The Berenstain Bear Scouts and the White Water Mystery
Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (1901)
Authors: Stan Berenstain, Jan Berenstain, and Michael Berenstain
Amazon base price: $11.00
Average review score:

My son's first mystery!
This book introduced him to a love of mystery books and is the first Bear Scout book in his Berenstain Bear book collection. The Too Tall Gang and the Bear Scouts have a boat race. They never passed them, but the nasty gang won the race. How? In an underhanded way by using two boats and a short-cut trek through the woods to the finish line.It was fun reading this book 'slowly' trying to come up with different scenarios as to how the Too Tall Gang won the race without passing the Bear Scout boat. We were happy that one of our scenarios was close the the outcome. A discussion about fairness in competition and deception followed. It made great reading and great conversation with our book loving 6 year old. I highly recommend it.

A wonderful story of a talented sea Captain.
The research by Michael Jay Mjelde made this book possible. The Captain, Daniel McLaughlin, managed to make 42 trips around the Horn without serious incident. The Captain is my great-grandfather on my mother's side and came from the island of Gran Manan in the bay of Fundy. I would love to hear from others who have read the book.

Handsome book!
"Come Hell or High Water" is a delightful and informative anthology of accounts from steamboat passengers, crews and newspapermen from the 19th century. Gillespie explores all aspects of steamboat travel from the development and construction of the vessels to the personal accounts of steamboat races, accidents and the pleasures of steamboating on the Western Rivers.

I found it readable, substantial, and well-informed.

How Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure
Fast Lane To Victory is the third in Wish Publishing's outstanding "Anything You Can Do...New Sports Heroes For Girls" series and the story of swim champion Jenny Thompson. Swimming was what Jenny like best, but when her friends at school started to tease her and call her "tomboy" and "Too Tall Thompson", she felt the pressures placed on a lot of young girls to conform to social norms of what was "proper" for girls. Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure and became so successful as an athlete that she came to be called the "Fastest Swimmer in the World". Also very highly recommended for school and community library collections are the first two volumes in this superbly presented and inspiring sports oriented series for girls: A Drive To Win: The Story Of Nancy Lieberman (40-8, ...) and Sword Of A Champion: The Story Of Sharon Monplaisir (39-4, ...).

Pleasant reading
I found the reading of Moose in the Water Bamboo on the Bench so enjoyable I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole book. This was one of the most enjoyable books I had read in a long time concerning flyfishing and the outdoors. Kathy Scott has done a fantastic job taking you on a journey from start to finish through the adventures she and her husband experience in the Maine woods and his building of a bamboo fly rod. I have read this book 3 times I find that enjoyable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and and loves to just read a good book. I greatly anticipate Kathy's next book.

Parthenopi
Michael Waters has chosen to forgo the usual time line approach to New & Selected volumes; rather, he has wisely decided to arrange Parthenopi as if it were a book of all new poems. The result is stunning. These poems written over the course of his stellar career radiate with fresh vigor and shades of meaning as they reflect off one another in new ways. Few poets so adeptly and remarkably mesh craft, insight, narrative line, lyrical surprise and intensity as does Waters. This is a book that needs to be on the shelf of every serious reader or student of contemporary American poetry.
