insights into an ancient world
This book cannot be recommended highly enough. The Huarochiri manuscript is a 17th century account, in Quechua, of the mythology and rituals of native peoples in the Andean region of Huarochiri. It provides a unique narrative view of the culture of the ancient peoples of the Andes. The translation of the text into english is excellent, and Salomon's introduction and notes go far in making this complex work accessible to the average reader.

Thirteen Emperors
During the lifetime of one of the last of the 13 Inca emperors who controlled parts of western coastal South America between 1200 and 1532, a girl now called Juanita summited Mt Ampato. In the ending months of 1995, nearby volcanic ash melted mountain top ice and snow, putting this mummified ICE MAIDEN OF THE ANDES in the path of mountain explorers Johan Reinhard and Miguel Zarate. The author gives an idea of how difficult high altitude archaeology can be and of how Latin American mummies such as Juanita, El Plomo and Sarita can answer scientific questions, such as verifying that the wart virus existed in the pre-Columbian western hemisphere. So Janet Buell's book reads well with David Getz's FROZEN GIRL, Nova's ICE MUMMIES: FROZEN IN HEAVEN video, Dr Reinhard's DISCOVERING THE INCA ICE MAIDEN, and Susan Vande Griek's A GIFT FOR AMPATO.

Inca & Spaniard: Pizarro and the Conquest of Peru

5 Stars
A very readable book for young adults about the Spanish Conquest of Peru. Marrin describes in vivid detail the daily life of the Incas before the Spanish arrived. A warlike people, the Incas valued toughness, courage and obedience to authority. They were not strangers to capital punishment or torture. Like the Aztecs, they practiced ritual human sacrifice to appease the many gods they worshipped. Although their society was highly organized and technologically advanced, they were not prepared for warfare on European terms. When Pizarro arrived, he kidnapped their leader and held him for a ransom of silver and gold. Without their leader to give them instructions, the Incas were helpless to launch a rescue mission; they had been trained to obey orders, not to think for themselves. For many years the Incas made attempts to resist Spanish rule, but in the end, Spanish greed, weapons, cruelty and disease overtook them. A sorrowful yet valuable account of the Spanish impact on the New World.

Hold onto your seat and enter the "Burn Zone" !
Step into the "Burn Zone" as Val Jon draws you into his personal, internal journey... a journey that is so alive you will feel the presence of everything he is experiencing! Intense moments carry you away as he leads you deliberately yet carefully on and up a winding, narrow, and somewhat dangerous path elevating to the top of Wayna Picchu. Terror in the night quickens his awareness. At some point he tries to find shelter from the bitter wind, and aching cold. The night seems almost endless. But in the endlessness of time he receives visions of key moments in his life. Feeling vulnerable to the elements that surround him and intense fear, he finds himself stepping into the "Burn Zone" and on a spiritual adventure with the Light of the Masters. There he receives the "Seven Dimensions of Knowing". There is no turning back once you have read this book. I experience the journey again and again in my mind. It feels like a part of me. If you never went to Peru you will want to go. If you have been there it will deepen your experience even more! I have had the pleasure to talk to Val Jon. He is deeply sensitive, and deeply caring toward humanity. He has a mission to fulfill, and the energy to get there. Don't stand out in the cold, enter the fire thatwill warm your soul.

Inca Settlement Planning
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (1990)
Author: John Hyslop

Currently, it's the last word on the topic
_Inca Settlement Planning_ is a detailed look at Inka architecture and city planning laid out in series of topical chapters. Writing in a no-nonsense style, Hyslop succeeds in making an esoteric topic pleasant and accessible to a wide audience. Hyslop has visited many of the sites he writes about and the book is liberally illustrated with the author's own photographs as well as diagrams and other graphics. The work is generally well-thought of and should be considered canonical. A steal at the price. Mike Turton

I found this book very helpful in explaining the conquest of Peru by the Spaniards and, most importantly, its historical context and consequences. Furthermore, it was great fun reading.

A GREAT BOOK IF YOU WANT AN INTRODUCTION TO THE INCAS
I read this book because I wanted to get an introduction to Inca history and also because it was published by National Geographic, so I knew it would have tons of pictures.

This book fulfilled my needs. It told the basic history of the Incas before Columbus, during the Conquest by Pizzaaro, and more. I loved looking at the pictures.

If you want a detailed Incan history, go somewhere else. But for a brief overview of history of the Incas, this one can't be beat, because the photographs make the history come to life. I could really visualize what happened in Inca history.

If you liked the Celestine Prophecy, you will love this!!
My wife and I have personally been to the Sipan Project at Huaca Rajada three times. We feel that this book should be brought back in print right away!! Except for actually going to Peru, there is very few sources of factual information about this amazing find. The richest 'dig' in our part of the world EVER!! (began 1987). A story that will bring tears to your eyes, hope to your heart and is an awesome adventure tale that will keep you up all night. Find it, read it ... help to share and preserve the Ancient Cultures of our mutual past.(my actual rating is 22).

Who put the A.I in A.I.? Ian Watson, that's who.
"A.I. Movie Celebration! Congrats Ian Watson! Steven Spielberg's blockbuster movie, A.I. - Artificial Intelligence, was based on a screen story by ...Ian Watson!...If you haven't read Watson's science fiction and horror stories, now is the time to try out the works of this master story teller. From 1990 to 1991, Ian worked full-time with Stanley Kubrick on story development for the A.I. movie. Steven Spielberg then took over production upon Kubrick's death." -From Fictionwise.com

I studied with Peruvianist Edward Putnam Lanning, Ph.D. and Richard Patch, Ph.D. or (was it Hatch) at Stony Brook and at Buffalo universities in New York State. Unfortunately both gentleman are deceased from the rigors of their work there I believe. Joel Grossman, Ph.D. who I worked for was a UNESCO archaeologist in Peru from Berkeley U is not despite "The Shining Path". This book is very good and has a high excitement factor. The annual day of agrarian reform, when the "latifundias" (read "plantations") were broken up in 1969, "The Day of the Condor," was celebrated just a few days ago. Long live the Andean condor and please help support the return of the American condor. This book inspires respect for them and the people of Peru. Free Lori Berenson!
