Yow!!!
How can you even review the ultimate pirate book of all time? I read it when I was 9 and loved it. I read it again when I was 34 and loved it again! (Actually, I read it several times between, as well.) Long John Silver is arguably one of the most Macchiavellian characters you will ever find between the covers of a book. (I'm mainly reviewing it to raise the average rating. Anyone who thinks this book is boring has to have a screw loose!) From the arrival of the mysterious Billy Bones, to the attack on the inn, to the sea voyage, to the mutiny, to the battle for the island, to the treasure hunt, even to the final fate of John Silver, this book is a stunning rollercoaster of suspense and adventure! I'd give it ten stars if I could.

Here's a bit of information you other readers might enjoy: the meaning of the pirates' song--

Fifteen men on a dead man's chest Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

The real-life pirate, Edward Teach (Blackbeard the Pirate) once marooned 15 of his men on a small island named Dead Man's Chest. He put them ashore with no weapons, equipment or supplies--just a bottle of rum.

Accept No Substitutes!
Giving Treasure Island five stars is like declaring Helen of Troy homecoming queen. It's too little, too late. This is the classic tale of pirates. Its' themes have been worked and worked again, but it remains untouched. Stevenson is a master storyteller at the top of his form. From beginning to end the plot never lags, and the characters possess a richness and depth rare in an adventure story. Every reader of English ought to make their acquaintance--Jim Hawkins,Billy Bones,Old Pew,Silver, and the rest--at some time in his life, preferably when he is young, and his heart still believes it can find that treasure. Treasure Island has been francised, moppetized, filmed, and abridged, but never bettered. Accept no substitues! Read the entire book. There is plenty here for children and adults. Like all great literature,it works on more than one level. Dominating the whole Story is the figure of Long John Silver. As his name implies he has a lunar quality. He is attractive, facinating, powerful, but with a dark side. Again,he is murdering, lying, and infinitly self-seeking,yet like Jim we cannot help liking him and wanting him to like us. At this level Treasure Island is a study in criminality that asks: Why is it that the best, the most full of natural power, often turn their gifts to evil? And why do we find evil so attractive? A word about editions. There are many, but by far the best is the hardcover featuring the illustrations of N.C. Wyeth. No one has succeeded as he has in capturing the spirit of the tale. If you are looking for a cheaper paperback edition that won't blind you with cramped layout, or ruin the whole experience with goofy illustratons, choose the Puffin Classic. It's unabridged, sturdy, and features a beautiful cover illustration.

Real World Writing
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson is by far one of the best adventure stories I have ever read. This book deserves all five stars, it has everything you could ask for such as, suspense, comedy, action, drama and a great plot line. R.L. Stevenson puts a lot of detail into his main characters such as Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins just to name a few. He describes the scenes with such great detail that at times I had to remind myself that it is only a book. I spent more than 2 months reading this book and I enjoyed every part of it. I could RARELY find a paragraph that was dull, the book was very exciting overall. This book is fairly easy to read and I would recommend it to adults and children of all ages. The book moves at a very good pace, not too fast, not too slow. This book is anything but boring, something new happens in every chapter for instance, when Jim witnesses a murder and when he gets into bar fights, those are just some of the many things that happened. I was very surprised myself when I read this book because it seems a little childish but in fact it's quite the contrary. I highly recommend that you go out and read this book!

Out-of-Date Information about a Moving Target
The only way this book can help you is if you first read the latest list of best places to work published in a business magazine. Compare the that list with this one, and then read about the companies in this volume that appear on both lists. That will give you a sense of where the company's environment was back in the early 1990s. That consistency of being a superior place to work increases the likelihood that you will have located a place that will continue to be a good place to work in the future.

As the authors point out, between 1984 (when they published the original research on this subject) and 1994 (when this paperback edition was published) only 55 of the original 100 companies persisted on the list. I suspect that the fallout since 1994 has been even greater. The list contains many companies that went through dire times in the 1990s like Armstrong, Compaq, Cray, Cummins Engine, Donnelly, DuPont, Hewlett-Packard, Inland Steel, Kellogg, 3M, Motorola, J.C. Penney, Tandem, and Xerox. In fact, companies that are riding for a fall in their business peformance are often the ones that have been great places to work. Before its performance plummeted in the early 1990s, IBM used to be on the list . . . just before it laid off an enormous percentage of the total workforce.

So a weakness of this backward-looking research is that it is not very good at predicting what will be the best companies to work for. The list is obviously dominated by very big companies, and they are the ones that offer the least job stability these days, even though the authors try to make the opposite point. "Job security is not a relic of the past for them."

The more obvious point is that for tens of millions of Americans the best employer is themselves. That point is not considered in this book.

The majority of the organizations and companies that will provide the best pay/benefits, opportunities, job security, pride in work/company, openness/fairness, and camaraderie/friendliness (the criteria for selection by the authors) in the next 10 years either were tiny or did not exist in 1994. So you need more contemporary sources for your search.

A good example of the need for newer information is that many companies now encourage you to work at home, due to the Internet. If you want to do that, this book won't help you find those companies. If you want to avoid doing that, this book won't help you avoid those companies.

My main concern about studies like this is that they focus your attention on what your employer can do for you. I suspect that thinking about your personal life goals would be a better starting point. Then, within those goals, what kind of career works best for the future in light of important future trends? Then, what jobs should you consider to develop that career? Next, should you work for someone else or be on your own? Finally, how should you screen potential employers to meet your personal criteria? After you have finished doing all that thinking, I doubt if this book will be very helpful to you.

Don't let the old paradigm of the employer as the source of paternalism and stability distort your judgment of what's right for you!

Make your life a joy by following the road to health, happiness, peace, and prosperity!

Nautical No-No's
This book, with its seventy-nine fun filled illustrated chapters of nautical humor, provides an addition to the technical treatises on learning to sail. It is a "what not to do and what to do when you have done it" approach to the education of a sailor. The pen and ink drawings serve to illustrate the subject matter and enhance the humor.

The pratfalls that are bound to affect anyone who is new to sailing are described in amusing detail and provide a learning experience.

The Heart of Burgundy: A Portrait of the French Countryside
Readers who enjoy fine photography will appreciate the creatively composed and highly crafted photographs from the Burgundy region. Some viewers may find that the page binding cuts in double page prints tend to diminish the quality of those shots. As art should be, the subjects are personal selections of the photographer. The subjects tend to center on vines, leaves, and related compositions. Similarly, the brief introduction (five pages) outlines geological and political factors which influenced the vineyards of Burgundy. Potential travelers to Burgundy will not find this book especially informative and will do well to seek guide books for the region. Likewise, persons seeking information about the wines of Burgundy will do well to seek a reference on specifics of wines and vineyards. This rather is a book for visual entertainment.

A hatchet job
This is unfortunately one of the few books on the subject in English, as it is a dreadful hatchet job, a venomous, mean-spirited attack on Vittorio Emmanuele III and the other members of the Italian royal family. The author stoops so low that he might as well crawl. It is out of print, but copies linger in libraries, ready to poison the minds of the unwary.
