I am an Ohio State graduate and love OSU football but we also have wonderful legacy in basketball due to Fred Taylor. This is a long overdue recognition of Coach Taylor's success as a basketball coach and more importantly as a mentor to his players. He was always a gentleman and deserved better treatment by the OSU athletic office especially after his team was mugged by the Minnesota team (including Dave Winfield, a reason I always hoped Winfield would fail in baseball since he was a thug along side his team and jerk of a coach, Bill Mussleman). Bobby Knight always loved beating OSU due the way it treated Coach Taylor and it is ironic that Knight admired Fred Taylor but behaved exactly opposite of the manner in which Coach Taylor behaved. It is a testimony to Coach Taylor's class that he never bad mouthed OSU after he was fired. All OSU basketball fans should read this book so they will know that two coaching giants put OSU sports on the highest levels. I give the book 4 stars because I wish the author could have included more actual convesations with Coach Taylor although Coach Taylor's health may have prevented it.

In late 1698, four ships sailed from France under the command of Pierre le Moyne, Sieur d'Iberville.Aboard were some two hundred people destined to become the first settlers of a French post in the lower Mississippi River. Iberville landed first at Dauphin Island near modern Mobile, then moved further East to Ship Island. Sailing up to the great River Iberville visited with the bayou goula Indians on the west bank. Rene Robert cavalier Sieur de la Salle who were a wealthy important immigrant to Canada who heard of the voyage of Marqette and Joliet and comprehended the strategic significance of a fort at the mouth of Mississippi. During the winter of 1682, La Salle led an expedition of fifty-six persons, including ten indians women and three children down the Mississippi to its mouth. He reached salt water on April 6, placed a cross in the mud and claimed the Country for France. He gave the name of Louisiana, in honor of king Louis XIV. That's was the basis for France's claim to Louisiana, though the Spanish Explorer Hernando De Soto had discover the Mississippi and crossed it 140 years earlier. Louisiana was a French-Speaking Spanish colony when the nineteenth century began. Twelve years later Loisiana was one of the United States, successfully operating a system of goverment radically different from the autocracy tempered by ineffiency that had gone before.

We recently traveled through Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia and found this guidebook practically useless and certainly frustrating--definitely not worth its weight. We have used other LPs in the past and found them to be at least adequate but this one doesn't even rate that well. It lacked many important details--such as the time/distances between many points, availability of various transportation options and routes, decent maps--the list goes on and on. Even though prices change often and currencies fluctuate, even a vague idea of prices (is it $10 or $100??) would have been quite useful to help us plan better. Although we ran into many people all 'armed' with the LP, they all had the same complaints.

This book is an adequate guide but it needs improvement in several areas. I used this book during Janurary and February of 2000 when I traveled through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. Last year I used the Lonley Planet-India and found it was much better than Southeast Asia. Here are the weaknesses. 1. The numbers of the locations on the maps should be used in the text describing the location. This would grealy improve you ability to plan your day or route. 2. Maps should be improved. I would be willing to spend a few dollars more for better maps. 3. Hotel, restaurant, etc. names are not printed in bold type. This makes it more difficult to use. 4. It would be very helpful to grade the sites with a priority to reduce the time one spends reading fine print and get on with seeing the country. When I return to this part of the world next winter I will try to find additional books to correct these weaknesses.

I travelled through Thailand, Philippines and Hong Kong using this book. I initially bought this book with weight in mind. I did not want to carry three more LPs along with the other country books (LP Taiwan, Japan). Although much of the information needed to survive was written in the book, it certainly did lack the detailed maps and background information needed to have a care-free journey. SOmetime it certainly was a struggle , especially in Thailand. The Thailand Section prices were extremely outdated. Even in the height on the "asian economic flu", I had to triple the prices listed. The Hong Kong section was adequate, but HK is an efficient and easily travelled city. Of the three, I found the Philippine section the best, but some of the hotel quality ratings are out dated. Please do not stay at the Hotel Mercedes in Cebu!

Grow Your Band's Audience

I thought this book was a HUGE waste of money.
The 'book people' were great and the customer service was awesome - I give them a thumbs up and a five star rating... but the book, itself, is full of ideas that would only appeal to a first-grader. It is a humiliating mockery to all seriously talented musicians. Big thumbs down and a half-star for this book, and pity the poor musicians that are so under-talented that they have to resort to bribery and extortion to get an audience.
Your money is better spent on getting your band's name repeatedly out there and in front of the people so that it becomes familiar and recognized ... As with familiarity grows validity.

When you look into the sands of musicians on the beach of entertainment you wonder how and why you are important. How will you make a difference and be heard. What Joe write's puts all of that in perspective. Pick up a copy and you will be one step closer to gettiing what you want. A voice, a shell, possibly the coast! This book set me on a solid course for career gaols.

Joseph T. Robinson had an interesting career, being elected to Congress in 1902, elected Governor of Arkansas in 1912, in 1913 elected by the Legislature to succeed Jeff Davis (who is the subject of a really outstanding biography: The Wild Ass of the Ozarks: Jeff Davis and the Wocial Basis of Southern Politics, by Raymond Arsenault), and served in the Senate till his sudden death on July 14, 1937, having been the vice-presidential candidate on Al Smith's ticket in 1928. While the early chapters of this book, telling of Robinson's early years and his rise in Arkansas politics are interesting, the account of his Senate years is pedestrian and uninterestingly written. The author has a superficial grasp of the times in which Robinson lived, and while the book is well-footnoted and has a good bibliography, the book is actually a published thesis and was a disappointment to me. I have read a lot of senatorial biographies and must rate this one of the poorer ones.
