An Important Overview of a Century of Americana
For many years it has been the practice of critics and art aficionados to relegate "popular artists" the likes of Norman Rockwell and the Wyeth clan to the bin of kitsch. Time heals and alters and distance is kind as the current resurgence of appreciation of these and other artists of the land testifies. Norman Rockwell now is considered an important American artist, sensitive to basic issues of what makes America the land of the common man's dream. With this beautifully designed and written tome the same adulation should follow for the Wyeth clan. The authors (Betsy Wyeth among them) had the good idea to show the seeds of the very familiar Wyeth imagery in the work of Howard Pyle, an artist known primarily as an illustrator along the lines of over the edge fantasy adventure books. His pupil N.C. Wyeth took up the torch, primarily emulating Pyle's style but taking it to a new level. His works of isolation, thwarted desire, and simple American traditions are absorbed by his son Andrew Wyeth who won favor among collectors of realist art during the time the country was running after Modernism, Expresionism, Abstraction. And finally Jaime Wyeth, son of Andrew, has been a constant presence with his quasi-surreal take on many of the same subjects as his progenitors. The circle comes round with Pyle and Jaime Wyeth embracing the more perverse subjects - an interesting century wheel turning round and round.

The color reproductions are generous and well selected. Many of the well know Wyeth images are excluded, but in their place we are treated to images we have never seen. This is a beautiful volume and a tender one, a memento of what our childhood in the 20th Century was like before the madness currently painted hit.

amazing
The images floor me. If a picture is worth a thousand words.... then this collection speaks incalculable volumes.

For the non-art initiated, the book is a feast for the imagl
For the non-art initiated, the book is a feast for the imagination as well as the eyes. I bought the book because I come from the mid-coast of Maine, like the Wyeths. But when I took the time to look at the book on a night we lost power due to a snow storm, I found the views conjured stories up in my mind to match the Wondrously Strange images. I've driven by the Wyeth Center a thousand times, but made a point to visit to see for my self. I'm also fortunate to have a copy signed by Jamie Wyeth, and hope to keep as a treasure for a long time.

Mad Money: When Markets Outgrow Governments

Complexities of global economics deciphered
The global economy, especially those aspects dealing with global finance, often appear to be intimidating in their complexity. Susan Strange decodes processes of finance and monetary policy and puts them in terms that just about anyone can understand. There is, in fact, nothing that complex about these processes at all. The metaphor of "casino capitalism" still holds...and they are playing with your money. One would do well to read this in combination with a book by George Soros. Comprehensive, but readable. A great book.

It`s all true!
i guess this is the first book telling about the sometimes really strange german ways. i, as i am from germany, can just say: the author is right. the book contains everthing important (or not important but funny) and will probably do very well, helping you to understand us strange germans. i am now in the us as an exchange student for 11 month and brought it as a present for my host family - it was real fun reading it together and i guess it made the life with me a little easier for my host family. but: only 4 stars because some things aren`t up-to-date

Truly Spectacular
Susan Stern is a remarkable author. She has helped me not just to understand German culture more, but also my understanding of my native American Culture. I met Susan Stern once at a convention at the University of South Carolina with a few of my fellow German students. She is just as remarkable in person as in this book. If you plan on traveling to Germany, be it for Business, to live there, or for tourism, I highly recomend this book. Even if you're not traveling to Germany, this book is great for understanding and comparing your own culture with that of others. One last thing. Read the up-dated book which was published in 2000, not the 1998 version.

Is that me?
I'm amazed! This book shows a detailed understanding of the German psyche. I as a German myself was totally amazed how highly accurate the descriptions are. Although the author sometimes strays a little from the truth (as I see it) in order to help understanding the Strange German Ways, I feel quite at home reading this book. As I have been to the US for a year and tried to explain Germany and the Germans to 'you folks', I would have been really grateful for this book as a companion. This is definitely a 'must have' if you deal with Germans a lot or intend to visit Germany.

Recent past performance is no indication of future outcomes
Susan Strange offers an excellently argued understanding of how the recent emphasis on national and global market forces has ham-strung political actors. However, as recent events in Russia and S.E. Asia have shown, political actors may still have the upper hand. While the book is marvelously presented, its thesis places too much emphasis on the here and now in its efforts to understand the future of political systems. My three star rating belies the great joy that this book must bring to economists who gain an opportunity to see the world as their domain.

Strange Meeting
Published in Audio Cassette by MacMillan Audio Cassette (1996)
Author: Susan Hill
Amazon base price: $49.95
Average review score:

A tragedy-tinged tale of friendship in the trenches.
Set against the horrors of the First World War, this novel portrays the friendship of two young officers. Hilliard is a veteran of combat, a reserved and isolated young man who prefers the stark reality of the front line, where he follows orders and makes only simple decisions based on life or death, to the political and social complications of his previous existence in England. He is initially displeased to find he will be sharing quarters with a new officer, Barton, but he soon warms to the open honesty and affectionate nature of his room-mate. Barton causes him to re-evaluate his approach to the war, to family, and to his whole philosophy of living.

When the inevitable happens, and Hilliard and Barton are sent up to the front line together, Hilliard sees the atrocities of combat with new eyes. He also sees the effect they have on Barton, and for perhaps the first time in his life Hilliard feels the pain of another human being.

An essentially slow-moving novel, this is a sensitive imaginative account of the horrors of World War One. However, it lacks the passion and veracity of, for example, "All Quiet On The Western Front", and shares something of the coldness and distance from humanity of its central character, Hilliard. The plot marches at a sedate, heavy pace towards its inevitable, and predictable conclusion, stopping off along the way to reveal set pieces of battle and bloody demise to the reader. A rather depressing and leaden novel, it perhaps does not deserve the reputation it has gained in the nearly thirty years since publication.

Strange & Amazing FACTS? ...
More like Strange and Amazing FALSEHOODS About Star Trek! This author appears to have done little research to compile this book, and any true Star Trek fan can easily dismiss it as ludicrous fiction!

After all, we die-hard fans all know that the Enterprise is a CONSTITUTION class vessel. So why does Mr. Cohen state that it is a CONSTELLATION class ship? This is only one example of several errors, so if you are looking to expand your knowledge of the Star Trek universe, BEWARE of this book!
