I looked at many different American History surveys and this is my favorite by far. On the other hand, if you already know the main outlines of American History, and want detailed analyses of particular periods, then this book will not be as helpful, as it is merely an overview and the bibliography is not very detailed or well annotated.

Here's the novel that introduced to the world the character of Hannibal Lecter, the highly intelligent, evil, witty, charming man-eater that played a large part in the two follow up novels, The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. However, Thomas Harris' RED DRAGON was not about Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Instead, it centered round Will Graham, a man with demons of his own, and who helped put Dr. Hannibal behind bars.
Will is called out of retirement by the FBI to help solve a serial murder case. Two families have been murdered, and they think that only Will has the knack to help them find the killer. Will takes the case, despite his wife and stepson's objections, and takes up temporary residence in Georgia, where the 2nd family, The Leeds', were murdered. As he does a walk through of the family's home, he slowly sees how they were killed. His highly intuitive mind is able to recreate each individual murder. The murders are gruesome, and Harris does not hold back with the descriptions of each family member found dead in the house.
While the movie let the audience try to guess who the murderer was during the early parts of the film, Harris tells the reader who murdered the two families within the first 100 pages. Francis Dolarhyde is a shy man who works for a film developing company called Gateway Film Laboratory. He's got access to hundreds of home videos that come through their labs to be processed, and is then sent back to their original families. An early scene of Dolarhyde finds him watching one of these home made videos, but he has spliced it with his own videos: the murders of these same families. He watches these over and over, turned on by the gruesome scenes that show him modeling with the dead carcasses in front of the camera.
As the story progresses, Will visits Hannibal Lecter, who is now doing jail-time in maximum security. With the help of Lecter's cunning mind, Will slowly finds the trail that leads him to Dolarhyde.
Thomas Harris created a great monster in Hannibal Lecter but the stars of RED DRAGON are Francis Dolarhyde and Will Graham. Harris created two very developed characters, giving the reader insight to what made both men tick. A lot of flashbacks help the reader understand why Dolarhyde became the monster that he was in the present, and oddly enough, I felt a lot of pity and sympathy for this serial killer. I found that I did not like the Will Graham character that Thomas Harris created in his book, preferring the movie version better. Not that I found myself rooting for the killer, but it was an odd sensation finding myself liking a mass murderer and wishing that someone would save him.
Overall, I enjoyed this fast pace murder mystery. For those of the faint-of-heart, this book is not recommended. For those who love a great gory murder book, this is for you!
In Reviewing Thomas Harris' Red Dragon, I found it to be a riveting, clever, and highly believable story that would appeal to adults and older teens. The book captures the reader's attention on the very first page and holds it to the very last page. But more than simply holding the reader's attention, Red Dragon takes the reader on a multi-emotional ride that the reader cannot wait to start again after the last page is turned. Red Dragon is the story of, forensic expert, Will Graham's quest to capture a terrifying serial killer that hideously bites, tortures, and murders entire families. Graham enlists the help of the now jailed (but still dangerous) Dr. Hannibal Lecter to solve the murders, but that choice may prove to be a deadly mistake. The story is clever in that the forensic reconstruction of the murderer's actions is logical and believable. The behaviors of the criminal investigators, psychopathic killer, and the reporters are very realistic. I felt as if I was actually witnessing the events as they unfolded rather than simply reading a story. Finally, the way in which Harris takes the reader along with the forensic expert to solve the murders makes the reader feel as if he/she is actually "on the job" of the investigation. The reader then finds out about the serial killer's life and understands how he came to be such a monster. For a brief moment, I even felt compassion for him. Red Dragon is a must read for anyone who likes mental puzzles, is interested in the human psyche, and/or simply likes an emotional thrill ride. It will let you see through the eyes of the forensic expert and let you into the mind of the serial killer. Red Dragon is so realistic that the reader will forget that the story is only fiction.
Will Graham an Ex-FBI Special Agent returns to help the FBI to catch a serial killer. Even thought this sounds generic - Graham must battle the demons that he has come to carry with him as he pursues the killer. Graham's distinction and the reason he left the FBI was because of Hannibal Lecter. Graham was the agent who solved/stumbled onto him and was injured in the process of the capture. In an act of cleansing his soul - he must meet with Hannibal to solve his current case.
One of the most provoking things about this book is that we enter into the psyche of the killer and we listen as he thinks and speaks to himself. I found myself feeling sorry for this killer as I continued to read - but his actions are to barbaric and gruesome to forgive. We are introduced to Hannibal Lecter in this book. It is hard to not hear Sir Anthony Hopkins's voice as Hannibal when you read his passages in the story. Hannibal has a small role in the actual book - but plays a major part through-out the story line. Hannibal is still as evil as ever.
The movie Manhunter is based upon this book and the movie does a good job at adapting it to the big screen.
A book like this shouldn't make you say, wow with capital letters, "life" should.
I agree with Helena..."not a WOW book."
WOW, meaning a knockout; hit; great achievement and masterstroke.
This book is a masterstroke!
As a serious student of both Pynchon and the philosophy of science, I feel Mr Brownlie's book is a breath of fresh air. Rarely have I encountered a writer with such breadth of knowledge combined with the courage to take on established views.
