Lucid, insightful explication
Cleman is one of the foremost authorities on Cable (Cable himself being a much-underappreciated U.S. author) and draws the reader to new insights and appreciations without recourse to flash or intellectual postering. Cleman (as educator and critic)and Cable should both be considered national treasures.

The story of the Wizard of Tuskegee (a.k.a. The Peanut Man)
This juvenile biography of "George Washington Carver: Nature's Trailblazer" presents its subject as a true pioneer in ecology. Part of the "earth Keepers" series, this book by Teresa Rogers tells how Carver was a young boy who wanted to know about "every strange stone, flower, insect, bird, or beast." Rogers traces Carver's career from his birth as the son of a slave, his training as an agricultural student, and his famous work as a professor at the Tuskegee Institute. Those who have heard of how Carver invented all sorts of uses for the peanut will learn what the scientist came up with in terms of scientific agriculture and creative chemistry, not to mention products created from sweet potatoes. Rogers does a nice job of not just providing biographical information, but of also providing the context of the changing times for young readers and including quotations from Carver himself about everything from nature to education to race relations. Students will be impressed by everything accomplished over the long and distinguished career of the man who called himself "Nature's Trailblazer."

The back of this book contains a list of all the products created by Carver from peanuts (beverages, cosmetics, dyes and paints, foods, foods for farm animals, medicines and many others) as well as one detailing some of the key bulletins he produced over forty years from "Feeding Acorns" to "Nature's Garden for Victory and Peace." Other books in the "Earth Keepers" series look at Henry David Thoreau, Rachel Carlson, John Muir, Jacques Cousteau, and Jane Goodall.

A Great Book
George Washington Carver
By Sam Wellman
9/24/02

This summer I read. The incredible inspiring novel called George Washington Carver, a biography written by Sam Wellman .The book was about George Washington Carver an inventor and educator. This book showed that George Washington Carver's life was very tough back in the 1870's.The book let's you see life back then, but not just anyone's life a person's life that anyone in some way can relate to.

One non-stop turning point thought out this book was that George Washington Carver being on his own and growing up all by himself .One of most the interesting things in this book was the passage "Born the Son of Slaves, he would work with Gods Help to free the South". That was a remarkable description of what George Washington Carver meant to some people, because he believed so much in God and so did everybody else and also because he did every thing he could for the south. Thougthout the book it was very easy for me to keep track of the main character because the book was a biography. A book about someone's life. In the whole book I can really say, "It felt like George Washington Carver really played his role in history''. (1871 - 1943)

I would recommend this book to any person looking for an exciting book,. The type of reader for this book would be a person who likes to read about other peoples history or life story, a person who can put their self in a place like George Washington Carver's and understand his point of view, or someone who is willing, and has faith in God should read this wonderful book. I liked this book a lot. And I also enjoyed it because of the fact that the author of the book wrote many other titles.

Excellent For Younger Kids
I bought this as a gift for my niece last Christmas. It was admittedly an attempt to expose her to other cultures and achievements. The best compliment was paid as she described the book to her teacher, who asked that she bring this in to read it to the class. I read this and its a good explanation of a brilliant man who thrived in his time. A good read for kids of any background.

I could not put this book down!
This book really amazed me! Facts that I thought were truly facts were not! For instance, I wonder how many people know that there is no Congrecional Medal of honor, or how about all all the women that have fought in wars, but never mentioned in history books? A great read!!!

The Key Players of the Revolutionary War
This excellent book provides compendium biographies for all the major commanding generals of both sides during the American Revolution. The average length of each bio is roughly 10-30 pages, which provides enough general detail for each personality. No book has put under one cover all the key military players of the Revolution. In addition to all the standards like Washington and Lafayette, the reader also gets many lesser known American generals, as well as all the British personalities. The American Revolution was not a war that produced any brilliant generals on either side. Readers may be surprised to learn how imcompetent many American generals were, and how basically competent most of their British counterparts were in contrast. This book should provide some interesting perspectives on the major commanders involved in both sides during the American Revolution.

Evenhanded and thus unique!
This book examines both Washington's subordinates (there were many) as well as his supposedly better trained British antagonists. Only recently have books surfaced positing that the British lost the War for Independence more out of failings in their strategy than brilliance by American generals. After reading this book you may agree.

The future United States lost more than 70% of the battles in the war. In some cases the losses were catastrophic. Yet the Americans won the war.

A Chinese proverb says, "The best lie is to tell the truth". As the truth comes out it makes me prouder to call myself an American. This is because one eventually comes to an understanding as to how we could possibly have defeated the most mighty nation on Earth at the time.

Enjoy!
