3rd generation reader loves this story
This is my grandmother's favorite book. She wanted to share it with me, but since she loves this book so and can't part with her copy, she found me a paperback copy at a rummage sale. I admit, I looked at the cover and thought, "well, I'll read it if I have some extra time on my hands." Over New Years, I was quite bored and so I picked the book up. I couldn't put it down! Ms. Turnbull's writing, though the book was written in the 1920's, was captivating. The story of Jeannie could give any current historical fiction writer a run for their money. Absoulutely fascinating and endearing. I will be holding on to my copy for sure!

My most treasured book
I first read this book in the 1950's, as a young girl in Western Pennsylvania, and I have read it over again many times since. As I write this, my husband is reading the final pages...and he loves it just as much as I always have. Ms Turnbull's ability to eloquently and palpably convey the sense of place and time just leaves the reader breathless as he or she is transported there.

Further, the author has an intelligent objectivity about the issues addressed, making no value judgments of her own and not leaving the reader with the sense that the author is leading to any ineluctable conclusion.

This is a wonderful story! Read it! (If you can't locate a copy, try the Westmoreland County Historical Society in Greensburg, PA. That's where I purchased the two copies I have.)

Outstanding, to be treasured and reread often
This was my mother's favorite book when she was a teenager; she couldn't wait to have children and share the book with them. My sister and I have read this book three or more times apiece, it is that good, that heartfelt. It is timeless in its story of families, family ties, families coping with adversity. What a wonderful book!

A charming romance of pioneer life in Western Pennsylvania.
The scene is Hannahstown,Pennsylvania, a "day's ride" from Pittsburgh, where the story begins in the bleak winter of 1777.

This novel combines details of the daily life of a pioneer family with actual characters from the history of the area. It is recommended reading for anyone who has "roots" in early American settlements and wishes to enrich their understanding of the trials of their pioneer ancestors.

Agnes Sligh Turnbull has authored many short stories and articles. The Rolling Years,Remember the End, The Wedding Bargain, and Many a Green Isle are other novels by the author which are worth reading. But, The Day Must Dawn has always been one of my favorites.

One of the best historical novels I've read
This historical novel is centered around the burning of an actual village in Western PA by indians in July of 1782.(About 40 min.fm Pittsburgh) The town is an historical landmark which you can visit complete with guided tours. It was the site of the first courthouse west of the Allegheny Mountains during westward expansion.

Agnes Turnbull, The Nightingale
This is one of several wonderful books written by Agnes Turnbull. Unlike Mystery/Romance books of today, which leave nothing to imagination, her stories are rich and full yet suitable for all audiences to read. The Nightingale is a story about a young woman, a teacher, who's family have all passed on. Knowing that her teaching salary would not be sufficient to handle her expenses, she faces the hard reality of decision making and chooses to open her home to borders rather than to rush into a marriage which is not based on true love. It is in this situation that the richness of the town and it's characters are brought to light along with the mysteries and romance of "the nightingale".

Heart-warming!
This is a beautiful story. The daily life of a minister and his family are realistically portrayed in this tale. It will make you laugh and cry. It may remind you of Thorton Wilder's "Our Town."

It was a wonderful & inspirational story.
What a wonderful book! I came upon it by accident, & I am so very glad that I took that first glance which drew me in. Not only is it a well written story, but the overall message is also a good one --- to be satisfied & succeed in whatever position God puts you in. The characters were so believable & so very likable. I hope to own a copy to read again & again, & I would love to be able to read anything else Ms. Turnbull has written.

A book for all seasons
This is a book about family ties, the heartaches and joys of a turn of the century family in Penn sylvania. The father is a minister who sees good in everyone. Mom is a stay at home mom and the children are like kids everywhere. The book takes us into the small village of Ladykirk where the inhabitants "drink from the same cup" of joys and sorrws. Things happen in Ladykirk, but as one person says "they have a way of settling down again." The characters come alive and make you want to be there to help when Lucy is expecting her beau and cries over the ragged carpet. Her father tells her that young men do not notice those things. Mary, the mom and the one with the sweet spirit, "hates the heathen" when asked to give up her birthday surprise but promises to try to grow in grace. This is a beautiful book. Read it if you can

Entertaining
I wonder why there are no reviews or Kirkus reviews on this book.Written in 1974, it is the story of a man and his land, inherited from his father. He has 2 younger brothers who work with him and hang in throughtout the book. He, Jim, marries Peggy and they produce one and then another baby. There is a mystery with Duncan who came to live with them some years ago, is a wonderful person, but has a shsde hanging over him which is not solved until the end. Peggy has problems and Phoebe enters the picture. things work out in the end and I would not read it again. Sorry, AT
