We all know that every American History textbook leaves out lots of important events, people, and things that may well be worth knowing. "The Timetables of American History" is a very useful reference work for those teaching/learning about American History because if you are studying something big like the Civil War or something relatively small like the Scopes Trial, this book shows you what was happening at the same time in science, art and politics. This book can be useful in providing topics for bulletin boards or student reports on any period in American History you happen to be covering. If your history book does not tell you what scientific inventions were developed during the Great Depression, what Americans were reading during the Vietnam War, or who the greatest painter of the early 19th century in the United States, then this is the book you want to add to your reference collection.

A wonderfully concise look at American History in respect to other happenings around the globe. I read this book at our local library and was so impressed with it that I decided to order it from Amazon.com!

I have to say - when I found this book lying around at my parents' place, I never thought I'd pick it up and start reading it. I mean, it's a dictionary for goodness sake! But when I got stuck looking up a word that didn't appear in my regular dictionary, I picked up this little oddity. And trust me, oddity is the right word.

This book had some of the strangest words I'd ever seen, right alongside words I used every day. Luckily, for most of the words I already knew in there, I was using them correctly, but every once in a while I would find something that I'd used often, but used completely incorrectly! The title is definitely not a misnomer.

It's a scary thought, but once I started searching through this thing, I found that I could not put it down. It's a load of fun using it for Balderdash words, and it really is quite informative. If you're stuck on an essay and need a few synonyms, or you just want to make George Orwell turn over in his grave, this book is a must-have.

Honestly, it's a first-rate piece of work!

This is by far the easiest, most thorough, best organized thesaurus I have ever used or owned--and I've tried most of them. I've never seen more synonyms per entry, and it even includes colors, which too many don't.

The book of answers. Answers are what this book gives. It's a collection of all the wise and unwise advice ever given. Easy to use, easy to read and easy to remember what it says. If you were stuck on an island, all you'd need is this gem of a book to get through the emotional turmoil. It's a book you'll never finish, but always enjoy!

Three-toed Sloths is out of print. People interested in number books might like Numerical Intrigue (formerly, Numerical Allusions), by Laurence Urdang.

I had hoped the recent publication date meant this dictionary would be a handy and useful tool. As a check, I referred to words used in my professional activity (gerontology). What I found was distressing. Some of the defintions are not only inaccurate, but perpetuate harmful and dated sterotypes. (e.g, dementia). I am returning this book and would not recommend it to anyone looking for an aid to current usage

I looked up a bunch of definitions relating to mental illness and such, and didn't find anything "offensive." This isn't the full OED that will give you the origins, contextual usage, etc., of a term, so by necessity the definitions are terse. It defined "dementia", for example, as "chronic insanity". What's demeaning about that as a definition? If you want to attack labels, go start with your copy of the DSM-IV and throw out all of modern psychology while you're at it.

I think this book is great for writing a letter. It tells you synonyms in case you use a word often. It also tells you a sentence and sometimes an antonym.(if there is one) This book is handy,and is fairly small. I find this book better than a thesaurus.
