Marlowe and Shakespeare's Protege (Corrected)
For those of you who read my reviews and use them to try to understand literature, I owe you an apology. I made a slight error in my review of this, and I will correct it now. For those of you who know me, I cherish the writings of Marlowe, Shakespeare, Milton, Hawthorne, and Dickens. I now have a 6th hero. The opening is quite captivating when through testimony we learn of Lodovico's evil. Webster also grabs our attention with the affair between Vittoria and Bracciano. Despite the questionable qualities of these 2 characters, they are easy to like. He also draws the division between the virtuous Francisco and the ambitious Bracciano well. Cornelia is memorable as the mother who despairs over the actions of her children Flamineo and Vittoria. Isabella is fine as a picture of innocence. The Cardinal is captivating as one of the most careful characters in the play, and we need not be surprised when he gets elected Pope. Bracciano's son Giovanni is drawn well. Through an early appearance, we get a look at his character. We then see him in mourning after he has lost both his parents. Finally, we see him restore order after the massacre has fully unleashed. Lodovico is fine as a picture of ambition. (The mistake I made was that I named Lodovico in the murder of Isabella. He was innocent of her murder. But it is possible to wonder if his affair with her 'Bracciano's wife' triggered Bracciano's affair with Vittoria. Ofcourse, the affair between Bracciano and Vittoria triggers the events of this play.) Webster also offers us horrifying and yet beautiful passages, chilling omens such as the ghosts of Isabella and Bracciano, and pure suspense. My only complaint about this is that Lodovico's delight in his massacre does not mix well with Giovanni's sudden rise to power and his restoration of order. In Marlowe's "Edward II," the 17 year old Edward III fills his enemies with pure terror when he gains control of the situation. Once again, I apologize for my error, and I wish to thank all of you who found my reviews helpful.

Marlowe and Shakespeare's Protege
For those of you familiar with my writing, you know I cherish the works of Marlowe, Shakespeare, Milton, Hawthorne, and Dickens. Well, I now have a 6th favorite. Lodovico is frighteningly demonic. 1st he participates in the murder of Isabella, then he participates in the revenge of Isabella! Poor Isabella is memorable as a picture of innocence. Vittoria is an interesting woman. She is not exactly a picture of innocence, but she does carry herself well, and she faces her death with as much dignity as possible. Webster also draws the dissension between Francisco and Bracciano well. Bracciano is captivating with all of his ambition. Francisco is memorable as the good and decent man prompted to fury by the death of his innocent sister. The harsh tones between Cornelia and her son Flamineo are dramatic. Bracciano's son Giovanni is well drawn. First he is an innocent young man, but his lines reveal his good character. Then we see him after he has lost both his parents. Finally, he flips the tables on everyone and restores order. Cardinal Monticelso is also captivating. He is a very careful character who probes the situations without losing his sense of reason. And we need not be surprised when this careful character is promoted to Pope Paul IV. What's left? Only striking images, only well constructed passages, only pure terror side by side with beauty etc. My only complaint about this play is that Webster combines 2 wonderful final touches that would be wonderful by themselves, but do not combine well (in my opinion). Lodovico's delight in his massacre does not (in my opinion) mix well with Giovanni's sudden rise to power and his sudden crush of the situation. In my opinion what makes Edward III's restoration to order in Marlowe's "Edward II" so dramatic is the pure terror the 17 year old king instills in his enemies. At this point, I would like to thank all of you who found my reviews helpful.

Webster's World of Violence
The drama of John Webster is characterized by themes of revenge, misanthropy, misogyny, villainy, murder and ultimately violence. Webster's play, The White Devil parallels a modern day soap opera in which the plot keeps readers on their edge with its numerous twists and sub-plots.

I had doubts about reading Jacobean Drama, but once I picked up The White Devil, I was hooked. I was especially intrigued with the duality of the heroine Vittoria. In Vittoria, Webster offers us a character we love to hate, but finds ourselves pitying her, perhaps even siding with her.

The White Devil is certainly a play worth reading.

Barth's Moral Theology: Human Action in Barth's Thought
Published in Hardcover by T. & T. Clark Publishers, Ltd. (2001)
Author: John Webster
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

An excellent guide to Barth's theological ethics
Webster continues the task taken up in his previous effort, Barth's Ethics of Reconciliation, which examined Barth's mature ethical writings. Here, he expands the defence of his thesis that Barth's relativizing of human moral consciousness before the Word of God does not at all compromise, but rather properly establishes, the true place of human action. He offers a revision of previous efforts at Barth interpretation (similar to Bruce McCormack's work) through a more exhaustive and systematic study, utilizing neglected or previously unavailable texts such as Barth's Muenster Ethics and The Christian Life, as well as the early ethical writings not addressed in Webster's last study in Barthian ethics. It is an important contribution to Barth scholarship and to theological ethics upon which further efforts will be built.

Not bad, with reservations
This book is a rather facile account of the murder on Nov. 23, 1849, of Dr. George Parkman, uncle of historian Francis Parkman, by a Harvard professor. This is a famous case, and this book gives all the gruesome details. Boston in 1849 was a small world and many famous persons flit thru the pages of this book: Longfellow, Melville, Charles Sumner, Edward Everett, Oliver Wendell Holmes, etc. As a true crime book I found it objectionable that the author purported to tell us what persons thought, but overall the book is not bad and holds one's interest. A shorter account of the same crime written by the famed crime writer Edmund L. Pearson can be found in the book Crimes That Shocked America, edited by Brant House and published in 1961 by Ace Books, Inc.

Simple!
Easy to read, comprehensive, practical. This book goes through everything involved in the holidays (primarily in December, but much applicable to other times) and gives very useful and simple advice for making it more manageable. I will really put this book to use - from the tips for enjoying the holidays more to gift ideas, entertaining suggestions and even a list of additional resources. Mostly Christmas, but includes Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, too, plus helpful tips for other times of year.

Could be More Simple
Explains dynamic characteristics of circuits very well. It has a ton of information - which can be too much. If you are just starting out in a course on instrumentation, I would recommend, "Principles of Bioinstrumentation" by Normann. His book is much simpler. Ideally, you should get both,..., it depends what level you are at (as a 4th year bioengineering student, I preferred the simple version...)

The content is almost identical to the second edition
It was with great enthusiasm that we ordered the 3rd edition of Professor's Webster big hit. With all my respects for Professor Webster, I was personally disapointed to observe that this edition has almost the same content as the second one. Maybe it is worth mentioning that I have adopted this text for my bioinstrumentation course from the very first edition. It is amazing that some of the very good and recent works done by Prof. Webster's team of engineers and students was not at all included. Even the references are almost the same as the second edition. As the second edition had really something to say compared to the first one, the natural expectation was to see a 3rd edition much more elaborated in terms of novelties in the field. The amount of new material put into this edition seems not to justify the publication of the 3rd edition.

very good
This book is very good about medical devices and application

A Critical Reading of Tolkien's Major Works
This book includes a brief biography, a brief summary of Tolkien's possible influences, an explanation of the creation of Tolkien's mythology and created languages and critical readings of most of his stories, including such small pieces as "Leaf by Niggle" and "The Father Christmas Letters." Overall, I'd have to say that more value can be gotten from reading the actual works of Tolkien, his letters, and the excellant biography written by Humphry Carpenter to get the best overall picture. It is, however, a valuable resource if all one needs is an adequate basic summary of the author and his stories. The style is informal and therefore quite readable, but sometimes dry and packed full of the usual(and by now, tiresome) anecdotes about Tolkien's dislike of allegory, his dissaproval of people who like to psycho-analyze his stories, and his disapproval of French food. This book would be a good source if a person under the college level wanted to do a nice report on Tolkien.

Can a Chief Justice Love God: The Life of John Jay

Just a polemic, and a badly written one, at that.
This is neither a biography of jay, nor a history of his times, but a polemic intended to show that, because John Jay was a Christian, the Founders could not have believed in separation of church and state. As you might expect of one who holds such a thesis, the author writes at about a sixth-grade level. Actually, it reads a lot like "1066 and All That," but this author is deadly serious, and deadly dull. I didn't get very far into the book before deciding to return it, and I would give it zero stars if that were possible.

A request from the author for a balanced review
One of the guidelines of Amazon.com for reviews is that the reviews are not supposed to be spiteful. It was my impression that when one had a book review to do whether for college or whatever, the reviewer had an obligation to read the entire book and then give his or her objective summary. This book was put on the recommended list of books to read for 2002 by Marvin Olasky, editor of World magazine in the Nov. 30, 2002 edition on page 36. Mr. Olasky's article "70 mph Treadmill" shows how Mr. Olasky does his reviews- he reads the books that he reviews while he runs on his treadmill. Mr. Olasky is a very busy man, yet he took the time to read the book. The reviewer of my book on Amazon.com admits that he has not finished the book. "I didn't get very far into the book before deciding to return it." What kind of a grade would this student get from the teacher? I ask that this anonymous reader's review be removed or at least that my book is given equal time from a positive review. The book was in 7th place among books on Lawyers and Judges before this "deadly dull" review and has since fallen to 42nd place. I appeal to your staff to include reviews that follow your guidelines and I appeal to readers to have an open mind about the details of the book.

Analog Signal Processing

Nothing attractive.
"Analog Signal Processing" is not about analog signal processing and it is not about analog circuit design either. I don't think its title is consistent with its contents. This book is kind of broadband, however, it does not cover anything in depth. It is full of boring formulae and figures. It cannot be used as a textbook, maybe it can be used as a handbook.
