It's not just about a bear!
I have used this book for five or six years as a storyreader in schools all over the east coast. It is a story of freedom and justice, love and compassion and has sparked some marvelous discussions in 4th,5th and 6th grades. A warm story of an angry man who befriends a misused bear and sets him free and in that act frees himself of his own anger and mistrust. I love this book!!

A Serious, Scholarly Study
Dr. Blakmore's analysis of these political writings is very insightful. He uncovers the intertextual conflicts, in particular between Burke and Wollstonecraft, and provides an indepth literary analysis of both. His diction is sofisticated, yet approachable to an average student of 18th Cent. Literature. A must read for anyone interested in the political philosophy of the Age of Englightment.

Charpentier: One of the most excellent composers France had
Cessac book on M.-A. Charpentier is a wonderful text. It gives a sense of the man, from the very limited sources available. It gives a careful discussion of most of his compositions, by genre. It is beautifully and poignantly written. A Charpentier devotee since 1973, I have read and reread many parts of the book since it was published in 1995. It is a must for Charpentier admirers as well as those interested in French baroque musique more broadly.

Excellent story!
We just love this book and the other by the same authors What if?. The illustrations are expressive, the story is thoughtful and full of tidbits of information for the children. Best of all the parents in the story are loving and supportive of their little monster. I would reccommend this one highly, and will buy it for friends and family.

Our French-Canadian Ancestors: The Role of the Church in New France

Excellent genealogical resource
Our French Canadian Ancestors volume 3 has been an excellent resource series addition to my growing library. This volume covers the history of the church in early Canada/New France. It also included a history of the derivation of French/Canadian names, including 5 categories that many came from. It's always great to be able to find links to my family tree, along with biographical, geographical, social information about the times, occupations and location of my ancestors. Don't miss it.

Passport's Illustrated guide to Normandy, 2d edition
This is an in-depth guide to Normandy, France with excellent maps and color photographs, descriptions of sites to see with detailed and practical information, historical notes, and suggestions. Reasonably comprehensive at reasonable cost for a regional guide, but as far as accommodations go, only lists chains, not specific hotels.

An outstanding photographic documentary of modern Paris.
This photographic survey of the Seine examines the structures and spaces of Paris, focussing on the architectural styles of the city and examining both old and new sites. Changing Paris is an artistic rendering of Paris architecture which could also have been featured in our 'art' section but deserves mention here also as a special documentary of modern Paris.

The Postmodern Explained: Correspondence 1982-1985

Perceiving the Modern
As a hard-core modernist, I've been puzzled by this whole postmodern phenomena, which, to me, seemed impenetrable, so the title of this book caught my eye. Further, Lyotard has been called the theoretician of the postmodern, hence this book seemed like a good place to start trying to understand the postmodern. The book contains an afterward by Wlad Godzich that I found to be extremely helpful (read it first). I cannot claim to understand the postmodern, even after reading this book, but I have some insight into how it can make us more aware of the modern, which is characterized by a belief in universals and the project of improvement and emancipation of all humanity from bondage. Legitimacy for the actions toward that end was believed to stem from the Idea of this ultimate condition. However, 20th Century history has cast doubt on both the theoretical underpinnings (legitimacy) and practice of progress (how could the modern project have led to Auschwitz?). It is this doubt that created a postmodern awareness. 'Post' not in the sense of following, but in the sense of complexity subsuming and overwhelming the naive (unexamined) nature of this long standing project of progress.
