Learning Edible Plants
This books shows, in an easy to understand format-in my opinion-a person how to identify wild edible plants that they can harvest (some even in their own backyard). It shows photos of the plants, tells you if there is a poisonous look alike plant, how to identify them, common locations of the plants, and how to prepare them for a meal. If someone wants to learn more about eating plants that grow in the wild, this book is the one I think should be in their library.

Great edible wild plant book; pictures, not drawings.
This book is a well-organized listing of edible wild plants in North America. Listings are by season, so you know when to look for a specific plant. Habitat is described including a quick reference range map of North America, as are how to harvest, prepare, and store foods for future use. A symbol key at the left of each plant will tell you at a glance what uses you can put a plant to; trail nibble, potherb, etc. Related edible and poisonous look alikes are also listed. This book utilizes pictures, something none of the other books I looked at did. I think this makes identification of plants much easier than relying on someone's black and white sketch or colored pencil rendering of something wild that I'm plan to eat. The one down side to this is that some of the pictures could be much better; about a dozen pictures are black and white, while others show the plant only at a distance which might make identification problematical. However, scientific names are provided, and if you have the luxury of time, you can do a search online for a more precise picture.

This is a book that all who play outdoors ought to have.
I bought this book to use to gather wild plants for making homemade wines, but now it's a companion whenever I go hiking, fishing, camping, or merely sightseeing. It's that valuable!

The book is divided into an introductory section, guides to harvesting plants in each of the four seasons, the plants themselves (also presented seasonally), poisonous plants, a nutritional guide, and two great indices. The introduction includes great tips on how to prepare wild foods as drinks, snacks, entres, and condiments, along with recipes for 25 jellies, 20 jams and 17 fruit and berry pies. But the good part is yet to come.

Each plant is presented with a good-to-excellent photograph, a distribution map (so a person in the Pacific Northwest doesn't have to wonder whether he or she is looking at a squashberry or a hobblebush berry), a complete description, identification of the edible parts, harvest and preparation notes, related species, and poisonous look-alikes (if any). The presentations are just excellent. My only complaint is that the book isn't twice as thick.

Whether you just want to be prepared for emergencies or you want to collect wild edibles for making jams, jellies, pies, and wine, this book is one of the only two you'll probably need. The other is a good regional guide, because with over 20,000 species of plants to choose from north of the Rio Grande alone, a guide to regional edibles is a must.

Celebratory and Detailed, But...
I don't want to take anything away from Peter Singer's celebration of Henry Spira's life or work in pursuit of animal rights. However, I would point out that this book is a development of Singer's essay on Spira's work in the earlier "In Defence of Animals" collection. From the perspective of pragmatic demonstration of beliefs and empirically verifiable harm, it is a good book. If Singer publishes a second edition, could he refer to any corroborative evidence that Spira used in more detail? I am not an animal rights activist, but I thought this provided a good description of practical activism

Amazing Book -- A must read for all activists!!
This book is truly amazing. It is a very exciting book to read, and the enthusiasm of Henry Spira can not help to rub off on your own life. Peter Singer has done an excellent job of giving the reader an easy to access look into the life of a man who inspired thousands of people to think more about all forms of suffering for all types of animals.

Thank you for such an amazing book! It is a must read for anyone involved in activism. It shares a lifetime of wisdom. Enjoy!

A Handbook for making a change in this world.
Peter Singer's "Ethics Into Action" is a must read for every activist -- no matter what your area of activism. Dr. Singer relates how one person, Henry Spira, made a difference for animals. We have all at one time or another pondered "how can I, one person, make a difference in this world?" Read how Henry Spira made a positive impact, again and again, and you will begin to believe that one person can perhaps make a change for the better, whatever one's cause may be. Henry Spira is truly an inspiration. It is ironic that Peter Singer who many years ago inspired and motivated Henry Spira to forge ahead in fighting for a good cause, now many years later writes a powerful, illuminating book on how Henry Spira did just that and instigated major changes for animals along the way, again and again . The path has never been easy, but this one man has moved some big stones going down the path. Henry has influenced society's view regarding animals at large and has had a major impact on how certain corporations treat and regard animals. Whether one agrees with his philosophy or not, one cannot but admire Henry for going down this difficult route and making changes for the better along the way. Whatever your cause, Henry's story will change how you think and what you think. You will believe that you too, one person, can make a difference, whatever your cause. Read the book...make a difference. Push the peanut forward.

A sad and compelling book
Having been introduced to his work at a gallery exhibit in New York, I bought this book which contains pretty much the same sad pictures. Really an amazing point of view of wildlife in Africa, might shock some with graphic pictures of carcasses, particularly one of a zebra with its hide stripped off. What I cannot figure out ultimately is where Peter Beard stands on the issue - although the big message appears to me that he opposes the killings, which is why he films the hideousness of it all, he seems to have personally participated in the hunts that he photographs, killing the same animals. He is very elusive about his personal viewpoint, seems kind of snobbish to me.

Very moving for the non-ignorant
If you are looking for a happy picture book, in which you can see your favorite animals roaming the great landscape in majestic awe, then this is not the book for you. Beard delivers to us a very moving plea for the endangered African wildlife.

Yes, a number of the pictures are of dead animals, slaughtered for their tusks, hides or other prized body parts. The book is a morbid account of humankind's killing of these beautiful animals, not just their exploitation by the Africans or Indians.

Although the photographs alone tell a powerful tale, the text should by no means be ignored. Beard included powerful quotes, and detailed accounts of the "end of the game."

Excellent book, if you are looking for reality and are aware enough to know what to expect.

Old Africa brought to life
An excellent book for those that can handle the truth. It shows what will happen when nature is left to manage itself and what happens when men don't control themselves. It's about hard times and history-a way of life long forgotten. If you are a product of the spoonfed Disney age, then you'll find this book shocking. It may well be your first taste of truth about wild animals, wild places, and the true spirit of man. This book is about Old Africa and should not be judged with today's politically correct eye. It is an account of things happened in a forgotten time, and a lost way of life.

Simba Science
Early explorers of the dark continent described Africa as a land "boiling with oppurtunities." Upon this conclusion they further remarked "what a pity." Kittenberger came to Africa as a explorer in search of wild game specimens for the Hungerian Natural History Museum and to document the native people and culture. What he discovered was a uniqueness, a land radiating of genuine nature, and land that needed to be perserved for the future. In his book he describes this land, its people and game, its culture, and the very aura that stays in a individuals soul calling them back, to the upmost detail.

Kittenberger was on a scientific exploration and yes his book is deemed a scientific novel. But as great as he was a scientist, he was an even greater writer. The scientific data, experimentation, and jargon are blended throughout with anecdotes from his diary and accounts of adventure. The book flows smoothly, with adeaqute explanations accompaning anything that may cause confusion. The author provides vivid detail, and the reader, upon completion, is left with a new found knowledge of Africa. Several unique observations were made by Kittenberger, along with many extraordinary scientific breakthroughs. By incorperating these into the novel interest is maintained and a vibrate zest dances through the pages.

Kittenberger gives the reader a accurate account of Africa through the text. The reader sometimes finds himself in a daydreaming esctasy surrounded by Africa. You can hear the lion roar, smell the campfire, and see the sunsets. Upon conclusion a little piece of Africa occupies the reader's soul calling them there.

Just like I was there
For any one who is really interested in Africa this is a good read. It is not the usual safari book written about the glorious hunts of a "Great White Hunter." This is a book by a man who literally made a large part of his life in the wilds of Africa hunting and collecting all forms of wildlife. The sheer humility of Kalman's writing makes you fell as if you were setting around a campfire after the hunt discussing it leisurely. There is nothing overblown or braggert about the man. I did get a little bored with some of the detail he went into on the smaller animals and birds, however it is just this attention to detail that makes him so worthwhile to read. Overall I found this book to be both entertaining and informative.

Very good collection of tales
A good book to keep by the bed to help you fall asleep with images of a time that is gone forever.

Not to be confused with a history book written by any one person, A Rendezvous reader is a collection of selections from journal entries, newspaper articles and books, most only a page or two long, that show the culture and folklore of the mountain men and the beautifully wild world in which they lived. It describes everything from trapping techniques, encounters with grizzlies, descriptions of giant heards of buffalo, bloody fights with blackfeet, common and uncommon sources of food, surgery on the trail, beggers, weapons, river crossings, whisky, everything you might ever want to know about rendevous, why many were motivated to let out for the mountains in the first place and so much more.

The selections in this book offer the sights and sounds, smells and tastes of yonder mountains which makes worthwhile reading.

This is one entertaining read!
;) For any history and folklore affectionado, like myself, this book is made to order! The writing style is smooth and draws you right into the stories!

Delightful, fresh, clean and crisp --
With the 'old-fashioned' names included in this novel, such as 'Peter', 'Mary' and even 'Percival' -- I was expecting to be bored to tears! Instead I was delightfully caught up in this tale of intrigue and even learned a bit about fine art. I must now go and find Dr. Schieles' first mystery "Under Cover of Night" -- I understand he has a forthcoming novel, "Deceptive Appearances" due out soon -- further tales of my new heroes Peter and Mary!

The Suburban Wild by P.Friederici
It was a real pleasure to read this slim volume of essays by Peter Friederici. The poetic style in describing his impressions while walking through the woods of Suburbia or while reminiscing about his childhood makes one relaxed and feeling good. His background of a naturalist makes some other essays very interesting and enlightening. I recommend this little gem to every suburbanite who likes to read, sitting in an armchair close to the window, occasionally peering out at the birds and the squirrels by the feeder, savoring the words of pleasant and knowledgable poet.
