This is a coffee-table book you want to take to bed with you! The photos are stunning (as they were in the prequel, Wild by Law) but the stories are so compelling you can't put it down. The book details some of the struggles Earthjustice, the leading non-profit environmental law firm, has had fighting the good fight for civic groups, indigenous folks, and others unlucky enough to be caught in the crossfire when the bad guys try to do their nasty deeds. It reads like a detective novel, but better illustrated!

Justice On Earth: Earthjustice And The People It Has Served by Tom Turner (Earthjustice Senior Editor) is a compelling collection of true stories about the endless battles to protect the earth from the depredations of big and small businesses. Illustrated with numerous full-color photographs, the informed and informative text recounts legal battles of the environmentally oriented Earthjustice legal organization, the centuries of history leading up to these often seminal litigations, as well as the very people and places that devoted public servants struggle to protect. Justice On Earth is a highly recommended addition to any personal, academic, or community library Environmental Issues reference collection or reading list.

Reading Turner's recent book, Justice on Earth, made me go back & reread Wild by Law, the first to detail the work of Earthjustice, the leading non-profit environmental law firm. In this book, Turner teamed up with noted wildlife photog Clifton Carr and the results are stunning - gripping text detailed by exquisite photos. The story starts with how Earthjustice got started (as Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund) with a group of lawyers who ended up setting the precedent for citizen participation in environmental issues way back in the '70s. It then covers the US, region by region, with great stories of various cases. Turner's way of spinning the tale makes this more like a Grishom novel than a legal brief.

Development has swallowed up so many beautiful places that caring about the environment can become a depressing pastime. Fortunately, the good guys have won some striking victories(at least temporarily), and this beautifully illustrated volume tells some of the details.

There are seven chapters, each focused on a specific region or issue.

Chapter One covers Mineral King valley (California)and the birth of the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund whose landmark Supremem Court case protected this part of Sequoia National Park from a massive development proposed by the Walt Disney corporation.

Chapter Two is about Admiralty Island (Alaska).

Chapter Three describes the politics of energy on the Colorado Plateau, including several national parks in Utah.

Chapter Four covers Redwood National Park (California).

Endangered species are the focus of Chapter Five. It ranges over a wide geographic area including pigeon guillemots in California, Palilas in Hawaii, Murres in the Falloron Islands, dusky dolphins off the coast of Patagonia, humpbacked whales in Alaska, red-cockaded woodpeckers in southeastern forests and the famous northern spotted owl of the Pacific Northwest.

Chapter Six describes legal battles in the Northern Rockies, including clashes with James Watt, Ronald Reagan's choice for Secretary of the Interior.

Chapter Seven includes four battles in the Eastern United States: Lake George (New York), Big Cypress and the Everglades (Florida), Hoosier National Forest (Indiana), and Canaan Valley (West Virginia).

This book is a great gift for anyone who is interested in the preservation of wild places.

This is a very well written book covering topics that are more advanced than the usual beginners book. Topics are covered very clearly, and are written in a manner that will help anyone in their progression of using and administrating Caldera OpenLinux. A natural order of progression is used, and the examples are written to show how the syntax of commands are used. This book actually covers topics beyond the subject, such as TCP/IP networking, bridged environments, routing protocols, packet structure and OSI models. A quite worthwhile investment, and a must have for anyone administrating Linux.

If you are looking for a book to bridge the gap between a beginner at linux and an admin this the the book to buy. And that is precisely the problem. This book assumes a fair amount of knowledge about linux. if you do have this level of knowledge, this book will bring you up to the level of a beginner admin, at which point you will have to go out and buy books on topics like Apache, Networking and so on. If however, you are prepared to read through some 1000 pages, and then an armful of other books, HOWTOs and man pages you will not be disappointed.

I would suggest this book to all Red Hat users who are bored with the beginner books and are looking to expand their knowledge of linux. The system admin information contained in this book is useful in the "real world". Thumbs up!

Exceptionally informative, well presented and very highly recommended, Red Hat Linux System Administration Unleashed shows readers how to configure and manage a Linux system to keep it running optimally in a 24x7 environment. The book covers advanced topics such as RAID, customizing the kernel, and hacker security. Readers will also learn the issues and skills related to running Red Hat Linux with other operating systems, internetworking Linux in a network setting with a large user base. Intermediate - Advanced, 1100 pages.

This book is the least helpful OB text I've ever read. It is limited on info, silent on treatments, and out-of-date. Lots of good drawings, but save your cash, and your time.

I would reccomend this book to anyone Who is not only interested in being a doctor, but anyone that really wants to know what child birth is all about. The drawings are excellent and the author gets right to the point without a lot of excess verbage. This book would be a plus to anyones library.

How in the world are we supposed to order a book that is listed as: No price is given? I have seen it at the local CSAA office in Auburn, but am reluctant to purchase it anywhere, when it is controlled the way it is.

This book is a beautifully produced pictoral voyage through scenic Northern-California and the coming of the automobile to the West. "Spirit of the Road" includes hundreds of great photos, sure to amaze any car enhusiast or California loyalist, backed up by captivating text, to boot. One of the best gifts I've ever received. As a recent western transplant from New Jersey, rarely does a night go by that I don't pick it up from off of my coffee table and finger through the pages to check out archival and color photos that never cease to impress me, no matter how many times I see them. If you love cars or if you love California, and especially if you're a fan of both, this is a fantastic volume!

The book dishes out Ted Turner's wisdom, but leaves an important fact neglected: after becoming rich, Ted Turner's mind cracked and slipped away into bipolar disorder, and since then Turner has been running around making boneheaded comments about Christianity, concocting oddly New Age and semi-delusional programs like "Capt. Planet," and using his money to give himself a platform to be a [fool] in front of the United Nations (where he gave a speech about how monotheistic religions should be abandoned because, well, human beings put their pants on one leg at a time) and Brown University (where he extolled the Sept. 11 hijackers as visionaries and courageous men). The true story of Ted Turner ranks with the tragic tales of Howard Hughes and John Nash, once-brilliant men whose lives were ruined by mental illness. It's amazing that Ted Turner has been able to use his wealth to propogate bizarre ideologies that come straight from his diseased, psychotic mind, and no one has had the courage to point out that Turner is afflicted with a psychotic disorder and his New Age, so-called "humanistic" ideas are really just delusions brought on by a chemical imbalance. Of course, Fox News routinely lets us know all the [foolish] things Ted Turner says...
