Whether you have children or not Buy this book. If you have children read them the landscape poetry in here. They will sing them in their sleep. It will take them on magical journeys to happy places and you also.

I just started browsing through a book of his poems in spanish one day and loved them, but my spanish is marginal. This has the spanish poems side by side with english translations, many of which I don't really like because they do things like switch words and lines and take a little too much freedom and change the spirit of the poem, but that's okay. You can read the spanish, read the english, and see exactly what has been changed, but the beauty is in the spanish ones, and though his vocabulary is large, yours doesn't really have to be to appreciate the sound and sight of these poems in spanish. I love many of the sonnets, plus the king of harlem, which reminds me of HCE from Finnegans Wake, this character that becomes the landscape itself, "after walking", and many others from the poet in new york. I've just been getting into some spanish poets after reading some st john of the cross and seeing what types of flows and life can be infused into words in this language, and these dark, bloody grimy oozes of language have had me high for weeks.

Brilliant, emotions of positive and negative are tasted in this work

This is the long awaited basic textbook for osteopathic medicine. It is surprisingly complete, covering philosophy, history, research, and manipulative techniques. The beginning osteopathic student may find it most useful for its practical discussion on the techniques--high velocity, myofascial release, etc. I believe it is also helpful in standardizing our terminology, which will make it easier when taking board exams or talking with colleagues from other osteopathic schools. It includes contributors well known within the osteopathic community, including Michael and William Kuchera, Melicien Tettambel, Eileen DiGiovanna, and many others. As a family practice resident I frequently turn to this textbook first when I want to know more about how to treat a patient or when preparing lectures for students and housestaff.

This text is actually required reading for most if not all osteopathic medical students. It is a 'textbook', however, and hence completely (sometimes exhaustively!) comprehensive. But it is easy to read so that anyone with an interest in OMT will get a methodic how-to for myriad techniques, also a thorough history of osteopathic medicine to boot! One of my OMT professors at the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine wrote or co-wrote a few of the chapters so of course, I think those are the best! If you are looking for an educational approach to learning manipulation and the reasons behind it, this is a valuable resouce.

Excellent sea adventure in the vane of Dana and Jack London's Sea Wolf. Light reading (some archaic terms). lots of action/adventure. Good kids book. Not PC at all. Lots of blood and gore. You know, real life stuff.

This book is full to the brim---a Leprechaun's pot of gold, if you can just catch the Leprechaun! If you like writing contests you will find many here that will appeal to you, and the sooner you get started the better you will do! It is, of course, a given, that often entering writing contests puts one at a disadvantage in some cases, where the prizes are large and professionals are more apt to throw in their shining entries; however, here we have so many with such a variety of prizes that anyone with any ability whatsoever should be able to win in one or more of the contests. The variety of possibilities is an aid, as well; from the short poem or brief essay to the novel, a niche may be found for one's work. The descriptions of the entry requirements are clear and easily understandable, and the closing dates well marked. The helpful hints included are a boon to veteran contesters as well as newbies, and I would suggest a thorough study of these before putting quill to parchment, as it were. I heartily recommend this illustrious collection of contests for all, and it is a welcome entrant into the lists of contests, of which there are all too few at this point in time. Let us hope it becomes an annual directory.

I never knew my grandfather as he died the year before I was born. I used to play in the attic of my home. I played with grandfathers uniform and sword,his musket and many of his personal belongings. Seeing as how this is my grandfather it makes the book seem more real to me than if it were written about someone that I never heard of.

This book is very well written and very informative. All of the lessons are supported by excellent visual material. Granted, one needs to order whichever book is required by his or her college, but as far as chemistry books go this one is wonderful.

I truly enjoyed the conversational style used by Lt. Simmons. He defines military jargon when he uses it in the book. It saddens me to see how unfairly people are treated simply because of color. I had naively thought that we had grown as a nation. This book is a "must read" for those who find war glamorous. There is certainly nothing glamorous about vomiting after training in a gas chamber. As a child of a World War II and Vietnam War Veteran, I have gained insight into some of the situations my father must have witnessed during his thirty years in the military. I look forward to reading more by this talented author. I thank him for serving this country of ours, and I thank him for sharing his military experiences with his readers.

You know you are in the company of a great writer when the very first page of a book wrenches your heart. With such an auspicious start, William Taylor begins his moving account of teenage Marco coming to terms with the loss of his life-long friend, Jerome, in an apparent hunting accident. He writes to Jerome's former 'girlfriend' Kate and their correspondence comprises most of this little book. He deals with his great loss, his loneliness, drinking, and the realization that Kate is gay. Then Marco must deal with Jerome's true nature and, finally, his feelings for his lost friend.

There are many heart-rending moments in the unfolding of his wonderful tale, and Mr. Taylor leaves us with hope for these wonderful kids, with their gaining of healing knowledge, and humanity.

This short novella explores the reactions of two friends (Marco and Kate) to the apparent suicide of another friend (Jerome). Through an exchange of letters and e-mails, the truth of their respective relationship with the deceased (Jerome of the title) becomes clear.

Slowly, Marco and Kate reveal their own personalities anf this proves to be a very shocking for Marco.

The book is very well put together, the story is moving and thought provoking. It's not a long read; I managed it in under an hour, but it IS a deep read.

When Jerome dies, his two best friends, Marco and Katie, try to commiserate each other. To do so they have to fall back on the Internet, since one of them is in the US and the other in NZ. As the email messages fly back and forth half way around the world, the two unlikely friends find out more and more about each other and about themselves.

If Jerome hadn't died, however, Marco might never have found a way to come to terms with himself and honor his friend in the process. In this, the book reflects real life. The list is long of people who have had to die before their friends and family came to grow into reason. And still, parents turns their sons onto the streets, or one-time pals harrass and abuse former friends.

Still, this book is does not sink into self-indulgence. The dialogue carried on between the two survivors leads them out of sorrow into the light of self-awareness. For this reason, it is a valuable resource for any young person. It shows a way to reach understanding without throwing in the towel. It can prepare young people and adults to face the unimaginable together.

Jerome can speak to us all.

Kentucky Woman certainly seems to epitomize Roosevelt's famous quote. This book is so historically real that you sweat when reading about the summer days. I couldn't help but appreciate my carefree world compared to Viebie's and many times wondered just how many of my relatives she may have known due to geography and time. I enjoyed reading about a true Kentucky woman and the strength that she possessed. So many people today are so self-absorbed that life's lessons are lost but we could all learn something from Viebie.

Kentucky Woman, by Mary Ellen Klatte, really touched me. The book shares the life story of a strong, loving woman in a challenging time. It stirred up memories of my Grandmother, a kentucky woman born just 4 years before Viebie and from a nearby place. References to such things as apple butter, custard pie and sun-bonnet girl quilts brought back vivid scenes from my childhood experiences with my Grandmother. Even the slang terms made me smile as I remembered my Grandmother calling me "fleshy" when I put on a few pounds. Viebie's life is a testament to determination, love and making the most of your life. I highly recommend this book. It is a love story but also a keen reminder of another time and place, so different from today.

Although I thouhgi that I would only read a few pages, I was captivated by this book and didn't put it down until I finished it. Her picture on the back cover of the book reflects much of the great humor, pride, and positive nature of this fine woman. It was with great interst that I read of her life, and as a historian I am always interested to read and reflect on the lives of people who have made a contribution to their country and their community. So often people are only interested in the biography of the rich and famous, and they tend to forget the dogged hard work, perserverance and love that comes from the so called "common folks." Certainly Viebie was not the common folks, for within her determination and self sacrifice without complaint we see the real family values and real profiles in courage. Our young folks tend to think that all the modern conveniences have always been in the United States. They tend to forget that much of America was small and provincial and that gratification and desires were not instantly met and that great sacrifice was often the life of many before us. The life of Viebie Catron Cantrell is inspirational, in that it tells us of the spirit of a well reflected life, in her hopes and dreams of her community and her family told in letters and sweet poetry. We see here the small trials and tribulations of a young woman undergoing her daily tasks of getting an education, teaching, experiencing the hopes and despairs of everyday life, and seeing through her eyes the hard times of the 1930's, and her special courtship through her letters and reflections. Many of the colloquial expressions are also very interesting. This book is a fast and fun account of a proud woman and her family, and it was a joy to read despite the sad times that were met with this uncomplaining God fearing woman.

The Norton Anthology of American literature is a great collection of the most prominent and prolific authors in this young nation's history. The Anthology covers the development of authors in the new world, from the early native American folk tales to the works of Toni Morrison and Allen Ginsberg. The anthology spans poetry and prose and gives the reader a great cross sectional view of American society and its problems. The presence of Native American, Black and Hispanic authors presents a complete line up of works of literature, presented in a pleasant chronological order and introduced by a brief and interesting description of the author's life and works. The introductory description of each author facilitates the contextual placement of the text and its comprehension. The anthology contains several novels such as "Howl", "Sula" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". The presence of these complete works makes the anthology more complete, as they are an important part of the American literary tradition. The selection of authors and of their works is a good one, but presents some flaws. Obviously not being able to include all relevant authors in the American literary tradition, the editors selected a large number of authors, and their most important works. Nonetheless several important texts seem to be missing. Texts by less prolific authors, such as the great new classic "To kill a mockingbird" are missing. Although the anthology gives the reader an introduction on the author and his works it does not stimulate sufficiently through interesting points to be discussed and questions which shed light on hidden or obscure aspects of the texts. The anthology is a great tool for any class, or for the passionate reader. It is ideal if accompanied by a class or group/club in which the texts are discussed.

The Norton anthology is the definitive collection of American literature. Its selections range from the letters of Christopher Columbus to quintessential American works like Whitman's "Song of Myself" and inherently American movements such as beat poetry. The collection offers a wide spread selection of works, some of which fall outside of your typical definition of "literature." All, however, have been important parts of our artistic tradition and provide literary examples of the coming of age of America. Literature has truly helped to define the American identity. This book is a history lesson, a journey through some of the most beautiful poetry and prose ever written and a testament to the kind of intelligent, passionate people that have formed our country.

To anyone seeking an encompassing overview of American literature, here is your book. This, the latest edition of the Norton Anthology, not only makes for months of good reading but also acts as a good primer for further pursuits in American letters (academic and otherwise.) Besides the countless number of excellent selections, eleven works appear in their entirety. Among them, Twain's Huckleberry Finn, Whitman's "Song of Myself," and Ginsburg's "Howl."

The anthology also contains several new additions - most notably an intriguing section of Native American trickster tales that provides an interesting counter to Chris Columbus' over-zealous ramblings. As for more contemporary writing, I was pleasantly surprised at the number of deserving writers and poets newly anthologized in this revision: Toni Morrison, Raymond Carver, and Sandra Cisneros just to name a few.

Yet what makes this anthology truly successful is the breadth and depth of the text as a whole. The selections, the organization, the well-written bits of biographical information... IT ALL FITS PERFECTLY! No doubt other readers will find this anthology as informative, provocative and enjoyable as I do. A definite keeper for my permanent collection.
