subtle text, delightfully interesting illustrations
The Adventures of Dudley Dormouse is a wonderful book about a cute little mouse living in the English countryside. With each story, there are illustrations which show a deeper story going on and my children loved to point out what it was. For example, in "Dudley and the Strawberry Shake" Dudley goes strawberry picking. He finds an extra large strawberry that he tries to take home for lunch, but it won't come off. What the text doesn't describe is that it is actually the nose of a dog who is sleeping, camouflaged under the hedge. The dog wakes up, startled, and shakes his head vigoursly to get Dudley off and he goes flying through the air and lands on the grass with a bump. "What an odd strawberry." Thinks Dudley. We loved it. There are also many little details in the illustrations that are hidden and the children love discovering them. Like an expression of fright on the face of a tree as a cat sneaks up to Dudley, or the Z patterns on curtains, or in the branches of trees whenever Dudley gets sleepy. It's all so subtle, we had the book for quite a while before we noticed everything. This is a book that the children have never yet tired of and we have had it for at least four years. Definitely one to buy.

An More Intuitive Approach to Calculus
This is my favourite Calculus text. Although I only use it as a supplement to our regular text, I would love to teach my whole course the way Dr. Taylor describes.

Calculus: the Analysis of Functions begins with a graphical tour of the world. Rates of change are approached graphically through rich problems like "Lining up for a Squash court", "the Mile Record", "Optimal Cookie Size". These problems make the student communicate the meaning of a rate of change in various contexts.

Development of rates of change for different types of functions are generally done from a geometric or graphical point of view. Exponential and logarithmic functions are especially well done in my opinion. This is where I replace my traditional text with exercises drawn from Taylor's book.

Antidifferentiation includes a section on continuous probability, not usually found in an introductory text. But this isn't the usual fare.

Those who like a lot of manipulative practice evaluating left and right handed limits, continuity exercises and development from first principles will find this text lacking, but you must include it in your library and you must experience the pleasure of teaching "Taylor-like Calculus"

What A Real Male Should Have on the Best Dressed Bookshelf!
Notice: To any man who has ever wondered out loud: Why me???

Read about the lives, thoughts and observations of three men (a Father, a Son and another son--not by blood, but by sweat and tears!)

This is the treatise on masculinity, and all its twists and turns. If you ever thought about it, but never expressed it, this work will leave you laughing out loud, gasping for air, and rubbing your belly in great glee, at the insights, adventures, and comical carryings-on of three regular "guys" like all of us.

A Must-READ for all Baby Boomer Guys, and WWII sorts.

A Doorway to understanding Global Geographies.
I study Human Geography and for a long time I have been searching for a book such as this. The Geo-economic,political,social,cultural and environmental characteristics of global change are all explored and organised into 5 doorways. I found that the chapter on Geo-Politics was exceptionally good going deeply into the Cold War and the Welfare State. My enthusiasm for this text is not only from what it says but how it has said it. It is clearly written and provides a succinct commentary, making a very good book for anybody interested in Globalistation or for first year students studying it.

The Time has Come....Finally!
I've been waiting for this very book for quite some time now. Carroll's photography has never been collected in a full form like many other photographers. Previous books have been light on material and all too heavy on the photographs of young child-friends. This book gives a more even account of Carroll's photography---even going so far as presenting the photographs as he did so in his own albums. Rather than classify his photographs, his albums show a wondrous variety of images---a skeleton of a fish, a landscape, a child-friend, a famous painter, a sculpture, etc.... Though it concentrates on Carroll's one hobby, Roger Taylor's essay is as good as any biography, being a hundred or so pages long. Edward Wakeling contributes insightful captions to each photograph in the Princeton Collection---for all are included! What more could one ask for? Wakeling, one of the leading experts on Carroll with a database of information, even offers his list of all photographs taken by Carroll, a list that will be continually updated. He even gives his email address for those who may have lost photographs.
An indispensable book for the researcher and a delight for the casual photography fan.

Panoramic photographer captures spirit of local scene
Peter Randall is a New Hampshire native whose gift for capturing his local surroundings on film are only enhanced by his use of a panoramic camera. Using a special camera which records onto a 2.5 by 6.5 inch film, the author has collected images of the local scene which stop the casual browser and command close reading of the details within his compositions of farm, forest, and ordinary town scenes. This is a book to spend a quiet evening examining and exploring what someone with love of place and skill with camera can do
