The Illustrated West With the Night

A beautiful but often fictional account of a great life
I've recently read the "autobiography" "West With The Night" for a Hight School history class. While I found Markham's book to be a beautifuly spun story of growing up in colonial Kenya and life in the early 1900s, this book left me with more questions than answers. On digging deeper, I found that this book was written by her third husband, Raoul Schumacher. Also, I found that many interesting and scandalous parts of her life had been omitted from this historical tale. However, these things do not change the fact the "West With the Night" is a completly enrapturing tale of a very strong, determined woman. I only advise that you take this story with a grain of salt; and then go read the book "The lives of Beryl Markham" by Errol Trzebinski to get the real deal.

A life-changing read-Even better than Out of Africa!
Beryl Markam's controversial "West with the Night" gives a vivid, personal view of life in colonial Kenya. A geat aviator and race horse trainer, Beryl Markham gives new life to women everywhere.

This book was outstanding in my own mind. There was just not anything that turned me off and made put the book down. Yes, this is science fiction and actually loved it, because the characters were described so well. A person may feel as if they really knew or felt that they may be somewhat alike. I personally do not like science fiction but as much as I enjoyed this, I may just change and widen my reading variety. Considering some fairly difficult words I always stuck with and just tried to understand it. Kotzwinkle has put forth an extraudinary piece of literature and should be recommended for interested readers. To be honest with you this book is not easy and is a little long but in the end I promise that you will be feeling something. This has love, tragedy, and is quite suspensful. It is a wonderful book, and I personally recommend to everyone. joe gainer

Artful synergy¿.
Ntozake Shange's poem, "i live in music", along with Romare Bearden's collages are presented together in this appealing book. The text and the visuals are skillfully paired and they feed each other's expressions.

"i got 15 trumpets where other women got hips

& a upright bass for both sides of my heart"

Shange's words are in turn playful, soulful, artful. The music she describes is encompassing and tangible - a real thing to be felt and true part of our beings.

Bearden's collages and paintings are vivid, engaging images of African American life and culture. The images are expressive and rich illustrations of musicians and singers. "Show Time" and "Fancy Sticks" are nearly audible - one can see the rhythm and song.

Shange and Bearden's talents complement each other so well one would think this had been a concurrent, collaborative effort rather than subsequent assemblage.

Along with i live in music, I highly recommend all the books in this series by Stewart, Tabori & Chang's Art and Poetry series:

"Life Doesn't Frighten Me", poem by Maya Angelou, paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat..... "may i feel said he", poem by e. e. cummings, paintings by Marc Chagall...... "Dance Me to the End of Love", poem by Leonard Cohen, paintings by Henri Matisse

Each one would be a wonderful gift for a teacher, art lover, musician, poet,.... or anyone seeking inspiration. Treat yourself to one - or all.

For all ages.

You will find your own grandmother within these pages.
I'm a 46 year old man that doesn't get emotional but this book constantly brought back memories of my grandmother. Over and over again I saw her reflected in the stories I read. Memories I had long forgotten came back to bring me smiles and tears. The photographs were exceptional in their reflection of the authors feelings. Thank you Linda for finding so many outstanding authors to share with us.

beautiful images with quotes to evoke the most romantic of t
A Vow of Love is a lovely gift book to give yourself or share with a loved one. The photography inside is reminisent of the victorian era. "There is nothing so sweet in life as the promise of young love." The photos and quotes compliment each other perfectly. A nice book to cuddle up with a cup of tea and read on a rainy day.

Great tribute to talented Victorian women botanical artists
Along with the stories of these brilliant women artists and beautiful renditions of their artwork are sprinkled Victorian flower language, poems and quotes that make this an exquisite tabletop book that your guests will not be able to put down. Most of these talented women never received honors while they lived because in their day, women were not given their worth. Many of these ladies used male pseudonyms just to stay employed. A beautiful compliment for those that appreciate the language of herbs and flowers.

a treasure!
i love this book... it is so rhythmical and sensual. i got it for my husband on our wedding day. it was perfect.

...Show me slowly what I only know the limits of....
I'm a great fan of this series of books - each takes a poem and an artist, and blends the words of the poem with the images of the artist to create a harmonious, well-matched whole. Dance Me To The End Of Love is the most successful of the sequence, with Matisse's gliding, extravagantly curvaceous artwork and Leonard Cohen's beautiful song-poem floating around, in and out of each other, the words complementing the images complementing the words. It is a beautiful book to look at and to read, to savour and enjoy. Matisse was an artist whose images had all the flying poise and grace of the dancer, and is the only possible artist who could have complemented Leonard Cohen's song. I am delighted to possess this book, and can read it over and over again, admiring the beauty and vision of the person who set the typeface and layout of the pages. If you love beautiful things, and admire Matisse, this is a book you must have casually tossed onto your coffee table - see how many people lean forward and glance inside, and are riveted immediately.

A great book for lovers
This isn't a book of poetry, it is a book of one poem, beautifully matched with work by Matisse. I have now given it to two different couples for their weddings. Words and pictures to make your heart soar, Cohen and Matisse seemed to be talking to each other with their art.

Great book for the price!
I just bought this book and it totally blew me away. Contrary to another review here, I find almost every page of this book to be extremely informative and jam-packed with information on the real attack and the making of the movie, with LOTS of movie photos and a lot of historical photos too. Also included are short bios of movie characters, quotes about the movie and the event from cast and crew, and storyboards and a timeline of the events of that day. I HIGHLY recommend this!

Hurrah Hurrah Hurrah
The Book is a joy to read and look at. The movie was very good, and for the critics, when do they ever say a movie is good. I have yet meet a co-worker or friend, who has had one bad thing to day about Pearl Harbor the movie. But the critics are my judge of movies if they say its bad then its a Must go see, for you know you will enjoy it.

Terrific Book, "Pearl Harbor: The Movie and the Moment"!!!
If you liked the movie, which I did, I'm sure you would like "Pearl Harbor: The Movie and the Moment". Not only does it have plenty of color images, movie stills, sketches, storyboards, maps, blueprints, computer graphics, behind the scenes information, and more, it also tells about the actual history of what happened on December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. I liked reading the actors, producers, and writers comments in the book. I especially liked reading about the Eagle Squadron. Teaches you Eagle Squadron slang in the book!

I think that even if you didn't like the movie that much, this book has plenty of information about the history of Pearl Harbor so I'm sure you would be satisfied with it. Enjoy!

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: A Portrait of Ang Lee's Epic Film

A slight companion to a great film
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon deserves a more thorough look at its production, cast, and impact on modern cinema. The essays are informative if very short. One in particular is helpful since it lists many worthwhile films from Asia that would be of interest to fans of CTHD.

Reading the screenplay is of little interest, since you can watch the DVD or video.

...The music is wonderful.

Just buy the dvd
the book does not tell you much about the actors, the director, the genre, or other related subjects. its okay to browse through while your at a bookstore but not for purchase.

Great... For all dedicated fans.
This is a GREAT book... It includes the screenplay of the film, which, is nice to read once in awhile when not watching the DVD. It's filled w/ wonderful photos from the movie and set, and has many quotes and commentaries from actors and Ang Lee about certain situations while filming... and about the film. It's very entertaining to read, but I just wish there was more information about the actors included in the pages. There are comments about them and their performances here and there... and the quotes are great, but the background info on all of the actors is just not there. But all dedicated crouching tiger fans should get it, b/c it's just so nicely laid out and is such good quality. I mean, who cares if they leave a little out? It's so fun to look at!
