I like this book, but thought $325 was a bit steep
I particularly enjoyed using this book as an offensive weapon, but feel that for $325 I could have bought a much more effective automatic shotgun which would have served my purposes as a terrorist better.
A book that should be used as gold standard.
After noticing the book among others in the series on the shelves of the medical library, I checked it out and found it a very good reference. The authors clearly know their field and the writing is clear and concise, as this type of publication should be. It is a must have book for scientists and scholars, as well as practitioners. Considering the obvious involvement of at least one large multinational drug company in the book, one would think that that it would be a sponsored publication so that "normal" practitioners and scientists could actually purchase it for their own reference library!

Yeah, I got snookered
I was very surprised when I ordered this book and found out that yes, indeed, it was merely a very tiny portion of what I had expected. I suppose I should have known from the price, but the description (at least at that time) did not make it clear that it wasn't the entire dictionary.
Must have more complete info before ordering...
While this may be a very thorough source for the words it covers, it should be noted in the basic information that this is ONLY 128 pages of a 15,000 page work. The description above is very misleading.

Applied.NOT
This book's title is misleading, as it appears to feed off the familiarity with the Applied Programming series of books from Microsoft Press. It is truly a mixed-bag, as the above editorial review admits. After expounding on the 'revolutionary' idea that software should be people oriented, it dives into pages of code that lays out an Asp.Net application. It then sandwiches in a C# fundamentals tour, and then dives right into more code. If there is a purpose to this book, I couldn't distill it. It truly appears as if each author wrote their portion of their book without talking to the other, and then the editor mashed them together the night before the deadline hit.
Different type of book
If you have kept up with the .NET revolution, you have no doubt seen and read a lot of books on .NET and the .NET languages. Most of the books on C# deal with the basics of syntax with a couple of small samples applications. Very few, however, deal with any sort of real world situations.
While this book does cover a few of the basics, it is more focused on the people aspect. I feel this is an important, often overlooked, aspect of software development and the fact that it is overlooked is why so much software is hard to use.
If you are looking for a best practices book, this tome is not quite there. The same goes for a book strong on code. While you can use the CD to look at a good amount of sample code, the book is rather thin. This is not, however, the focus of the book; and, since so many other books cover this, the niche filled here is rather nice.
If I had to pick the proper audience for this book, there would be two categories: 1) Anyone who has ever had a piece of software fail as the end-users never bought in, and 2) anyone who wants to ensure this never happens. While it is not an excellent book, I have to laud the publisher for taking a chance on this subject matter selling. I hope it does.

This is not the textbook.
We thought we had ordered the textbook, Microeconomics: Principles, Problems, and Policies by McConnell and Brue. This book however is Selected Material from Microeconomics. The Table of Contents is the same as the textbook, so this is really confusing. Be sure you get what you want.
I love this textbook!
Microeconomics by McConnell and Brue is a great text book. The explanation is very clear. I especially like the way they explain the graphs and concepts. It's very easy to understand. They give very good examples in each chapter. I use it for my class and I found the reading is very enjoyable. This textbook is definitely good for people who want to do self-study of microeconomics.

Why so large?
I am a University of Minnesoota student and we use this text for our introductory Human Anatomy course. (Unfortunately they came out with a new edition and I couldn't sell it back to the bookstore.) Strictly in terms of the content this book was average because I often needed more information on certain aspects of the human anatomy. My real frustration was due to the fact that I feel the publisher should have supplied a carrying case specifically designed to carry such a large, awkward book. I realize that the size contributed to larger pictures but I feel it was a bit overboard! Finally, as I mentioned before, a new edition came out very recently. The new book resembles the previous edition too much. It's unfortunate we live in such a capitalistic society as to allow such a situation to take place..

RE: Looking for Answers
I am a hich school junior and use the unabridged version of this textbook in my A.P. U.S. History class. Since my school's Advanced Placement courses use college texts, I assume America Past and Present is also used in undergraduate history classes. (I had to rate this book to post this "review." Please do not consider my rating if you are trying to assess this book.)
Excellent!
The authors do an excellent job of covering American history. Highly readable, comprehensible, with interesting special essays in each chapter. My only complaint is a lack of study aids or chapter summaries. Also available in two briefer editions, covering American history through 1865 in the first and after 1865 in the second.
Good Book
This makes an excellent undergraduate textbook in US history -- also good just for a general read.

Definitely NOT what I expected
Having read several books on rape in the past year, I was ready for something deeper, more powerful, perhaps even a bit tougher to read. I purchased this book of poetry thinking that I would find what I was searching for. How very wrong I was. This thin book of poetry is definitely NOT worth the price. It was tough to read at certain points due to it's obviously graphic nature, but I did not find myself riveted to reading it...other than the fact that I felt I had to because I had paid so much for it. I do not recommend this book for rape survivors. It is not worth your time or your money.
Powerful
I thought that the idea of allowing rape survivors a channel in which to express their anger, fear, and sense of hope via poetry was very original. Yes, there are a number of books on rape, but usually they are not an anthology of survivors being allowed to be totally free in their expression. I thought the book was deep, and worth every penny. I highly recommend anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault to get this book and RELATE to the women between the covers.

Not What I Expected
Granted, I was fooled. I had hoped this book would be a collection of Utah produced fine art. Instead it is mostly a listing of Utah's artists, interspersed with a disappointingly small number of examples of their work. The major figures in Utah art do get larger bios (at least some of them), but many of the "bios" are little more than one sentence long. Apparently, every kid who ever scribbed on his schooldesk is included here, too.

How did this get past the proofreaders??
I picked this up in a bookstore for my English Composition CLEP test, and got through four pages, finding three typographical errors in the example questions--before I realized that they were unintentional. Unacceptable, for sure.
There are too many typographical errors in this book
This book has too many typographical errors. I used 3 books,Cracking the Clep(Princeton),Clep English composition(Comex),and Barrons. The first two are GREAT books that provide the background(nuts and bolts)needed to pass the english test. Barrons has plenty of sample questions, but lacks english grammar review material. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
Don't waste your money, I'm returning mine to the store
I bought this book as an impulse at a book store, wanting to CLEP the English Composition exam. Unfortunatly, this book is riddled with technical errors throughout. I took the initial exam, missing several questions like I suspected. But the reason I missed some of the questions was because the answers were wrong. At page 62, I had seen enough errors to make me want to return this book. Don't buy it, try something else.
