Not Only for PHD's
Those in the fields of psychology/psychiatry are obviously the intended audience for this book. However, as a long-term PTSD sufferer, I found this book to be very helpful. Because this book, in essence, is the published results of a long-term study, there are plenty of charts and statistical data to read/interpret that the general public may find to be exhausting at times. The third section of the book was particularly helpful in several ways. I found the information to be re-assuring in the sense that it seems like the majority of the research from this project indicates that my experience with PTSD is not too far out-of-the-ordinary for survivors of severe trauma related to motor vehicle accidents (MVA's). Since the book states that PTSD related to MVA's is one of the fastest growing problems in America, I would hope that many others in the psychological, psychiatric, and counseling fields would take the opportunity to read and study the information contained in this book - if for no other reason than to help patients like me. Though I believe that there are other factors of PTSD that were not covered in this particular study, I believe that this book is a really good start.

Becoming a Therapist: What Do I Say, and Why?

Helpfully concrete and friendly guidance
Another, less elegant title for this book might be, "Everything new therapists want to know, but are afraid to ask." Drs. Bender and Messner have gotten down to the very basics here, in a way which is friendly, yet firm; concrete, but backed by solid psychodynamic theory. They even write about mistakes they have made in their own practices, something which is not commonly done in this genre. This book would have saved me (and my patients) from a lot of stumbling in those early months, and dare I say, years. It is fun to read, to boot!

Encountering the World: Toward an Ecological Psychology
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (1996)
Author: Edward S. Reed
Amazon base price: $45.00
Used price: $35.95
Average review score:

creative thinker and excellent writer
I learned a great deal from this book-from beginning to end. Reed is not only a thinker of great scope but also of consistency. It's a little hard to tell that Reed is a philosopher and not just a psychologist, given how little philosophy he cites and how few purely conceptual arguments he engages in. But his theoretical consistency does give the book a strong philosophical cast.

Don't just read the first half of the book, where Reed lays out his conception of ecological psychology and explains how psychology is a much more ancient phenomenon in evolutionary history than we are led to believe by current cognitive science. The second half of the book offers interesting references to archeological and anthropological work for those whose primary interest is in psychology. It also describes early development in human childhood in a way that seems well aware of comparative-cultural issues. Thus the second part of the book could be interesting whether or not one is sympathetic to ecological psychology as a research program.

Families and the Interpretation of Dreams: Awakening the Intimate Web (Haworth Psychotherapy)

Excellent intergation of families & shared dreamlife.
Holy Moses ! This is the first book I ever heard of and read that really fuses serious dream analysis, family dynamics, parapsychology, sacred literature and clinical science into a well written, non-pedantic book. This guy seems to be open to the real stuff that most of my and other people's lives is about. I mean there was some deep work in there on dreams and death, dreams and medical illness, dreams and creativity and dreams and pregancy. My wife and I really liked that part since we had some close emotional encounters with this material when one of our parents died and our son was soon concieved. I'm a trained doctor so I came to it with a little bit of a critical eye. But I was soon seduced by the guy's prose and solid research. I think he is some kind of professor along with being a doctor himself at UMASS. Lots of references always makes me feel better and he has a lot of them. Finally to put this into a historical and ancient Egyptian, African and American Indian context was a good, even brillant risk, and a risk that works!!! Anyway I'll check out some of the other stuff he has written.

An Excellent Reference Source
The Handbook of Psychotherapy Supervision offers an overview of clinical supervision from writers with backgrounds in supervision from various disciplines. If you are seriously considering research and writing in the field of supervision and/or practice, I recommend this book highly. The section on models of supervision is particularly worthy of your attention, such as Janine Bernard's Discrimination model and the orientation-specific models addressed. I found this book to be an excellent reference source and is certainly current on the major topics. The section by Wampold & Holloway does a fine job of reviewing issues in methodology and research.

Finally, I recommend this book highly.

Excellent study of mythopoetic men's work
I was recently blessed with the opportunity to read and review this book. I found it to be very readable and an extremely thorough study of men's work and its impact on society. The book is a collection of contributions from different writers divided into four parts. The first part is an introduction to mythopoetic men's work and its place in the contemporary men's movement. The first chapter is written by Editor Edward Read Barton and speak to those experienced in men's work as well as those who are not in its discussion of the various types of men's work and the similarities and differences. This first portion of the book is a lengthy discussion of the meaning of masculinity and the various ways that men perceive themselves and each other in their journeys towards meaning and integration. Mythopoetic men's work in particular uses myth, symbol and ritual to delve into the male psyche. The second part of the book discusses this type of men's work in therpeutic settings and is geared toward the counseling community. Still, an interesting ready for anyone interested in the male psyche. The third part of the book is a fascinating study of the men's organization The Mankind Project and its weekend initiation called The New Warrior Training Adventure. Collaborative research and studies follow men through these experiences and discuss the impact on those men. This work has tremendous value for men and the women and children in their lives. The final section of the books is a discussion of feminism and a search for common ground amongst gender movements. The primary theme is that of similarity between the different paths towards meaning and integration. I am a New Warrior. I have experienced the weekend adventure and I continue to be involved in ongoing work of integration. I have done more work towards becoming the man I can and want to be within The Mankind Project than in over a dozens years of therapy and other recovery work. While this book has enormous value for therapists and counselors working with men, I recommend this book as a valuable resource to any man who is interested in looking towards mythopoetic men's work as a means towards self-exploration and integration.

Essential for leaders and consultants!
This text presents much needed material in the area of applied consulting work based on the psychodynamic or psychoanalytic tradition. I have used chapters from Part I (Organization Theory and Visions of Leadership) in my graduate level OD course, and chapters from Part II (Transformational Leaders: Vulnerability, Diversity, and Connection) extensively in my work with clients, especially female leaders. The chapter by Kathy Kram and Marion McCollom Hampton, "When Women Lead: The Visibility-Vulnerability Spiral," is particularly helpful. These women articulate the dynamics that face women in leadership roles in a way that is understandable and applicable for managers and consultants. Many of my clients resonate strongly with the authors' case material. I highly recommend this book for organizational consultants and leaders.
