Boring, lightened only by Wises' gentle humanity
When I purchased this book, i was trepiditious about Mr wises particpation. After all.Mr thurman is an acknowledged authority on tibetan buddhism,a friend of hh dalai lama, and wise is a alcoholic, trying to come to grips with his life. well, thank God for mr wises input in this Book1 It made it readable, and somewaht enjoyable.Mr Thurman comes off as a bullying professor, another self important gasbag who has spent too much time in academia.I have no doubt that he is a sincere buddhist, though what comes off here is a longwinded, pedantic bore. The cloak and dagger bit is a little much, though I am sure his fans will eat it up[will the chinese catch me at the border, etc.]The chinese come off rather brutally ,especially in regard to the compassion esposed throughout this book. For the truest of true believers, though Mr wises is entertaining, engaging and I'd travel with him anytime. Just leave Mr thurman home with a mirror and tape recorder.please.

Tibetan Buddhism with a human side
This book was an exhilarating reading experience. With Tad Wise's descriptions of the scenery and Robert Thurman's vivid teachings, I felt as if I was there with them learning and experiencing everything. Their journey was long and storied and well presented. Seeing the experience from two sides, the teacher (Thurman) and the student (Wise) give a wide view of this country and its religion. Wise's antidotes add the human side to the experience. It shows how even you can achieve these great things. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates journeys, religion, or even just a good true story. Thurman and Wise's account make the trek memorable.

A good book.... BUT....
This book, I suppose, could be read by one of two groups of people. First: it could be read by the New Age Hippie traveller types looking for an intreguing story about a man travelling. I more approve of this kind of reading..... Tad Wise part of the story is told with humor and warm feeling.... The second, more Buddhafied group, looking to Prof. Thruman as a kind of guru, is not going to get enough here. Bad Dharma. Too little.

Perhaps, if one was going to read his sermons with a couple of other books, one could get a good understanding of something. It when accompanied by Wise's prose is fairly... um, enlightening....

I'm afraid that lots of people are going to miss that though.... If the two journeys are disconnected, the book goes to become mediocre..... keep that in mind!!!

Just try it
Babywise was the best advice I ever received - it really works! I give this book to everyone I know who is having a baby - I want them to share in the wonderful experiences I have had as a parent-all because I followed the principals of Babywise. My first son who is 22 months has slept through the night since he was 9 weeks old and my second son who is 4 months just started last month. When it's time for naps and bedtime, no one can believe how easily they go to sleep. No rocking, singing, juice, bottles, etc!! My oldest even goes to his crib when I say it's time for a nap! This type of parent-directed scheduling provides for good children as well. Just as the book says will happen, people tell me how lucky I am to have such good kids. Its not luck, its training. I can't imagine trying to be a parent without these principals. Try it! There's nothing to lose, except interupted sleep and cranky children (and who wants that?). Take control of your children instead of them controlling you. Getting them into a routine is best thing for them and you.

Parent's Everywhere Need This Book
Gary Ezzo has really got his information down. The PDF method saved my sanity. I am a fairly young mom and was so depressed after the birth of my healthy baby boy. I needed sleep and I needed a break. I was introduced to this book by a friend that had used the book through her three children and was successful. I was skeptical and really only took the book to be kind. After reading the book I decided to give it a go. Man am I glad I did. My son, now 9 months old, has slept through the night since he was three weeks old and I have been a very happy mom. He knows his schedule and it makes trips and activities so easy to have. I love this book!

Wow It actually works
I am a new mom and got this book from a friend after watching amazing stuff happen with 2 other PDF babies. I wanted to try this as no one had ever taken the time to go this indepth into parenting before and they were so many old wives tales. By 2 wks my baby girl was sleeping through the night for 7 hours and she also knew her naptimes and waketimes by around 4wks. She is now 17 months and sleeping through the night for 10hours. Parenting is not so much guess work either, I feel confident in what I do since I know when my baby is fed and changed something else must be the matter when she cries and that i s very seldom. The further info on playtime activities is wonderful, she is alert and active during her waketimes and we have a great time. My only regret is that we do not have this book on our bookshelves here in Barbados, I would buy one for every new mom I know, it is a great shower gift and would save many women much time and tears. I really feel as though I can have another baby very soon since it does not seem like such a hassle but we will wait for further blessings.

To Dream or not to....
My biggest problem with this book was that it didn't cover alot of things I dreamed about. Great for a first time user because of the easy to use format and language. I myself could have done without the biblical references(after all we're not all Christians)

Windows to the soul
This is a very insiteful and valuable book. It goes into detail of all that is involved in the making of dreams. Where they come from, how they develop and how we can make sense out of their nonsense. Definitely worth reading a few times.

Great insight to your own soul
I found this book a great tool. It gives practical tools for breaking apart the symbols of your dreams. I bought this book two years ago and didn't read it right away. I did write down a few dreams at that time. Recently I picked up the book and looked back at those dreams and was blown away at the timing of the dreams to what was really happening in my life at the time. If you want a deeper understanding of yourself and a guide of being led by the Holy Spirit looking at your dreams is a must. As a Christian it was refreshing to have a book that spoke to me instead bordering on fortune telling that alot of dream books lead to these days.

Interesting subject, dry book.
The subject of the Dead Sea Scrolls is a fascinating one. But the book was very dry and tedious to read.

Its Value is as a Commentary on 50 DSS
_DSS Uncovered_ was first published in 1992 shortly after the embargo on the Scrolls had been broken. Eisenman and Wise played key roles in those events.Unfortunately _DSS Uncovered_ will be largely remembered for its sensational aspects. Chief among these is the "pierced messiah" text, Eisenman's interpretation of 4Q285. (On this matter Eisenman has since recanted according to none other than Wise who wrote this in _The Dead Sea Scrolls_ on page 292.)

This is not to fault the translations. I have no particular problem with the translations offered by E&W. For example, in 4Q521 E&W suggest "resurrect the dead" for VMTIM YCHYH. Perhaps a more literal translation might be "enliven the dead." However is there that much difference between raising from the dead and enlivening a person? In the thinking of the people of the place and time of the DSS, one raised a person from the dead by enlivening them and enlivening them "raised" them from the realm of the dead.

As a digressive thought, I might warn that the reader ought to be aware that fragment and column numbers, and sometimes scroll numbers, change from book to book. There are changes between the two books by Garcia-Martinez on the DSS texts. This is just a hazard of DSS studies.

Hopefully the above matters will not overshadow the usefulness of this book. There are transliterations, translations, and most of all...commentaries on 50 different DSS texts. E&W are quite right to point out that their 50 texts compares favorably with the volume of DSS texts which had been published up to that time. Also the commentaries point out to the reader esoteric allusions, interrelationships between the texts, and the beauty of some of the texts as well.

The real and enduring value of _DSS Uncovered_ is in its commentary.

The Dead Sea Scrolls -- The Supplement
This book contains fifty short texts recovered from the Qumran caves, all fragmentary and some much worse than others.

The texts are grouped thematically into chapters, each chapter beginning with an introduction explaining the genre of text in question. For each text, the authors/editors give you a discussion/analysis, touching on relevant context and highlighting ideas that appear in the text, the Hebrew transliteration of the text (in contemporary Hebrew characters), and a translation. In addition, the center of the book contains a series of black and white photos, some of the area (Wadi Qumran and its caves, Masada) and some of the scroll fragments.

I've casually cross-checked the 50 texts in this volume against my larger edition of the Scrolls (Geza Vermes's translation), and many -- perhaps all -- of the fifty are also contained in the larger edition. What's different here, and what makes this book valuable, is the different translation (designed to emphasize, by vocabulary choice, points of commonality with the Jamesian Christian writings of the New Testament) and the commentary.

The fragmented texts reveal a community that was xenophobic, nationalistic, militant, pro-Maccabean and wildly apocalyptic. In addition, certain specific doctrines are clearly illuminated, including the resurrection of the dead and a single (as opposed to dual) Messiah.

The authors therefore paint a different picture of the Qumran community from proponents of the "Essene Theory" (like Geza Vermes). This makes for interesting reading of the texts in this book and also informs alternative understandings of other Dead Sea Scrolls texts. Very, very interesting.

Spy: The Inside Story of How the FBI's Robert Hanssen....
This is a fascinating book. I couldn't put it down; stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to completely read in one sitting. David Wise definitely has contacts inside the FBI and CIA, otherwise it would be difficult to understand where he obtained his information. He goes into great detail and leaves one wondering exactly how competent are these agencies. I recommend this book to anyone who desires a better understanding as to how the FBI and CIA operate. After reading this book, you will want to read Wise's book on the Aldrich Ames case.

Best of the Hanssen books
I have read four books on the Hanssen case and this is by far the best. It offers a well-researched story about all aspects of the Hanssen case and includes detailed information about the inside workings of the FBI and CIA. It also manages to be extremely thorough without focusing excessively on the more lurid aspects of Hanssen's betrayals. Wise gives a vivid picture of how espionage works, what the effects of Hanssen's spying were, and why Hanssen was able to remain undetected for so long. The only flaw, if one can call it that, is Wise's somewhat dry prose style and matter-of-fact approach to storytelling. Other books have more of the salacious details, such as the text of Hanssen's pornographic e-mails and descriptions of his relationship with a stripper, but if you only have time for one Hanssen book this is definitely the one.

Prison isn't good enough for a tratior...
David Wise's book about the FBI's Robert Hanssen who betrayed his country is clear and concisely written.

Is is the best book on Hanssen and his betrayals of secrets dealing with the FBI and CIA. Mr Wise's book almost seems to good to be true more fiction than reality, but that is exactly what it is reality. The game of espionage is messy business indeed and Mr. Wise paints the picture clearly in his book.

In my opinion this is the best of the current books available on the subject.

The Fall Of Jerusalem
Mr. Wise has taken the historical writings of Josephus and put it to story. The characters inclued some found in the Bible, such as Mariam who was healed by the touch of Jesus, who are struggling to survie.Another character is Yochanan Ben Zakkai: the founder of modern Judaisum who tries to preserve his beliefs in the middle of a war. In this story the people of Jerusalem know that unity is necessary to defeat the Romans but one thing stands in the way of this unity, their pride.

Over-all a fast paced and enjoyable, prophetic novel.
The Jerusalem Scrolls is an above average prophetic novel, dealing with prophecy concerning the Millenium. There seems to be an inordinate amount of these kinds of stories out right now, for obvious reasons. I liked this one because it attempts to explore the "End of Time" questions from 3 diametrically opposed religious viewpoints. It tries to validate each religion. Yet, also exposes the inherent prejudices that exist within each religious/cultural framework, and how those prejudices determine each person's "take" on prophecy. The characters are likeable and the story is fast-paced. I only wish I had realized there would be a sequel beforehand. I have visions of the series stretching into several books, much as the Left Behind series has.

This book can be very helpful.
The people who are zealously denouncing this book must not be reading it. One reviewer wrote that Mr. Ezzo says that children who are fed on demand become brats who steal and that infants should only be fed every 3 hours no matter what. Nothing could be further from the truth. The book clearly states that if your baby is hungry then you should feed it, no matter the time. The book is very much against clock watching and strict scheduling. As a first time parent, I have found the practical advice very helpful. Our baby is now 7 months old and consistently sleeps through the night. And no, he is not a failure-to-thrive or developmentally delayed baby, but a healthy, happy infant who is still breastfed. My husband and I do not strictly follow any "rules" supposedly in these books. We have common sense and do not use parenting guides as divine revelation, but as an adjunct to our own morals and intuitions.
As long as parents don't forget to do this, the books can be very helpful and I would still recommend them. If nothing else, they provide an alternative philosophy to "attachment parenting". When you prepare for parenthood, you should read as much as possible, even if some of the material goes against your beliefs. I think it's a good thing also to read parenting material with opposing viewpoints. You can then explore what feels right for you and your family. You simply don't implement the principles with which you don't agree. It's as simple as that.
As far as the paranoia about these books being a way to inculcate families into fundamentalist christianity, my husband and I are not conservative christians and still use these books.
As long as parents use common sense, when reading any "parenting guide" they should be fine.

Take it with a grain of salt.
The negative reviews written on this board making claims of malnutirition, breastfeeding problems, and attachment disorders are almost comical! As with any parenting book (or most informative books in general for that matter), Ezzo's "On Becoming Baby Wise" should be taken with a grain of salt. Most sensible readers should have the ability to pick up on the idea that this book is simply a GUIDELINE for new parents on real issues such as creating feeding and sleeping habits, communication, potty training, discipline etc. The book has a very good grasp on parent-centered vs. child-centered parenting and offers solutions that really work to the problems facing most new parents. Before reading this book, I fed my daughter on demand, she slept when she wanted, and seemed to cry all of the time. She was eating for 2 minutes, falling asleep for 10, and waking up hungry again. I was exhausted. At four weeks, when I transitioned her onto the Baby Wise schedule, not only did she develope a managable (and healthier) feeding schedule, she was sleeping through the night in two weeks, and was a much happier baby overall.

Now, three years later, I am reading and following the advice from "Child Wise" (the third book of the series) and my daughter is an absolute joy to be around. She is healthy, developmentally advanced, well-mannered, obedient and happy. I don't agonize over taking her to public places for fear of embarassment, my friends and family call ME to babysit her, and I regularly receive compliments on how well-behaved and enjoyable she is.

Did I follow everything in Ezzo's book to a T? No. But do I give it as a gift with confidence to every new mother as a practical guide for child care and management? ABSOLUTELY!!

Again, taking ANYTHING to an extreme can be dangerous. But taking this book for what it's worth without nit-picking the verbiage to pieces will probably save most new parents from a lot of sleepless nights and headaches.

Wonderful guide for loving parents
As a first time mother, I read many guides in preparation for my baby's arrival. Upon recommendation from many other parents, (several from our chuch) I purchased Baby Wise as another resource. I found this book to be very helpful. It helps parents vear from the beaten path of creating a child without any since of independence. My son has thrived from day one and has been in the 90 percentile on the growth charts from two weeks. He is still nursing well and always sleeps through the night since 12 weeks. We always get comments about what a wonderful baby he is, he is always happy, and is full of smiles everyday. At nine months old, I am thankful I read Baby Wise and continue to recommend it to loving parents who want to give their children the best start. A positive way to have the happiest, healthiest baby of all. The negitive reviews of this book are generally comments of parents who didn't read the book fully for content. Unfortunatly many parents only believe in on demand feeding schedules which make it easier to hush a baby with a bottle at every cry, instead of finding out what is really bothering the baby, such as lack of attention, over stimulation, or other general needs of the little one.

Worked miracles with our TRIPLETS!
Although this book came highly recommended from a friend who had used the Baby Wise method successfully to help their child sleep through the night, I didn't expect anything to work for my newborn triplets. My confidence in the author was boosted however when I read that he was the father of triplets as well! Before implementing the Baby Wise system our triplets were being fed "on demand", and as you might imagine, this resulted in our caring for them 24 hrs a day... Someone always needed to be awake. We implemented the Baby Wise system on a Monday... and by Thursday ALL THREE of my triplets slept THROUGH THE NIGHT! Our lives were saved! Once we put them on a schedule my babies were happier and healthier than ever. They slept better, they ate better and they quickly learned to soothe themselves. Some reviewers of the book have suggested that this method is cruel. I couldn't disagree more. In fact, I believe that making a decision to allow your child to experience a small discomfort in order to improve their life in the long run is what parenting is all about. This book will help get you started developing your lifelong responsibility.

Truly a great book for raising great kids
This book works. Our baby is happy, well fed, and well rested. She is a joy, and people always comment how happy our baby is. People also comment on how well rested we are. Our baby has been sleeping through the night since about 9 weeks. She wakes up every morning cooing and talking in her crib, and she is all smiles when we pick her up. We have a healthy baby.

I have read a lot of the negative reviews about this book, and most of them sound like the typical American couple that allows their child to run the household, rather than the parents doing their jobs correctly. Doing the right thing is not always easy. But doing the right thing is always the best thing. These parents are afraid to let their babies cry a little bit, because they cannot handle conflict. Throughout the child's life, the parents will always give in to the child. That is why America has raised a generation of kids that do not respect their mothers or fathers. It starts at day one.

A big thanks to the Ezzo's. We have a happy, healthy, well loved baby.

On Becoming Baby Wise: Learn How over 500,000 Babies Were
I am the mother of two, and expecting a third. With my first child I nursed on demand, and didn't get more than 2 hours straigt sleep for 6 months. (I finally resorted to breaking that habit, and my heart by letting my baby cry himself back to sleep for about 4 nights in a row.) He was thriving, in the 95th percentile for weight. With my second son I followed the Baby Wise guidelines (I came from a neighborhood of new moms who swore by it) and had a baby who slept through the night at 7 weeks. I never had to listen to him cry himself to sleep, it just happened. He was also much more content during daytime hours. He, too, was thriving, gaining a full pound his first week and four during the first month and always in the 90th percentile range. I'll be using the Baby Wise guidelines with our third. I am surprised that some readers think the authors are telling you to ignore your child. I never got that from reading this book. I understood them to say babies cry for different reasons, don't automatically assume it's hunger, and don't respond with a bottle or breast if hunger isn't what's bothering them. They also write of babies need to play and for companionship, and encourage you and other family members to fulfill these needs. If you want a book that helps you sleep through the night (which I believe is beneficial for baby and mom) by establishing a rather flexible routine, then Baby Wise is for you. If, however, you'd prefer to let your baby make all the demands, and are okay with an erratic schedule (and all the moodiness for baby, mom and dad) which can occur, then maybe this book is not for you.

A Life saver
I am glad I bought and read this book before being tainted by the negative reviews. The first 5 weeks of life with my son were Hell.... He ate every hour, refused to nap, and became unbearable at night, often waking up 4+ times a night. My girlfriend recommended the book and I finally bought it. The key concepts to me are. Flexibility, and hunger cues. Buy no means do I wait to feed my child every 3 hours if he is hungry sooner. But after 2 days on his new routine, he is napping for up to 2 hours. Only getting up once between 10:30 and 5:00, he used to wake at 3, 4, 5, and 6 leaving me absolutely haggered and frustrated because he would not eat more than a half and ounce or sleep for more than a half an hour. Now he eats 2.5 to 3 ounces per feeding, and seems to be much happier for it! I think he was both overtired and hungry-- and he couldn't figure out which to satisfy first. Believe me I tried.

The crying himself to sleep, my rule is no more than 15 minutes which he has yet to make. I cuddle, kiss, play, rock, swing, stroll, etc. with my son, the difference is that his is not screaming during these activities, instead he is smiling. It has been a very difficult transition to motherhood from breast rejection to depression. This book was like an olive branch to me. It gave me the confidence to take charge... to let my baby know that I am his mommy and he does not have to worry, his needs will be met.... I don't think he felt that early on.

Like anything-- you take the bits and pieces that work-- but never let your child go hungry or feel insecure. In fact my son was failing to thrive until I switched to soy based formula and read this book.....

LOVE IT
This book was an absolute lifesaver. A very trusted friend recommended it to me. I was just about to the point where if one more person gave me advice, I was going to scream. I don't know what possessed me to buy this book considering my state of mind at the time, but I'm eternally grateful I did. I started it when my daughter was five weeks old, which I used to think was too old, but I think I'll start with the next one right about the same age. My daughter was sleeping through the night by 12 weeks, thank God! I was able to plan Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas Eve dinner because I knew exactly what time my daughter would be napping. I was able to enjoy meals! I could plan doctor appointments, errands, etc. because I knew what she would be doing and when. Granted, we are all human and no "schedule" is perfect, but this one is as close as they come. This book is written to praise traditional families, family values, morals, prayer and the like. Things that are very important to me. This book was so refreshing to read considering some of the garbage that is on bookshelves today. I loved how it explained things down to the minute. I am the type of person that needs to be told basically how much to feed, when to feed, how long naps should be, etc. Now that my daughter is nine months old, I'm much more confident and can make educated guesses, but when I was a brand new mom, this book was a life saver. In fact, "life saver" doesn't even do it justice. This book is nothing short of a miracle! As your baby starts eating solids, I highly recommend Baby Wise II.

Very useful information on your baby's first year!
Keep in mind that when you look for advice, take it with a grain of salt for heaven's sake!!! The book is not the know- all -end all, however it is extremely insightful in providing ideas and methods that can be extremely helpful when you have a new baby. The idea, as in with anything you read, is to use what makes sense to you and works with your baby. The basic principal of Mr. Ezzo's approach absolutely does work. I used it on my first baby and on my twins!!! Read it, try it, and conform it to your baby. Anyone who criticizes this author should go back and read the book again. Mr. Ezzo clearly defines that everyone's experience is different.
