There is always a "but" ...
I've bought this book because I thought it was a selection Robert Capa had made himself, but it is a posthumous work, giving an impression of what may be overlooked in other books - the photographs of children Robert Capa has made. So you have a stunning collection, every picture fine and well worth viewing, but, and this is what is for me personally a little bit disappointing, the circumstances of the pictures are somewhat to miss. So take this book if you can get it and take the other books of Robert Capa with it to make the picture a whole one - and because I'm a "fan" I recommend to get every book of Robert Capa - you will see it will fit. It is a piece of the mosaic of Robert Capa's life.

Just the right amount of depth and breadth...
Mr. Whelan succeeds in describing the important aspects of the Korean War without succumbing to the usual bug-a-boo of war books - losing the non-military reader in an avalanche of military unit designations and troop movements. What he does do is provide an excellent recounting of how we as a nation stumbled into something we were not prepared for by exploring the reasons behind the "a loss to communism anywhere is a loss to communism everywhere" sentiment so pervasive after Stalin showed his true colors at the end of WWII. Two sections stand out clearly in my mind, and it's been years since I've read it (it's one of the few books I might just read again). During a succinct discussion of what lessons were not learned in Korea to be applied later in Vietnam, he summarized our failure in Southeast Asia as no other has when he wrote that we did not recognize the impossibility of fighting a moral war, that it is extremely difficult to fight a technological war against an enemy largely independent of mechanized transport, and that we failed to grasp the difference between communism and Asian nationalism. Wow! The other memorable phrase, appearing in a discussion on extremism, was that the best defense against extremism is self-protective firmness and a willingness to compromise. If you want the nitty gritty details of who-shot -who this book might just leave you with a Purple Heart; however,if you desire to gain thoughtful insight into the underlying reasoning and motivation of our political and military leaders during a crucial period of our national history, this book could be a valuable addition to your library.

"Must" reading for all serious students of photography.
Alfred Stieglitz is legendary in the annals of American photography. In Stieglitz On Photography: His Selected Essays And Notes, Richard Whelan has compiled and annotated the best of Stieglitz's commentaries regarding the power and beauty of the photograph as an artistic and interpretative medium. Drawing from Stieglitz's exhibition reviews, travel pieces, technical articles, and various diatribes on Pictorialism and the founding of the Photo-Secession, Stieglitz On Photography is "must" reading for all serious students of the developmental history and cultural relevance of American photography.

short stories of pirates
This book features an enjoyable group of short stories about pirates, from different countries. No blood and guts here, although one tale from Africa is a little spooky. The stories can be read aloud, or read by elementary scholl readers. The softcover version of this is very nice, with a strong glossy cover with endflaps like a hardcover. The endflaps are to be used as bookmarks. Nice colorful painted illustrations on every page.
An excellent Pirate Book
I am the mother of two boys ages 3 and 4, who love Pirates. This is a great book. It gives you a collection of Pirate stories from around the world and we have a lot of fun picking which story we will read. A fun book for young and older.
It's about time!
This gorgeously illustrated collection of Pirate lore from around the world is a refreshing switch from violence-glorification usually found in Pirate stories. The focus in these stories is on adventure rather than gore. I have younger kids, and although this book is aged for 9+, it was perfectly suitable for them.

War stories by the famous Bob Capa.
This is Capa's story of his World War II. Capa was a famous photographer from the Spanish Civil War, who applied his skills in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France. For a photographer, his stories are very good and enjoyable. Like one of the previous reviewer, I have to agree that Capa does not reveal much of himself. If you take his stories, he appears to be an alcoholic and irresponsible. His photos though are world famous.
These stories are great to read and the book is not long. This is good Sunday reading.

Amazing
When I think of the founders of Magnum I see larger than life heros that are always in the right place at the right time for the perfect picture. Not only does this book show that Capa is not larger than life, but a very real man, but he also worked very hard to be at the right place at the right time...not to mention he spent much of his life at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Best birthday gift apart from the camera itself
Not overridden with anecdotes of war zones and the battlefield, Capa comes across as incredibly human from the observer's perspective during the years of conflict. Sensitive, witty, charming, and driven, he is truly fantastic and remarkable a storyteller with words as he is with a camera.

Amazing photographs
This book has some really amazing photography, they have a really powerful message. I like photos that make me feel something and Robert Capa's photos difinatly do that. Robert Capa was in the right place and the right time with alot of his photos. The only thing the book lacked i feel is more background on the photos.
Pure empathy
Ordinary people caught under extraordinary circumstances are what give these images the power that they have and elicit pure empathy from the viewer. Robert Capa earned his place in photographic history and left behind a body of work for us to consider...

It is definitive
I have not seen another book on Robert Capa that provides such a complete and insightful coverage of his career and voluminous production. For those who appreciate the importance of Capa's contribution to the history of photography and the rendition of key events spanning a momentous era of human history, this book is a "must-have". At the same time, it is unfortunate that the publishers chose to economize on the quality of the printing and the binding.

Thank God the communists lost in Spain
This collection of photos are important for the sake of history but must be evaluated in the proper context: Capa and the Loyalists sought to establish a Stalinist state in Spain, not a "democracy". The creation of a Stalinist state would have brought terror, murder, etc. upon the Spanish people and would have destroyed the country. I believe that the record of history (and my own personal experience as a Spaniard) has proven that the Nationalist victory was the best thing that could have happened to Spain at the time. Just look at the atrocities (tens of millions of dead, terror, etc) the Communists committed in Russia, Eastern Europe, Vietnam, and on and on and on; who in their right mind would wish that on anyone? Franco punished some of the loyalists but the overwhelming majority were welcomed back into society. Now that the Soviet Union has fallen and that ridiculous "philosophy" of "communism" has been proven to be one of the worst disasters visited upon mankind those who tried to force that evil upon Spain during the Civil War should hang their heads in shame. Viva Espana!
Unbelievably potent photographs of Spain¿s Civil War
Capa is considered one of the fathers of modern combat photography. These photographs clearly verify that fact. The modern combat photographers that have come after were all aware of Capa's work and if they didn't overtly copy his style, they certainly used it as a foundation. The potency of these photographs are not so much the action they sometimes capture, but in the faces set in the multitude of back drops of war. The viciousness and tragedy of this conflict hotly radiate out of some of these photographs. Others coolly reflect despair and fear. The book is at the same time a statement about war and a valuable historical document.
To read this book is to see the heart of Robert Capa
This book shows the heart of the Spainish people as they fought for their freedom. One could ask, "What Price Freedom?" Robert Capa lost his one true love when Gerda Taro was killed. To read through this book, to look at the pictures, is to look into the heart of Robert Capa.
Bob we all miss you.

Nice, brief histories of each presidential campaign
This book has pictures and an article for each campaign - beginning from George Washington up to the 1996 election. While I found some of the pictures to be quite interesting and the articles to be somewhat informative, I would still say that this is more of an overview kind of book - as opposed to a detailed version of our elections.
I think the author could have picked some other pictures or visuals to make the book more appealling, and could have written in more depth about the campaigns.
Nevertheless, the book is a nice book and is a book that could be used as a reference in some respects.
A Good Book
Deep in the political season, this book makes for a good read. It is neither a complete history nor a complete pictorial of all the great campaigning photographs which abound. I was suprised by the iconic photographs not included. I wish I had leafed through this in the bookstore before buying. That said, it is a good book for any fan of political campaigns.
great american sport
Politics is the great American sport and its bats and balls are pins and bumper stickers. This is a great history of torchlight parades, whistle stops and all sorts of campaign paraphenalia. It makes me happy I saved that LBJ for the USA button--it doesn't take long for this stuff to acquire value. SAme can't be said for websites, though. Words and images here are also a healthy reminder that one great tradition of the sport is slamming the other guy--don't forget Jefferson's Sally Hemmings scandal and Lincoln "the big monkey." More fireworks, fewer veep debate lovefests, please.

Sermons from the 1800's
This book contains edited essays of Emerson written in the 1800's. They seem to me like the sermons of a minister, which he was. They are often incomprehensible -- maybe 10% inspirational, using words as ministers did at that time. I had to push myself to finish it; however, the later essays were better (more understandable, showed common sense at times).
Truly inspirational...
This is the first book by Emerson that I've read, but hope to read more of his essays later. The book really is inspirational. Emerson is an excellent writer and his words flow together like nothing I've ever read. The essays in this book are pure poetry.... really beautiful. Even if you don't believe in the Transcendalist/Idealist view, you can still read this book and feel like you've gotten something out of it. I would recommend this for anyone who has a liking for beautiful writing.
Totally inspiring...
I cannot pick up this book without feeling encouraged and inspired. The editor has gone through and picked out some of the best passages from Emerson's works, thus saving us the trouble of wading through hundreds of pages of prose for the really good stuff. Everyone needs a copy of this book.
