A modern, independent, entirely Arab television news network
Collaboratively written by Egyptian born Middle East journalist Mohammed El-Nawawy and Middle East media expert Adel Iskandar, Al-Jazeera: How The Free Arab News Network Scooped The World And Changed The Middle East is a fascinating and informed history. This is a superbly presented account of Al-Jazeera, a modern, independent, entirely Arab television news network based in Qatar, which since the September 11 attacks, gained high profile prominence through daily exposure on CNN. This is also the compelling story of Al-Jazeera's struggle to keep its independence as an international news network, beholden to none. Overall, Al-Jazeera is an engaging, unique, detailed study of the origin of the Al-Jazeera network, its broadcasts, its effect on Arab viewers, and its struggle for a free press. Al-Jazeera is very highly recommended for Journalism Studies and Mideast Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

Review from one of Al-Jazeera's audiences
This is a great book and I highly recommend it for everyone striving to know about the Arab media from an objective perspective. The book will inform you about the Arabs' struggle for freedom of speech through an unbiased Arab network that is not subject to the control of any government. The authors have succesfully portrayed the true picture of the Arab media scene through Arab eyes.

An excellent book on a controversial TV channel
As everyone has seen Al-Jazeera logos on Western TV stations after September 11's tragegy when they played Bin Laden videos, people have yearned to know more about this controversial Arabic satellite channel. El-Nawawy & Iskandar's book is not only the first on this station, but I think is also a very balanced, comprehensive and interesting read. It covers the role of the media in the Arab World, and the view of Al-Jazeera through Western eyes. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about the important role of media in creating democracy and better understanding the views of Arab civil society.

Theorical and Practical
This book, containing plenty of cases in accordance with each topic in every chapter, gives readers hand-on perception on how the theory exists within the business world. I especially love chapter 8:"Channel Power", which specifies 5 powers a manufacturer or distributor may owns and how to deploy them properly in different situation or period. While you read, the book keeps you thinking about your own business and desiring to apply these breakthrough knowledge tomorrow, great!

A must-own resource for channel and supply-chain strategy
It's been said that experience is inevitable, but learning is not. The latest and greatest edition of the classic MBA textbook "Marketing Channels" offers distribution and marketing executives a chance to remedy that situation.

Anne and Erin, professors at the Kellogg School and INSEAD respectively, are the two lead authors. So be forewarned -- this is an academic textbook. It's challenging, rigorous, and thought provoking.

The sixth edition is organized around a comprehensive framework for channel strategy. Each chapter walks through a different element of the framework. This approach integrates a wide range of material while making it easy to sample just the strategic topics that are relevant to your business.

Here are a few of my favorite sections in this book:

- Chapter 3 describes a methodology for segmenting customers in a channel. (Namely, focus on how end-user customers buy and what value they seek from their channel. Don't simply measure which products they buy or who they are.)

- Chapters 7 and 10 present frameworks to analyze two common channel strategy decisions - Should we sell direct or use distributors? How many distributors should we authorize?

- Chapter 11 is a wonderful and practical synthesis of Erin's 20+ years of research on creating effective and profitable strategic alliances in distribution.

- Chapter 14 demonstrates how their channel strategy framework applies to electronic channels. (There are many excellent e-commerce examples throughout the book.)

- Chapter 15 provides a great overview of the fundamental issues facing the wholesale distribution channel. It's a dramatic improvement over previous editions of this book.

The book is also chock-full of detailed case studies and examples from a wide range of industries, both domestic and international.

Marketing Channels is a must-own for anyone who thinks strategically about marketing channels and supply chains. As both a channel strategy consultant and one of Erin's former students, I can personally vouch for the validity of their insights into channel strategy. You will not be disappointed by the quality and rigor of thinking in this book.

The book also has its own website , although there is not very much content on the site yet.

Outstanding book on marketing channel behavior.
In a business world that is constantly changing, it is absolutely critical to understand the function and behavior of marketing channels -- that is, the roles that manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers play in the channel of distribution. The businesses that understand these tenets will be able to adapt to changes in the marketplace, and those who do not, will ultimately fail.

This is the 5th edition of the original book that developed the theories that explain the structure and behavior of marketing channels. There is still nothing better. For those who understand the significance of channels, it provides a clear roadmap for the analysis of changes. For those who do not, it will explain channel member behavior and illuminate recent successes due to channel management (Walmart, Dell Computer), so that you can understand how the lessons can be applied to your business.

I recommend this book to all business managers, not just to read once, but to keep in your office and refer to often through the years in order to navigate the high seas of channel change.

An Electronic Companion to Biostatistics

Good stuff!
Wow! Who knew Biostatistics could actually be fun? It had been a several years since I'd had any courses in this subject and my memory of it was that it was difficult and rather dry. But as soon as I popped in this CD, it was like learning it all over again. And this time it was a lot of fun!

To have the material presented the way it is in this software (ie-using really cool multimedia), makes it not only very understandable, but very interesting as well. I'd certainly say this is a must for a student or anyone else interested in Biostatistics.

Unholy Babylon: The Secret History of Saddam's War
Published in Paperback by DIANE Publishing Co (1991)
Authors: Adel Darwish and Gregory Alexander
Amazon base price: $14.00
Average review score:

Inside the Mesopotamian Frankenstein Created by the US
Unholy Babylon is the detailed chronicle of the creation of a monster - Saddam Hussein - aided and abetted by the United States and other western powers. The US needed Saddam, in their estimation, to counter the Iranian threat. The US and European countries were willing to tolerate and to support internal totalitarianism and terror, suppression of dissent by force, gas warfare and other war crimes against internal enemies and Iran, as long as Saddam would fight the Iranian menace. The British looked the other way as Saddam murdered dissenters on their soil. Everyone looked away as virtually every country in Europe, plus the US and Canada, lined up to supply Saddam Hussein with long range rockets and essential atomic bomb technology.
Adel Darwish is eminently qualified for the job of investigating Saddam's empire, having been a veteran foreign correspondent in Iraq before he was thrown out for reporting a major missile testing mis-hap and thus revealing Saddam's secret missile development program.
The hard cover edition of Unholy Babylon has been updated and corrected and is probably well worth the extra investment.
Read this book to understand what is happening now. It has been the source book (sometimes not acknowledged) for several "informed analyses."...

The Wisdom of the Saints: An Anthology
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (1987)
Author: Jill Haak Adels
Amazon base price: $27.50
Average review score:

A rich collection of quotations from the lips of 200 saints
This is a unique anthology that allows hundreds of canonized Catholic saints, from all historical periods including the present day, to speak directly in their own words on a variety of topics. The quotations are brief, and are arranged thematically. while the topics range from the very profound and serious ("Time and Eternity", "Suffering", "Mystic Union") to the very human and everyday ("Food", "Travels"). Each of the 65 thematic sections is introduced by an authoritative and often witty commentary that makes one wish that the author's voice could be heard even more often. The overall effect is one of great abundance and variety. Saints, the reader soon discovers, are found in every personality type, every social class, intelligence level and temperament. They are a lively and diverse bunch. You will meet old favorites like Francis of Assisi and Thomas Moore, and encounter completely unfamiliar heroes, like Charles Lwanga of Uganda. There is something here to fit every mood, and to inspire much further reading. THE WISDOM OF THE SAINTS is ideal for inspirational reading, for hunting quotations to surprise, edify and dazzle audiences, or as a reference resource. A biographical appendix tells the brief life story of each of the 200 saints who have shared their written or spoken thoughts with the reader. "Sanctity does not consist in being odd, but it does consist in being rare." (St. Francis de Sales, 1567-1622).

A wonderful book!
I'm a student teacher and I have used this book in the class I'm with and they love it! The words are powerful and have a very interesitng rhyming pattern. Each page has a new line, that explains the page before.

What I like best about this books is how is repeats itself over and over. The kids love it. Towards the end of the book, they were saying it along with me.

The illustraions are INCREDIBLE!!!

If you're a teacher, I highly suggest you get this book. If you're a parent, I highly suggest you buy this book. You won't be sorry.

Incessant giggling
This book starts a complete and utter 'gigglefest' at my house every time it's read (which is quite often!), we discovered it from the library and now it's a favorite gift item for all the children that we know. The characters and illustrations are great, and my 5 year old son just loves seeing these well known characters (from other stories) present in this fun book.

Wonderful pictures and powerful language
This book has been a favorite of my 6 year old son since he was 3 or so. For quite a while, it was almost an every evening affair. Now that he's older, he is starting to realize pieces are taken from other stories, and the wonderful circular silliness really appeals to him. Finally, it's a wonderful book to read aloud, playing games with rhythm and speed. Few of his books have held his interest for so long and continue to delight him. How much more do you want in a children's book?
