvin's view of the post-Fall will. 4. Hoitenga's remedy to the problems in Calvin's thought.

Hoitenga's exposition and critique is fundamentally flawed in two ways:

First, it is very tedious reading. If you are an insomniac, this will do the trick.

Second, it betrays an almost complete unfamiliarity with more developed and nuanced expressions of Reformed theology. For example, Hoitenga critiques Calvin as if Calvin were a Scholastic philosopher making subtle distinctions. But Calvin was more of a churchman, a polemicist, an agenda setter, not a professional philosopher.

Because Hoitenga does not interact with Jonathan Edwards (this is a huge lacuna in the work), John Murray, Gordon Clark, or any other of a myriad of Reformed theologian/philosophers, he is left criticizing a nascent form of Reformed theology -- that of John Calvin.

Hoitenga also fails to realize that Reformed anthropology is not autonomous, it is dependent upon theology proper. It is driven by the desire to glorify God.

This book will be of interest to you only if you are a major Calvin buff or if you are interested in Reformed Epistemology (Hoitenga includes an appendix with the implications of his view on Reformed Epistemology).

Otherwise, this is a waste of time.
