Great for Problem Solving!
I am a third grade teacher, and my students love this book! I put a new mystery on the wall outside the classroom door each week. Every schoolday, I have my students trying to problem solve before they ever enter the room. Parents are challenged by these pictures too. At the end of the week, we have a great class discussion on the possibilities to solve these puzzles. I wish there were more than 2 titles to this series!

I like this book
I really liked this book because it was really interesting. I liked the bright pictures. I've read it more than once because I like it so much.

Take more tricks
How to take more tricks as declarer or as defender by playing the odds. Helps you to spot problems that may arise later in the hand. Recommended for all levels.

Fascinating and instructive discussion of card combinations
This book presents excellent, thoroughly explained card combinations in context (for example, a variety of declarer-play problems in which dummy holds Qx of a suit and declarer holds Ax of the same suit, or vice versa). The reader "listens" to the author's train of thought as he plans the play of the hand. It is both fascinating and instructive to see the numerous correct ways to play the same suit combinations, depending on the hand in which they appear. This book is sure to improve anyone's declarer play (unless you're already Zia or Meckstroth), far beyond the how-to of the half-dozen or so suit combinations treated in a collection of about 50 hands. As in all of Lawrence's bridge books, the lessons average to expert players need to learn are clearly and cogently stated.

Think like an expert.
One of the best bridge books ever. Shows how an expert thinks.

RELAX--ENJOY
Yes, you will learn a lot, but oh, so painlessly. Mike has a sly, dry sense of humor mixed with dispassionate common sense that emphasizes the need to size up your opponents. All the technical skill in the world will not save you if you misjudge who is sitting to your right and left. Mike has an enormous ability to get through to the reader what it takes to be effective. I recommend this book and the similar "Play Teams with Mike Lawrence" (my favorite) as an introduction to his more serious books. I own most of them, and through the years I would say every one of them has improved my game, some enormously.

Some years ago I wrote to Mike about a hand that I was proud of the result, but my more traditional player/friends scorned my wizardly thinking. I held S-QJ10, H-XX-D-XX C-A10XXXX. Partner opened one heart. For various systemic reasons the bid 1NT was not available to me. I cleverly bid 1S; confusion reigned, and we received an excellent result--but my purist friends were horrified at my bid. Mike's response to my letter was "did you ever hear of the word 'pass'?" I loved it.

To serious and non-serious bridge players, get this book. It's a treat!

a must read
a must read if you are a real baseball fan, even if you only heard about most of these players from your father ...

Cure for the winter blues
This is the perfect baseball book for all seasons, but especially now with the World Series over, and spring training still months away. It also seems appropriate to me that this book is set during one of the "Golden Ages" of baseball between 1947 and 1964, a time when the only stats that mattered reflected exploits on the field, rather than tallies of bank accounts off the diamond, as we have heard so much about in the past few seasons.

So sit back, curl up in front of the fire, and dip in and out of this massive volume, which is edited and organized in a way that allows just such delights. Packed with stories about the game's greats, and not-so-greats, it offers wonderful insights into how the men who delighted in playing a boy's game actually felt, thought and acted, as told in their own words. There are baseball heroics here aplenty, but also some bitter truths and some all-too human behavior that just serves to make these men all the more real, and fascinating.

Editor and author Danny Peary obviously loves the game, and isn't tainted with the sort of "celebrity awe" that characterizes so much of today's sports' coverage, and its cynical flip-side. Of course, he does pay homage to the greats of this era, but he also rekindles a thousand memories for those of us old enough to remember some of the less celebrated, but nonetheless extraordinary characters who once inhabited the game. Hopefully, younger readers will also delight in meeting these men as well, who had wondrous names such as Vic Power, Minnie Minoso and Pumpsie Green. Need I say more?

Great Resource for Teachers, Leaders/Counselors and Parents
This small, but useful book provides great ideas for non-competitive games that emphasize cooperation and team work. I found the games, particularly circle kickball, to be an excellent game for a birthday party with a co-ed group. The book is clear and concise and should be utilized by teachers, camp counselors, scout leaders and parents. An excellent reference, buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Puzzles for savvy sleuths
Picking up from where he strayed, Lawrence Treat uses clever drawings and witty prose to befuddle the amateur sleuth in this third in his series. His is an excellent series of books that can be adapted for detectives of many ages-- I know because I use them with my students.

Some of the puzzles require good observation, others require sharp wits, and all put a lethally grand combination of pictures and storylines that are fun to read and solve. The questions at the end of each story point sleuths in the right direction.
