William Hazlitt: The Plain Speaker: The Key Essays
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Publishers (1999)
Authors: Hazlitt William, Duncan Wu, William Hazlitt, Tom Paulin, and Ducan Wu
Amazon base price: $28.95
Average review score:

Tom Paulin speaks - addendum
He said this (as of course is his right), just a couple of days before 4 people were killed in their beds in West Bank, including a 5-year-old. Obviously, this has no relation to his criticism.

Why Paulin Loves Hazlitt
One of the great quotes from Hazlitt says that if something isn't controversial, it isn't interesting. Paulin hates the Brooklyn born land-grabbers because he sees in them the same bigotry and fanaticism that he saw in his fellow Protestants growing up in Belfast. He resents the fact that they are using the bible as a real estate development manual and he resents the notion that some clown from New York can simply get off a plane and claim land that has belonged to local families for generations. As this volume shows, Hazlitt dedicated his life to sparking thought and piercing the pieties of the self righteous. A knitted yarlmuke does not entitle one to the keys to the kingdom. I'm sure Hazlitt (and Paulin!) wouldn't really want them shot; but they would surely wish for them a ticket back to Bensonhurst.

A review of the actual book
Hazlitt is one of the greatest writers of English prose. The Plain Speaker is an essential book and Blackwells have done our culture a service by re-issuing it.

Duncan Wu is a highly-regarded scholar of romanticism. Therefore one can totally rely on the integrity of the text.

Tom Paulin is a foremost authority on Hazlitt and his book The Day-Star of Liberty is also, incidentally, one of the most stimulating books on Edmund Burke of recent times.

Hazlitt's work, sadly, has become obscure even to well-educated readers. It is most regrettable that a 'reviewer' abuses this public platform to mug this fine edition because he is angry at Paulin's intemperate views on Israel. Giving a one-star rating to a great work by one of the finest writers in world literature is surely an inappropriate response.

Veterinary Pathology
Published in Hardcover by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (15 January, 1997)
Authors: Thomas Carlyle Jones, Ronald Duncan Hunt, Norval William King, and Carlyle Jones
Amazon base price: $99.95
Average review score:

A good book for some
I would recommend this book to some students of veterinary science and veterinary pathology, but it is hard to keep pace with such a rapidly changing field - and in some sections, this book hasn't even tried. Glaring errors and out of date references are present in some sections (e.g. the section on Swine Influenza does not mention the zoonotic potential of the virus or its presence in avian species). Other sections contain information and figures which are hard to obtain elsewhere. Use this book - but with caution.

Current sophomore in vet school
i agree with what one of the reviewers above wrote, that the book does have some material that is lacking or outdated, however, i am currently in pathology 2 at my vet school, and i have found that this book does a very good job of explaining the various diseases and conditions (esp. the more common ones) in a way that makes it a little easier to comprehend, and supports and clarifies my professors notes greatly. i also found it useful when i was in pathology 1 with its explanations of inflammation, necrosis and neoplasms. it is rather large but i have found it useful for school, and most likely good to have around in practice as a resource. i recommend this book to students that are about to take pathology courses in vet medicine.

A good book for references
I would like to recommend this book to any vet students who wish to buy this book. This book may be a little heavy to carry around but the it's good as a back-up reference book. The explanation on the topic of inflammation and neoplasia is good and to the point. On inflammation, it's divided to the groups of inflammation and and in the topic of neoplasia differentiates benign and malignant tumours very detail. I like this this.

A good product hampered by substandard quality control.
If you intend to solely use this book to prepare for the VB5 exam, DON'T. Since the book assumes that you have prior know how of the VB and it's underlying technologies, I suggest that you use this book together with the VB help and Online Book. One thing I like is the way the book was organized. The topics were divided just as it was stated in the MS website. The accompanying CD was a big let down. The more I take the practice exam, the less it makes me feel of my chances. I never scored beyond 800. There was a lot of mistakes in the practice exam. What you can do is either double check all your answers that was marked as incorrect or use a different practice test like the one from Trancenders.

To summarize, the book will provide you with enough information for your review as long as you use it with the product itself together with the VB help and the Online book.

Good, but errors and typo's reduces its effectiveness.
Studied and relied on this book. Studied 'Exam Cram' for about 15 hours after I started scoring 90% on practice test in this book. ExamCram had good additional hints and tips. Exam Cram practice tests are harder, and has some material not covered in this book. However, this book has better explination of the material covered.

VB5 was my first certification test and I passed on my first try.

Good book with cool computer graded practice test.
The best thing about this book is the CD that comes with it. The computer graded test are great and help you locate your trouble areas. It's not going to show the exact questions that will be on your particular test (i.e. cheat). The practice exams (and flashcard test)will test your readiness to take the MCSD Visual Basic 5 certification exam offered by ICCP. Even if your not going to take the test the book and computer aided testing software give all Visual Basic programmers strict coding guidlines. You won't just learn how to pass the test you'll also learn good coding techniques. I wouldn't rely solely on just this book as your only source/means to pass the test, you'll have to work very hard to become certified in any worthwhile field. If more books came with test like these you can mark me down as a potential buyer.

The Devil and Mr Duncan
Published in Hardcover by Sono Nis Pr (1985)
Author: Peter Murray
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

Murray uses only selected facts to back his conclusions.
Studies of cultural conflict between native americans and white europeans always create a sense of tension among white historians. Such is the case with Peter Murray's work on Anglican missionary William Duncan. Given that the study of Duncan has gone through various metamorpheses, from early hagiographies by authors such as Arctander and others,to William Gilbert Beattie's trashing of him in his biogrphy of Tsimshian missionary Edward Marsden; Murray may see himself as a revisionist who is correcting Beattie's errors. Unfortunately, Murray does not do much better than the early hagiographies in the sense of objectivity. When one examines Duncan's letters, one immediately grasps the conflicts and contradictions in his work. He was one of the earliest missionary pioneers on the northern Pacific Rim, yet he had a problem with power in that he wanted to retain control of his mission, without any interferance from either the Anglican church, with which he eventually broke, or the Tsimshians themselves. He never could grasp the fact that the Tsimshians had grown in his over fifty years of work to the point that they could reasonably control the destiny of their own church. Murray pays no attention to any of these facts, as he seeks to praise Duncan at the expense of Marsden, Presbyterian missionary Sheldon Jackson, and others. He presents much anecdotal evidence, but is always selective in his facts, which may be the greatest historiographical sin.
