Heartsearch: Toward Healing Lupus
As anyone with the painful orphan disease fibromyalgia knows, finding relief is a full-time job. Learning how others have dealt with chronic diseases is one path that can lead to relief, and I want to share my pleasure in finding Donna Hamil Talman's touching, informative book, "Heartsearch: Toward Healing Lupus." Believe me, this is not just for those unfortunate enough to have lupus. In fact, anyone who is struggling to overcome any adversity could benefit from it.

This book is the story of a courageous woman who faced a devastating disease and possible death with a determined, intelligent search for healing. She explored every path she could find, from meditation to diet, from massage to therapy, from acupuncture to prescribed medications, and she never backed down when the going got tough. She is an example for us all.

I couldn't help but recognize (and hopefully acknowledge) myself throughout the well-written narrative of her personal struggle, but the part of the book that I reread most is the appendix: Guide for a Self-Help Prescription. This section alone would make the book worth buying. It lays a foundation for healing that can save her readers years of research and painful struggle. I give this book an A+.

This guide is indispensable
Housing and travel availability changes almost day to day and it is difficult to write ahead to plan the move. This book and many versions before it have helped make those plans much easer.
The author has seen the in's and out's of travel from a practical stand point. She has written several books on this subject and related subjects including "Military Space-A Air Basic Training: And Reader Trip Reports" and a book that you will have to search to find written about her two years in Vietnam "Customs and Culture of Vietnam" which is very in-depth.

Dr. Brett rocks
I have to say, this book he wrote with his wife is as informative as his lectures.
While the events described in Murdered happened prior to the end of the Cold War, the story gives us pause-we really HAVE to start thinking about what our tax dollars are supporting-dictators and death squads are the same whether they are on the right or the left-to support them in the name of fighting communism or terrorism is immoral.

Great Book
I enjoy reading diaries of the pioneers and explorers of the American West and this book is one of the best I've read. After each diary entry the editor provides additional information to clarify. I especially enjoyed the appendix which provides a brief biography and a picture of each member of the expedition. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the old west.

A real life story Excellent and almost unbelievable.
This story could only happen to a dedicated lover of all creatures. A biology teacher with a passion for his work comes across a baby Prairy Dog. The mother was dead, so he takes it home and gives it the care necessary to keep it alive. When the baby was strong enough he took it to school and shared the experiences with his students. This tale is so fascinating that I was happy that it was a short story, because I couldnt put it down until I read the entire story. What a life this Prairie Dog led. Great story I recommend it to everyone, regardless of their age.

An essential guide for anyone facing life's challenges
When Dreams Don't Work is a most wonderful and essential guide for anyone facing life's challenges, sadness, and disappointment. The authors help us understand our very natural responses to burn out and most major perceived setbacks and dilemmas. I recommend this to every manager, investor, and thinking citizen, and to everyone entering the challenging stages of middle age and senior status. My only wish is that I had read this book during my college years, as its guidance is truly magnificent.

strong survivalist tale
In San Diego, thirteen-year-old Alexis Castille-Reed attends a pool party where the alcohol flows. An accident occurs, but fortunately no one dies. However, her upset mother "banishes" Alexis for the summer to live with her father in International Falls, Minnesota.

Alexis' dad is the authority on the bald eagles. Currently, he leads a study that is banding eaglets to gain research on their natural habitat. Alexis is put to work, but though she loves the birds, she remains angry with her father for deserting her. On a nearby island, Alexis climbs up a tree to remove a fish lure from an eagle's nest. However, when she lifts an eaglet out of the nest, she drops the bird. That error is compounded when she finds herself stranded on the island protecting the injured eaglet from nasty weather and a bear.

This is a wonderful preadolescent to young teen novel that focuses on Alexis, a person in trouble. She needs closure on her younger brother's death from cancer, but at first is not able to find a way to grieve without guilt for living and without alienating her parents also mourning in their own ways. Through the eaglet rescue, Alexis attains an understanding especially of her father whom she previously loathed as well as personal comfort. Though her parents talking with one another following their estrangement feels strained, WHEN EAGLES FALL is a strong survivalist tale that the young at heart will enjoy soaring with.

What would we do without it?
A must for editorial and/or stock photographers. A bible of contact information. A few photo buyers, like those who only buy one or two photos from freelancers a year, could be left out of the book.

Photographer's Market 2001
Photographer's Market is often refered to as the "Bible of stock photography" and this title actually fits quite well. This tremendeously valuable resource gives the photographer access to a wide market of photobuyers in all categories. Photographer's Market comes out with a new issue every year and there's always something new in every new issue. The latest one is no exception. Writer's Digest managed to find 480 new markets where photographers can sell their work in the 2001 edition. But, Photographer's Market is so much more than a mere listing of photobuyers. The book contains valuable information no photographer should be without. Things like information on names of people to contact at the various markets, how much the various photobuyers normally pay, what format they want submissions in as well as tips and hints. If you're only planning to invest in one photography book this year, do yourself a favor and make that book the 2001 edition of "Photographer's Market". Chances are you will get back the money you paid for the book faster than you can say "oups I didn't know that magazine had changed to accepting digital submissions this year..." For those of you out there who are thinking "I've been in this business for 20 years and know all there is to know", I must sadly inform you that you don't. New markets where photographers can offer, and sell, their images pops up all the time. One of the best ways to keep track of those markets is to make sure you get your yearly dose of Photographer's Market.

A must for every photographer wishing to sell his work
First time I have heard about this "Bible of stock photography" was 4 years ago. I was a keen photo-enthusiast wishing to find markets for his work, which after going through this book and using it become a reality. It took a lot of effort and patience to go through the all entries, then choose and address final "matches", but finally it paid off. I have started to buy the book every year and allways found it very useful. It is really topic and kept "up-to-date" every year and the one for 2002 is not an extemption. Should there be only one book I will keep buying every year I know it is going to be this one. I do recommend it.

Fascinating and frustrating
I read this book with no baggage - I don't know much about autism and don't know autictic people. I was simply interested in hearing about the disorder from the inside, so to speak.

I found her writing compelling. Her use of language is extraordinary - she seems to be bright and aware. And the narrative of her hideous home life as a child - and into her adult years as well - is the stuff of real tragedy.

But I was frustrated because I wanted to know WHY she did what she did, and I didn't feel that the book answered those questions. What drew her into her obsessive relationships, and why did she allow herself to drift into those manipulative and destructive sexual relationships? Lack of self-esteem doesn't tell the entire story - I wanted to know what was going through her mind when she allowed herself to be subjected again and again to pick-your-adjective abuse. There was a certain repetitiveness to her narrative, but it added heat, not light. Hence three stars.

In spite of that, I recommend this book to anyone with any interest at all in autism - Ms. Williams' willingness to expose the intimate details of her life inside her head is admirable and fascinating.

Nobody Nowhere
I am the grandparent of an autistic child and found this book so helpful I would recommend that it be made mandatory reading for all professionals who work with autistic persons. I would also strongly urge all others who have autistic persons in their lives to read it. The book has given me insight regarding my grandson's behavior and suggestions of ways to help him. Until experts and their research can provide explanations and perhaps cures for autism, the lived experience of an autistic person, such as Donna Williams provides in her books, is the best help available for those of us who care about and relate to an autistic person.

What it's REALLY like to be autistic
Wow! I have a son with high-functioning autism, so I read everything on the subject. I've read technical books, personal accounts and everything in-between. But NO book, before Nobody Nowhere, could tell me what it's really like to be autistic. Donna Williams has an amazing gift for writing and describing her experiences in living detail. I was so engrossed in this book; I could hardly put it down. Williams' is a haunting story, but one that now serves to help others. I am so grateful she wrote this book!
