A wild and fantastic read!
I read this book a while ago, and when I lost it, a good friend bought me a new copy from Amazon. The story is grabbing, the scenes are believable, though I wish there had been a few more 'adventures", but all in all, one good read. The fact that it is set during the Revolutionary War, makes it even wilder and exciting. You won't be disappointed, believe me!

This book has to be the best medieval gay book in a while.
The book chronicles the life of a Frenchman that his been ordered to be the protector of the French King Henry. The circumstances surrounding the protagnists newfound interest to the royal family is intriguing throughout the novel. The novel also includes real historical events to make the novel all the more plausible.

Must have!
This is a wonderful classic of non-fiction in the "BDSM" world. Interwoven with snippets of erotica, Townsend explores the safety and reality of gay male "BDSM". Useful for any man who is a bottom and for those who enjoy them. My own copy has a bit of an update on AIDS but this book should be supplemented with current safety and health materials.

Not for the faint of stomach or heart
This novel follows two brothers into the world of sexual slavery, a world they thought was make believe but which becomes all too real when they are kidnapped and sold on the Arab market. There is a lot of intense torture, both physical and mental, as well as incest in various forms in this book so be forewarned. The story is told in three parts: the encounter that leads them into slavery, the challenge of surviving slavery, and their rescue and reconnection to their father.

Not one of his best
I expected so much from Townsend after reading a few of his other stories. However, there is less bdsm content than I expected and more political/social commentary. Not a bad thing if one is more aware of the politics and social environment of the gay community in the 1970s but hard to follow and identify with otherwise. I had difficulty empathizing with any of the characters -- perhaps part of that lies with the fact that there are so many characters in the story. However, there are several hot scenes in the book and therefore it may be worth the time and money to purchase the book.

First rate slow paced account
A first person account of a guy looking to explore his long-surpressed desire to submit to other men and their desires to beat, spank, and torture their partners. Not as explicit as I would like, not as much of a "page turner" as I would like, but some first rate passages, and a likeable, realistic, where-is-he-whne-i-need-him protagonist.

Different strokes for different folks.
Yikes! Unlikable characters and scenes of S & M (sorry, SM to the initiated) compose this L.A. story of gay-bashing and murder during the 1992 riots which followed the Rodney King trial acquittals.
Rather than a mystery this novel is devoted to rationalizing the appeal sado-masochism holds for some homosexual men. And to gratifying that -- er -- need.
I've read Townsend's Bruce MacLeod mysteries and found them mildly amusing, but I'm not comfortable with the the SM gig. Better drawn or more appealing characters would have made this more palatable. But the essentail missing ingredients are suspense and mystery.

So-so
This book was all right, but I really wasn't blown away by it or anything. The plot was a wee bit flimsy, even for porn (which is going some). The writing style was good, though the content was mediocre. If I might make a suggestion, I liked Derek Adams' "The Mark of the Wolf" much better, both for plot and for erotic content.

A waste of paper!
As a gay man I enjoy sci-fi erotica, but this book was a waste of paper. It seems that the author had an idea to have sex in ancient Egypt and not enough imagination to write a good story. Leave this one on the shelf.
Save your money.
I purchased this book only because of nice title and seems-to-be-hot storyline. When I began to read the first chapter I wanted to kick myself! If you're interested in homosexual / bisexual erotica, I would rather recommend Anne Rice's , but not this rubbish.
Bland
Townsend has done MUCH better... I found the story flat and dull.
