Enlightening, delightful read
Mark's assessment of how gay men grow, evolve, and eventually survive in the world is right-on. Gay Body is an incredibly well written account, full of poetic and historical references that have been all too often left out of contemporary accounts of male homosexuality. Gay men have a rich and varied cultural history that Mark so vividly recreates in his book.

It's not very often that I pick-up a book and read it right through without putting it down; Thompson's Gay Body was an exception.

Good resource
I happened upon this title in my college town's used book-store and even though I had read (and owned) previous historical accounts of the GLBT movmenet, I was drawn to the fluid layout of the book.

Befiting the sponsoring magazine's name, this book does not simply chronicle the past, but inspires readers to become contributors for a better future. Also helpful is the concious decision to focus on events in the entire country, as opposed to only the East and West Coasts.

The only problem I had with the book was the selective ommission of interviews towards the present day. In 1993, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain vocally expressed his support for GLBT freedom/opposition to Oregon's homophobic Ballot Measure 9 (among other progressive views) in a cover-story/interview, but nothing was mentioned about his influence on our generation in a time when the right was flush with zeal attempting these strategies, themselves trying to influence the youth vote.

One on One with Jack Welch
Published in Audio CD by NPBI (01 May, 2002)
Authors: Mark Thompson and Richard Wilson
Amazon base price: $17.99
Average review score:

Disappointing.
This was my first "Jack Welch" Book/CD purchase. I bought this based on the first two reviews and was very disappointed. Reasons: 1) Way to short. 2) Nothing here that I didn't know or for most management types wouldn't already practice based on common sense. 3) I felt this CD was really a product plug for other Mark Thompson, Richard Wilson products. Especially at the end of the CD when they plug their stuff. 4) Jack is hard to understand, his voice is rough and his pronunciation is not clear. It is probably worth 2 stars, but I had to try and off-set the over-rated reviews. Are the first two reviews by the authors?

MBA on steroids
Forget everything you've heard or read about Jack Welch. This is by far the best way to capture the freshest insights from the man himself all in under an hour. One-on-One with Jack Welch is like getting the best of your MBA over lunch.

Best Jack Welch Audio
People either seem to love or hate Jack Welch. I happen to be a fan. He built GE into world power house and in this interview he gives most of the principles that were his foundation.

I greatly preferred this audio book over the others I've heard. Instead of someone else talking about Jack, or him reading his book to you, you actually get to hear him talking and telling his stories in a realistic conversation.

The rapport between the interviewer and Jack was good. The informal style made it quite listenable. The short segments made it easy to listen to while I commute.

Overall an excellent choice.

out of date and poorly organized
This book was helpful to me, in contrast to what the other negative reviewers have said, but I probably could have gotten the same info from the Microsoft online help if I had looked there. I was appalled at how outdated this book was when I got it 2 years ago (Summer 2000). The advances in home networking hardware were significant and just not mentioned in this book. I have an auto-sensing switch - a choice you would never come to from this book.

The book has two authors, but either they didn't talk to eachother or there were many others involved that didn't get cover credit. There is one place where they talk about filling in the identification tab of your network applet, but it's many pages later where they tell you how to make sure that the identification tab will actually be there to fill in! At the end of one chapter there is a quick overview of why you should do backups, but they don't bother to mention that there is a whole chapter devoted to backups later in the book!!!

Finally, one big personal complaint: can all the stupid humor! Every chapter and section has to be humorous somehow, but this is at the cost of being clear and informative to the reader. I may be an "idiot", so don't confuse me with titles like "Sunny and share".

Not that great!!!
A good source for general information about home networking but it definitely lacks all the little details and the necessary information about installation. You could get the same type of information by simply consulting Microsoft help and support. Sadly, the book left me with a lot of unanswered question. I would not recommend it!

Essential for the home networker, interesting for the pro.
On the whole, this book is quite succinct and well written. It covers a lot of ground and because it's new, it can update the professional on the latest in connecting your home as well as serve to teach the novice about home networking.

With the advent of free PC's, the convergence of PC's and TV's and the onslaught of personal digital assistants, together with a growing number of protocols serving these devices, the underlying home networking architecture is an inevitability.

I liked the paragraph on connecting speed (P66) where the authors are trying to explain the importance of speed. They say that it " . . . doesn't just allow you to do what you would normally do faster, it allows you to do different things." You could have this as the underlying theme of the book because by networking your home you are going to be able to do what you couldn't before.

At the end of the book the authors share their vision of the future home. I particularly agree with a few of their statements: " . . . the average homebuyer will be far less tolerant than corporate network administrators." (P. 260) and "The line between home and office will continue to blur in the next millenium. In many cases, the technical capabilities of home offices will exceed those of corporate offices." (P. 262)

One thing they didn't stress was the effect home networking will have on those living in isolated regions. In fact, in generations to come, these country folk will end up with some better services than the rest of us.

Complete Crumb: Mr. Natural Committed to a Mental Institution
Published in Paperback by Fantagraphics Books (1995)
Authors: Robert Crumb, Gary Groth, and Mark Thompson
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

The Crumb
This is not his good stuff. It is marketted fluff using his name. There are some good collections, but don't buy anything by this publisher.

Crumb Fans Rejoice
This series is called the "Complete Crumb" for a reason. It is a collection of his complete works. As a result, some people who enjoy some of his work might not enjoy all of his work, but different strokes for different folks. Only the most diehard fan will find 100% of Crumb's works enjoyable. However, anyone buying this series is most likely already a diehard fan, and more casual readers can try out his regular format books quite cheaply to get a taste of his style or buy a more thematic collection to play it safe. As usual, Fantagraphics has published a collection living up to its extremely high standards of quality with excellent printing and reproduction values that will be treasured by fans of the comic arts.

Warning
This book is not meant for the beginner and intermediate programer. The author intended this book for the elite. Don't buy this book if you don't have a background in Discrete Math or have Master the c language. Wouldn't not recommend this book to colleges who have a Data Structures class for undergraduates. The code in the book assumes that you can piece together the individual functions to write a full program in c. Also There is no problems that a student can try on his/her own and then find the answer in back of book.

Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis
this book provides a concise and fundamental look into algorithms. Excellent book if you want to learn performance time and running time on your written code and gives you the technique to speed up your code. It does not focus too much on what kind of programming language you use and it is to be read in a general sense.

The Sculpture of David Smith
When David Smith died in 1966 he left his own personal field of dreams at his home/studio in upstate New York. Over 80 gigantic sculptures populated the grounds, pitting man against nature and daring to compete in size and moxie with the mountains around them.

After an initial flirtation with New York City, Smith retreated to the solitude of the Adirondacks. These mountains formed a somber monumental backdrop to the brooding nature of the artist. The sculptures were the landscape of his imagination, his spiritual domain, and his homage to the majesty of being human. Additionally, Smith created drawings, paintings and collages that filled his home with the living presence of art.

This is a lavish book that clearly reflects the artist's magnificent obsessions.

Kaleidoscope
Chapters grouped by genre or theme rather than by culture group. Nonfiction in "Arts," "Ceremonies and Celebrations," "People to Know" and "Places to Go" are some the themes the books centers on. A valuable resource if you need to know about ways to use multicultural literature in the classroom. Fiction areas are divided mainly by grade level.
