Very Practical.
Dr. David Simon has done an excellent job in describing ancient Ayurvedic wisdom for well being of body, mind and soul. Dr. Simon has explained in simple modern language the Ayurvedic principles for invigorating body, mind and soul. Although, being an Indian, I was familiar with many of the things stated by the author, the simplicity and clarity of the whole book has value- added to my own understanding of the ancient vedic science. Author has dealt with almost all the methods of reaching the source of vital energy which is available within all of us. Author's suggestions are not only very useful but so pratical that one can use them for one's own benifit without much of complex efforts.
I emphatically suggest everyone read this book, practice the principles told methodically and ENJOY invigorating VITAL ENERGY for body, mind and soul.
Lastly, but not in the least, this book must be kept on the book shelf for day to day reference till the time the principles get thoroughly ingrained in one's own Mind-Body system.

vital energy
I found this book very enlightening and user-friendly. I highly recommend it.

Clear, concise, easy to apply!
Dr. Simon does a marvelous job explaining how to tap into energy that we already have. Simon begins by helping us understand our own natures using "Earth-Wind-Fire" categories. From there, Simon advises on all sorts of areas such as the best types of foods for each elemental type, best type of physical activity, etc. Simon also advises on the importance of meditation and relaxation. Vital Energy is a very interesting and informative read, and a must-have for those who seek to improve their view of life and increase their energy.

INtegrative medicine- isn't about time?
Dr. Eisenberg is one of the poineers of the Integartive medicine in US ( which is a fussion between the conventional and alternative therapies). Western medicine has achieved things that seemed imposible 1-2 centuries ago, but it seems to be stuck with its overly rationalistic approach toward disease...is the body functioning depending from the mind? Can attitude affect one's well- being? Could ther e be somthing that we still do not know about human physiology? Western science is just entering the realm of mind/body medicine( neuroscience), while some nations (like Chinese) have millenia long history of practicing and perfecting those methods of treatment....so why not learn to use those methods? Why not integrate them into conventional western medicine? Partly because the public and the medical proffessionals are not aware of all those options, and also because there is still some stigma in medical society about the alternative practices. Dr. Eisengberg's book disspels part of that stigma in a very easy to read, livelly and plesant style...

A pilgrimage for new solutions for Western medicine
David Eisenberg, MD, embarked upon a pilgrimage under the auspices of Harvard to China to see if ancient medical alternatives hold new promise for Western medicine. His entrepreneurial approach is admirable and opens new possibilities for the West that have been already embraced by hundreds of millions of Chinese in some cases for many centuries. The shift in interest to Oriental medicine in the quest for new alternatives commands attention. The most critical asset for Western minds viewing Oriental medicine would seem to be an open mind. Yes, the West has made great medical strides but we don't have all the answers. Why should Western bias pre-empt potentially viable solutions that have attained credence through the tests of time and strength of following elsewhere? The Afterword in this edition suggests that Americans by the tens of millions are searching for new options, especially when patients face chronic pain thwarted by Western approaches. I congratulate Dr. Eisenberg for his creative approach and imagination and hope that appropriate testing protocol will help validate those remedies that have the greatest potential in the U.S. and elsewhere. The potential upside benefit for the quality of life of millions should drive progress on this frontier emerging in the West.

The Jewish Concept of Reincarnation and Creation: Based on the Writings of Rabbi Chaim Vital

An important source, but not for beginners

Rabbi Chaim Vital was the closest disciple of the great 16th-century kabbalist, Rabbi Isaac Luria, also known as the "Holy Ari (lion) of Safed" or simply as "The Arizal." The Arizal's teachings were all given orally, and he himself wrote very little in print. His faithful disciple, Rabbi Chaim Vital, recorded his master's teachings in several books which have come down to us. One of these is "Sha'ar Gilgulim" (The Gate of Reincarnations,") which forms the basis of the book I am now reviewing. Although "The Gate of Reincarnations" is a fundamental source text for Jewish mystics and scholars, until now, it was only available in Hebrew.

Rabbi Wexelman's book is the first I known of to present substantial amounts of material from "The Gate of Reincarnations" in English. He has also included a second section, "The Kabbalistic Concept of Creation," which is based on two other works by Chaim Vital, the "Sha'ar ha-Hakdamot" and the "Otsrot Hayim." Together, they give a fine presentation of the Arizal's teachings on the spiritual journey of the human soul.

But, as the subtitle says, this book is "based on" the writings of Chaim Vital. As such, it is not a complete word-for-word translation. As Rabbi Wexelman himself states in his introduction, he has "omitted sections that would cause confusion due to problems of translating difficult concepts suitable only for more advanced learners." At the same time, he has also "tried not to distort the meaning and ideas or to add [his] own thoughts on these topics." The result is a redaction that presents the basics of Vital's work in a form that is accessible to the educated English-speaking student of Jewish mysticism. (However, I myself would have prefered a complete translation.)

The book explains the five levels of the human soul, how souls come to be reincarnated, how the 613 mitzvot relate to the 613 parts of the spiritual body, the phenomenon of "ibbur" (temporary benign possession), soulmates, etc. Especially interesting are the sections on "who was who," which trace the various incarnations of biblical and Talmudic personalities, according to the insights of Vital's master, the Arizal. (In addition to being a great kabbalist, the Arizal was also a type of "past-life reader" who could see all the previous incarnations of a person and prescribe the proper "tikkun" or soul correction for each person.)

Make no mistake, however: this is not an intro how-to book on reincarnation. The original text was intended for advanced rabbinic scholars who were already steeped in Jewish law, kabbalah, and Orthodox Jewish practices for many years, and it assumes you have that background. It also assumes a working knowledge of specialized kabbalistic terms in Hebrew, such as the Four Worlds, the Sefirot and their different combinations, levels of the soul, etc. One glaring weakness of the book is that it has no glossary. Nor does it have any biographical materials on the various rabbis who's incarnations are recorded. If you don't already know Jewish history, they are only so many names.

So, I give this book five stars for what it is: a good redaction of an advanced kabbalistic source text in English. As such, it will be very useful to the advanced student. However, for the general reader who doesn't want to plow through so many technical terms, I would recommend Rabbi DovBer Pinson's book, "Reincarnation in Judaism: the Journey of the Soul," instead. Rabbi Pinson's book presents the same ideas, based on the same authentic sources, but in much more accessible language.

Good job
A retired businessman who's always liked Lawrence, I bought this book because I wanted to know all about his "visual imagination," and I was not disappointed. The book, though written by a scholar, is about as lucid as you can get. I especially liked the fresh way it linked how writers and painters "think" in similar ways. I now see novels like "The Rainbow" and "Women in Love" as more interesting. In my opinion you don't have to have a PhD to get a lot out of this book.

Worldwatch wrote it, Now let's read it.
This book focuses briefly on subjects of great importance to all life on earth, mainly ours. It begins with reports of the world's harvest (grain, etc.) and ends with human life expectancy. Some of the information was a little difficult for me to believe, but as I read on I realized that the people who helped put all the facts together are concerned not only for our future, but that of Earth. There are no doubt publications containing greater detail regarding the topics discussed (rapid deforestation, pollution of waterways, unsustainable fish catches and the problems facing our farmers). This book and those of the series seems to be a starting point for us to investigate what's important to each of us. (There are 22 pages of reference notes). Many people put a lot of work into this on a continual basis. This book is good for pointing out how the future looks in 1994. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Healing With Energy
ENERGY MEDICINE is a brilliant, comprehensive and comprehensible book on the many modalities of healing with energy. Donna Eden shows us that by working with energy we can restore harmony on all levels when it is lost. The book provides very specific and easily learned techniques for releasing negative energy and recreating a healthy flow of energy. The book contains ancient and not so ancient practices from all over the world and many helpful suggestions for specific concerns. If you are struggling with a chronic dis-ease this book is full of useful practices that will open the doors to healing. Best of all Donna's example of healing from serious illness shows us that when harmony is restored all is possible. If you are interested in growing in spirit the exercises will help maintain balance and deepen connection to vital life force. I recently attended a lecture given by Donna in Boston. Donna's ebullient joyful spirit, her physical vitality and her loving compassion speak eloquently of what is possible for us all in working to cleanse and strengthen our whole selves. ENERGY MEDICINE is a book that can really help us do just that. I highly recommend.

Essential Energy Healing Reference Book
Donna Eden's book, ENERGY MEDICINE, is a priceless addition to any energy healer's book shelves. In simple language with clear illustrations, Eden outlines ways to release stress, restore energies, escape the grip of fear, concentrate in the midst of fear and stress, feel joyful more often, overcome digestive problems, mend broken arms and legs, overcome nervousness, calm people (and yourself), relieve arthritic pain, relieve muscle cramps, relieve low back pain, and regain control when feeling hysterical.

I would be thrilled with any book that so clearly outlines techniques for helping people with such a wide variety of ailments, aches and pains, but ENERGY MEDICINE goes several steps further. Eden describes the body's energy meridians, chakra balancing, and how to do the "celtic weave". As Eden explains, "The Celtic weave, as an energy system, laces through all your other energy systems and creates a resonance among them. It is the weaver of your force fields. It holds your entire energetic structure together. As an exercise, you use the Celtic weave to pulse your aura's energies outward and to strengthen them. The exercise also connects all your energies together so they operate as a single web. Touch one strand, anywhere, and your whole system reverberates in harmony."

I love the way ENERGY MEDICINE includes a vast assortment of fascinating real-life stories of energy healings that Donna Eden has been involved in, including her own recovery from being bitten by a poisonous insect in Fiji. The shamans in Fiji treated Donna for her bite by burying her up to her neck in sand for long stretches several times over a two day period, believing the toxins would be drained into the sand. Donna recovered her full health in Fiji, and shortly thereafter began her studies of energy healing.

I highly recommend ENERGY MEDICINE to anyone with an interest in energy healing. Experienced energy healers and novices can all find much of great value in this essential reference book.

This exciting book teaches you to heal yourself with energy!
In the foreword to this book, Caroline Myss states "The contribution Donna Eden has made with Energy Medicine will stand as one of the backbone studies as we lay a sound foundation for the field of holistic medicine." I found that Eden's approach to energy medicine is simple, yet amazing.

She incorporates many ancient ways of healing, focusing on Chinese meridian theory, the chakras, the aura, the 5 elements, and four other systems. She explains our multi-layers, how to maintain them, and how to weave all the energy systems together. Her five-minute daily routine for "keeping your energies humming," for instance, is easy to follow and practice yourself.

She also shows how the body is a barometer. Even lack of joy shows up in the body. Eden is a highly developed intuitive, and you will find your own way to heal yourself with the guidance you find in this excellent,well-organized book.

The Future of the Jews
The events of the 1940's forever changed the way in which Jews interacted with each other and the way in which they related to the world. From the horrific events of World War II to the establishment of a Jewish state in Israel, the nature of Jewish interaction and concepts of nationalism was forever altered. In the wake of these new and unprecedented circumstances that the Jewish people have been forced to deal with since the 1940's, it is not surprising that there has been much thought and discussion regarding the future of the Jews. It is this question of what will become of Jewish nationalism in the twenty-first century that David Vital attempts to answer in his work, The Future of the Jews.

A historian of Zionism and professor of history, Professor Vital on a guest teaching assignment in the United States from is home university in Tel Aviv, examines the steep rise in the tensions that exist between a large portion of the Jewish-American public and Israel. Through these observations and his historical background in the Zionist movement, he concludes that the old unity of the Jewish people on the topic of the Jewish nation has been damaged almost to the brink of no repair. This work is an impassioned viewpoint on the state of Israel as the Jewish state and provides an interesting prospective to counter many works that extol the pro-Israel stances of American Jewish organizations. This work is a very passionate, cohesive, and well argued statement on the direction that Professor Vital believes the Jews to be heading. However, it is purposely lacking in supporting material that would bring credibility to the argument. Furthermore the analysis seems, at some points, to suffer from a certain degree of tunnel vision. Despite these limitations this work provides an interesting, historical perspective on this issues and questions of nationalism and statehood that the Jewish people now must contemplate.

Another biased treatment of Jewish diaspora history
I picked up Mr. Vital's book in the hope of finding in it a balanced, scholarly treatment of the much-misunderstood subject of Polish-Jewish relations from the late 19th century up to 1939. Unfortunately, "A People Apart" only repeats the old, ethnocentric, anti-Polish sentiments without even the slightest attempt at objectivity.

One of the most glaring examples of this partisan attitude is the fragment regarding the "pogrom" in Lvov in November 1918 (p.738). There exists a large literature on the subject in Polish, which presents a completely different picture; Mr. Vital supports his scathing condemnation of the Poles with a single quote from a propaganda brochure written by a Jewish author in French!

This selective attitude toward the sources is very visible in the bibliography. Although Mr. Vital's discussion of Polish Jewry takes several hundred pages, and the quoted publications number close to 500, I could find there just one(!) text in Polish, and even this one only tangentially related to the subject. If this was done because of the linguistic difficulties for the non-Polish reader, why quote dozens of works in Hebrew? In any case, Polish authors writing in French or English didn't fare much better (four or five references).

All in all, Mr. Vital's book, although rather monumental in scope, is quite parochial in perspective.

Very Readable
I enjoyed this book in spite of the above review. In fact I was so enthralled I read it in a very short time. The reader should be warned that it is far from a complete history of the Jews in that time period. The author focuses almost entirely on political Jewish nationalism, Jewish socialism, and Zionism. I think that although most European Jews at the time were traditional or orthodox, those that assimilated were a very diverse lot politically, culturally, and socially. Really the book touches on only a small minority of Jews. Mr. Vital's focus and the book's title would have one think otherwise. With those caveats in mind I highly recommend this book.

A Seminal Work
A fantastic book, full of ideas, that will be rewarding even for readers who know quite a bit about Jewish History. Most histories of the Jews in Europe, even those written by Jews, are written from a Eurocentric (Christian) viewpoint, looking at the Jews from the outside. This book is from a Jewish point of view, and makes no apologies. Does anyone remember what happened to the Jews in Europe, and not just during the Third Reich?

This is a demanding book, Vital likes long sentences, but doesn't waste words. Anyone who reads this book will be in a position to think more clearly about the position of the Jews in history and of minorities in the Western world. I wish every intelligent person would read this book.
