The photos presented here were taken by Francis Firth a Derbyshire photographer who travelled to Egypt and the middle east a number of times in the 1850's and 60's and recorded what he saw with these fantastic photographs.

The photos are all clear, beautiful shots, like the best of 19th century photography. You get to see views like The Pyramids of Giza and Dahshur, the temples of Dendera, Karnak, Luxor, Thebes and Edfu all buried in sand or in their "original" ruined 19th century state. In addition to the wonderful parade of Egyptian photos there are also scenes from Jerusalem, Gaza, the dead sea and Baalbek in Lebanon.

This is a wonderful book that takes you on a visual trip to the past. Recommended for anyone interested in Egypt or 19th century photography.

I choose this book because of many reasons. First, I read this book because of your requirement to read this book and write a book for it. Second, I was a big fan of the movie "The Mummy" and it's sequel, "The Mummy Returns" and wanted to know if there really is a person called Imhotep. Finally, I read this book wanting to know how the Egyptain way of life was. These are the reasons why this book was chosen.
My favorite part of this book was when they told me how they learn math and how to pronouce words in Egyptian language. What researchers have found out was that Egyptians lacked pronoucing vowels and link-words in their language. So if you said "The ball is in the house", the Egyptians would say it like "Th bll s n th hse". And in math, they would write 25,025 like 10,000 +10,000+10+10+1+1+1+1+1. These ideas have given us knowledge like how to write a number in expanded form(like the sentence above. The Egyptians have helped us contribute information to expand our knowledge of our world.

Well this is a very good book on just what it claims to be...life in ancient Egypt. It admittedly isn't a very detailed in depth history or anything like that, but what it does do and do well is compile in one book a great deal of information which then taken as a whole indeed does a top notch jib of letting you the modern reader avtually understand what the ancient Egyptian lived like and thought. I highly recommed it to all those interested in such things. It will do as stated.

This is an informative and comprehensive introduction to Egyptology. Starting with an analysis of the Nile and how this majestic river is pivotal to understanding this ancient culture, White brings us through a descriptive tour of each of the important contributors to Ancient Egyptian culture; the Pharoh, the Priest, the Architect, the Craftsman and the commonly disregarded peasant. This book, albeit occasionally too factual, has a wealth of information included in its mere 200 pages. The three historical chapters are a welcome synthesis to all of the factual data that was presented earlier. The fold-out summary of the major Pharohs, architectural advances and other contemporary cultures is great for keeping all of the important dates, places and people straight. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the wonders of Egypt.
