Also, when one mentions diet, I think about scrimping to find something to suppliment the diet for lack of choices. Dr. Walsh provides not only causes but also solutions/alternatives to food sources that will not cause or at least diminish these symptoms.
In keeping things short I would encourage this book not only to individuals that know they have food allergies but also to those that suffer from many of the symptoms like headaches amd nausea who are probably like me and never thought the food eaten may be the source of the problem.
Wonderful book and easy to read.

What differentiates Schickel from Bogdanovich and Emery is the fact that, for many years, he wrote film reviews for Time magazine and thus had an immense audience with which to share his opinions about more than a thousand films. Also, he is the author of more than 20 books about film making which include biographies of Marlon Brando, Cary Brando, and James Cagney. Over the years, he has earned and richly deserves his reputation as one of the most thoughtful and knowledgeable of film authorities. In this volume, he interacts with eight of the greatest film directors. At no time does he seem intimidated by them nor does he ever disrupt the flow of information exchanged with self-serving observations. He guides each director into subject areas which are probably of great interest to most film buffs but he also allows each director to ramble, digress, etc. when reminiscing or when sharing specific opinions about films and actors with whom they were associated. Sure, there is some delicious gossip. And yes, some insights not otherwise available. However, for the most part, Schickel sets up various subjects and then allows each director (many of them a personal friend) to proceed wherever he may wish, at whatever pace he may prefer. His brilliant orchestration of responses ensures their scope and depth. That is to say, he did not merely turn on the recorder and then let each of the eight take it from there. On his reader's behalf, Schickel remains actively involved, indeed engaged in the exchange of information but at no time is intrusive. Within its genre, this is indeed a "classic."

Special attention is given to the cultural context and concerns facing the Church at the time, how abuses were curbed, and what certain figures did to make sure that the Inquisition did not become a means for clerical abuse and self-interest.
One of the best features of this book was the pointing out of errors by past Inquisition historians. Walsh reveals inherant bias in some writers, and outright ignorance of evidence in some cases. The chapter on Llorente was particularly helpful.
The problem I had with this book was that the author seemed to be a heretic himself, by Catholic standards. He went so far as denouncing salvation sola gratia. On page 222 we read, "Was not Luther's doctrine of salvation by grace alone a restatement, with a somewhat different emphasis, of the old despairing dogma of the Alumbrados, the Manichees, the Gnostics, the Buddhists?"
I don't know where he was trying to go here - perhaps he meant to say "faith alone", but salvation sola gratia has always been the infallible dogmatic teaching of the Church (See Council of Trent Canon 1).
For things such as this, I hesitate to give this to Protestants. Though it might help clarify the issues surrounding the Inquisition, it might unnecessarily "confirm" their worst fears regarding the Catholic doctrine of justificiation. I simply penned some notes into the margin of this page pointing this out.
Overall a good book, but it has its flaws.
What one will find is not some ruthless killer, but men who truly loved God and the Catholic Church. If you have friends who continue the bash the Church because of the myths of the Inquistion, this is the book to give them. After reading this book, you will understand the reason behind the Inquisition and how the Inquistion saved Europe from many of the ruthless and violent sects which had taken root in Europe.
This book is filled with historical facts concerning many of the events and people of the Inquisition. The Faith was restored and this allowed the Church to prosper amongst the many heresies which had seduced so many people. If you really want to understand the historical facts behind the Inquisition, Thomas Walsh and his book are the place to start.

The Catholic Encyclopedia of 1909 (available online) has scholarly researched articles that prove that both the Rosary and the Shroud of Turin are frauds, but the Catholic Church continues to pawn these on the public. It acts like a parent who tells her child that the tooth fairy stole her tooth in the middle of the night. I know many people will be angry with this review, but I challenge them to research the original sources before giving a blanket condemnation.
I must disagree with a previous reviewer that said that the book's age is beginning to show. The apparitions of Fatima occurred in 1917. The fact that the book was written closer to the time-frame of the occurrences there is an asset, not a detriment. And yet the book and it's well regarded message could not be more current. This one is not to be missed.
