A "must have" book. Simple, straight-forward and acurate!
This was my first book about canaries. The author does a wonderful job of explaining the basics. The information apears to be very accurate. Judging by the authors love for these birds, I can't imagine going wrong!...THANK YOU MR. von Frisch!

good book for first time owner
When I got my hamster, I checked a half dozen hamster books out of the library. This one and "The Hamster" by Betsy Sikora Siino were the only two I held onto. This book has lots of information about how to handle hamsters, what to feed them, how to house them, how to tell if they're ill, plus info on what to do during vacations, is it OK to take the hamster with you, etc. There are lots of very cute color and black and white hamster pictures. All in all a great book, and intended for recreational pet owners, not breeders -- there's very little info on breeding.

A recommended guide to hamsters
This is a helpful guide if you are interested in keeping hamsters as pets or if you just want to become familiar with them. Written by Otto von Frisch, it was released in 1998. There are 64 pages, and it is in softcover format. Five chapters are included. I like the layout of the manual, the information, and the impressive color photos of the hamsters. There are handy charts, tables, and sidebars. Examples of topics covered are physical characteristics, sensory capabilities, buying a hamster, housing, breeding, handling (seven rules are included, for instance), nutrition (for example, ten important feeding rules are stated), behavior, and health. The tables--which are interspersed throughout--discuss hamster breeds at a glance, hazards for the hamster, and recognizing ailments and illnesses. There is a page that displays the ten golden rules for hamster care along with another page that outlines the hamster's body language. Also, two pages are devoted to an expert who gives answers to the ten most frequently asked questions regarding the keeping of hamsters. I find this to be a useful publication.
A Really Great Hamster Book
Before we got our hamsters, my brother and I decided to order this book so we could better care for our new pets. It was a decision I don't regret. Along with many adorable color photos, this book provides ample information for the new and not-so-new hamster owner. Covering many topics, including feeding, health, care and breeding, it has an FAQ section in the back, and also several comprehensive charts to figure out what to feed your pet, if it is healthy and, if not, what the problem is and how to solve it, and how to figure out what your hamster is trying to tell you. I really can't think of any real problems I have with this book, although the little section on color and breeds doesn't sound like other stuff I've read and I'm not sure if you should feed hansters strawberries. With a perfect mix of photos and easy-to-understand information, this is an interesting and superior pet book which belongs in every hamster owner's library.
REVIEW OF HAMSTERS
THIS BOOK GIVES ALL OF THE INFO. YOU WOULD WANT IF YOU NEEDED IT. AND THE PICTURES ARE IN GREAT COLOR AND DETAILED. I ALSO RECEIVED MY ORDER ON THE EXPECTED DATE.

A good basic manual
This is a well-written book with plenty of photographs, and thoroughly helpful information on raising these amazing little birds (I can attest to this since I have raised them for many years.) He gives good data on all the different canary types, how to feed and care for them, etc.
The only glitch I noticed was that he makes reference to color-fed birds being endangered by "synthetic color substances" without citing data/studies or naming chemicals. This is confusing to a beginner, especially since more than half the photos in his book are of color-fed birds! He doesn't discuss the crucial role the Venezualian red siskin in the formation of "red-factor" canaries, nor of the fact that beta-carotene is essential in both the siskin's diet in the wild and the red-factor's diet in captivity.
A more complete book would be Barron's "New Canary Handbook"; "Coloured,Type and Song Canaries," by Walker and Avon, and of course, Linda Hogan's classic "Canary Tales." The last is still in print and highly recommended.
Excellent up-to-date information. Surprising!
This book was bought on a whim by a canary keeper of many years. It completely rethinks the canary as a pet, revolutionizes care, e.g. your canary will now be flying around your home and is insightful in all sorts of ways. Alas many of the suggested products are no longer readily available in the US where the canary has been falling out of popularity, first to the budgie and now the larger parrots. A strong and enthusiastic recommendation.

Okay
This book has beautiful and entertaining pictures, but I found there to be many problems with the information given. If you are looking for a book with good pictures and fair information this is your book, but otherwise I don't recommend it.
This book tells you EVERYTHING about hamsters!
This book told me everything I needed to know about hamsters. It includes how to select a hamster, how to handle a hamster, what to feed and buy them, how to breed them, and much more! It even includes the history of hamsters, like when and where they were first found! I definitely recommend this book to whoever is planning to buy one of these cute companions.
