Nice Stories, but not much substance.
I did enjoy this book, and there were some really moving stories and some funny stories, but i didn't find it too terribly filling. Honestly, i personally can't say i'd recommend it. The problem i had with it is that it lacks substance. The stories, while are mostly very nice, do not even attempt (for the most part) to tell the Gospel. And (too) many of the stories had themes that were doctrinally and biblically unsound. I am critical only because it is named "Chicken soup for the CHRISTIAN soul." As a book, it does not bring forth a world view that is terribly Christian. I believe a more apt title would have been "Chicken soup for the God-believing soul." Some may not see a difference, but it's definately there...

"Do you still think it's enough just to believe that there is one God? Well, even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror!" James 2:19 (NLT)

I think a MUCH better book is Joni Earickson Tada's "When God Weeps." That book is also quite moving, but it also contains much Godly wisdom, and makes a conscious effort to show what the bible says about life and death and suffering.

A great book that is very inspirational to the reader.
I love your book and i recommend it to anyone who is devoted to Christ and loves to read inspirational stories about things from the Bible.

You gotta buy this book!
I am still reading this but, it has been just as fun to read as all the others I have read. The short stories are good for me and my hectic schedule and short attention span(I am 25 years old and getting better on the attention part). If I need a little laugh, I go to the funny part, and, every section has a different type of short stories in it. Of course, some will make you feel like crying or touch your soul, some will make you giggle or maybe even burst out laughing if you have had the same experience. The "Family Circus" cartoons are light-hearted ways to look at important things as well. You gotta buy this book!

ehh
I was expecting this book to be more like "The Hiding place" (A very very very good book). I had to stop with two or three chapters left because I couldn't take it any more.

Great sequel to "The Hiding Place"
This sequel to The Hiding Place is a book filled with short chapters which take place all over the world and at different times of Corrie's life. If you haven't yet read The Hiding Place, I recommend that you should read that book first.

Since this book is a collection of short anecdotes, it's not necessary to read it straight through.

I especially enjoyed the chapter entitled "God's Word, the Sword - God's Perfect Weapon". You will be inspired by "One Finger for His Glory" which describes an old woman, crippled with MS, who used one finger to type out translations of the books of Billy Graham, Corrie, and Watchman Nee into her own Russian language.

Please check out my review of "Anywhere He Leads Me", a book of devotionals by Corrie Ten Boom, compiled by Judith Couchman. I highly recommend this book and this book is what got me interested in reading "The Hiding Place".

God bless you!

Read and reread to fully absorb this great book.
This book is probably one of the most influencial Christian books that I have read besides the Bible- and I read a lot. I was struck by her simplicity in response to many questions in life. I was also challenged to live a life where I am walking in God's spirit. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book- but you should really read and re-read the text to let it sink in.

Common Sense Not Needed

Another useless book lost in its own paradigm.
First off, I hope this book never happened. To ingrain philosophy to people with no choice in the matter is wrong, and it is impossible to ask someone's opinion if they don't understand your query. The mentally handicapped, especially autists, have trouble dealing with our world as it is, because they expect many things that we understand to be metaphoric as literal. You cannot teach them religion as Boom suggests using the same metaphoric language we use -- because they will beleive it the way we beleive in mathematics. This is as unfair as lying to children. We know that God will only help those who help themselves, and the reason mental handicaps are so terrifying is they make you unable to help yourself in many instances. If you tell people that only understand language literally that God will help them, they will expect this help in a tangible fashion. It's asking for trouble; it's asking them to give up whenever something seems hard. The justification for learning, for overcoming adversity, is no longer there.

Furthurmore, the books' conclusions are terribly paradigmatic. If you tell somebody something that they can only believe literally, you shouldn't be surprised and consider it amazing when they reiterate your points in a literal manner. To say that we can learn something from this level of idealistic regurgitation is foolishness; may as well feed lines into a computer, or train a parrot to speak aphorisms. It's sad that Boom doesn't try and understand these people, rather than just adapting their view of consciousness to her own. Surely, their perspective is important; after all, they don't doubt the way we do. It is lost in the messy prose and disjoined narrative of this novel, which in my opinion does nothing but degrade both the classical model of thought, the teaching of Christ and the pride of the mentally handicapped.

About humility and God's love for the mentally handicapped
There are stories from this small book I was privileged to read once that still challenge and draw me in... Corrie writes about her work teaching a Bible class to mentally-handicapped children in Holland. She tells wonderful stories about how God revealed Himself very personally and simply to the children, how they understood and responded to His love, and how valuable they are to Him personally. She contrasts that with the Nazis' opinion of the mentally handicapped. There are children in that small book that I myself long to be more like, in the simplicity of their devotion and love for Jesus.

Marching Orders for End Time
I was disappointed in this book, compared to the other books I read, by Corrie. I could not understand why I was not receiving it, until I read a comment today, from the archives where her material is stored (one place anyway). The comment said she became aware of the Charasmatic movement and realized her gift of casting out demons and was later mostly supported by Pentecostals. I am not against any Christian religion, but I do not accept certain principles of other religions, one being spiritual warfare. I do believe there is a Devil and demons, but, I do not believe in focusing on them. I believe all our focus should be on Jesus. So, I will not spend my time worrying about "attacks of the enemy", when he is already conquered by Jesus and all we have to do is press into Jesus' word, the Bible. That is how we resist the enemy, for the enemy to flee. Some people feel called to this type of ministry, and may feel this is right for them. But, it is not for me, so I enjoyed her earlier books alot more than this one.
