Outstanding! Our 15 month old loves to have it read to him.
This book is wonderful. Our fifteen month old loves to have it read to him. The illustrations are wonderful. There are a number of different animals, and our baby loved to point them out. The pages are nice and large with lots, but not too much, to look at. The text is equally interesting and pleasant, and its rhyming nature makes it pleasant to read out loud

Wonderful war bio
Truly an amazing biography of the allied Philippines General. It is a shame this book is out of print as it provides insight found in few other WWII books. It really should be part of any comprehensive World War Two reference library (personal or public).

A classic story with AMAZING illustrations!
Ann Keay Beneduce retells Jonathan Swift's classic "Gulliver's Adventures in Lilliput" here, and her slightly softened retelling is just right for both younger and older children (my five- and eight-year olds both loved this alike). It's such a great story, and holds up so beautifully despite the passing of centuries. Every child likes to imagine being bigger, so Gulliver's amazing transformation into the gigantic human among the Lilliputians plays into their most daring fantasies.

The real stand-out here, beyond the simple lines of this wonderful tale, are Gennady Spirin's sumptuous illustrations. Spirin never hits a false note here. Gulliver's clothing is historically correct, and when note is made in the text of the different Lilliputian fashions, you realize that Spirin has given all the little men and women ever-so-slightly-different spins on typical clothing of the time--enough to make them seem a little offbeat, but not enough to make them otherwordly. Spirin is able, through this simple artistic device, to subtly emphasize what Gulliver and his tiny friends have in common, rather than the differences among them.

The colors are gorgeous, and Spirin's work with anything metallic--be it fabric, a gun, or a flagpole--is something to behold. Everything glows, and the detail is magnificent. You could sit and gaze at the illustrations for hours and never be bored--and always find something new to admire. Really a wonderful, wonderful book!

Buy This Book!
It is a pleasure to read Jonathan Strong's *The Haunts of His Youth.* *Haunts* features the stories and novella that originally appeared in his first book (*Tike and Five Stories*) as well as several acclaimed pieces that he wrote in the seventies. These stories work under a quiet pressure that simmers for pages at a time. In "Quimby," everything is aglow, whether it be the lovely jar of fireflies that rests on the young narrator's nightstand, the lost pearl that he finds in the bushes, or the Fourth of July sparklers that brighten the night. In "Suburban Life," the reader can almost feel Davey's sunburn, can almost taste the halved grapefruit that Davey's girlfriend eats with heartbreaking sensuality. The suspended eroticism of "Zwillingsbruder" is tantalizing. This story is most interesting for its dialogue, which is printed as if part of a staged play. With this story, Strong invites the reader into a world of frustration and longing not unlike that of Joyce's *Dubliners.* Strong's penultimate story, "Tike's Days," is the book's highlight. This novella brings the reader into Tike's world of displacement, beautiful women, and German opera. Buy *The Haunts of His Youth*: it is an extraordinary introduction to this prolific writer's work, and you'll want to read more.

This book-tape set has to be one of the best books on tape that rabbit ears has produced. Jack Nicholson's smooth magical voice is just perfect with predictably great music from Bobby McFerrin. A must for every child's library!

Great children's book for subway lovers
Silly and fun. Every child will love the story about poor Jonathan who couldn't clean his room thanks to the crowds of people leaving the subway station that was magically connected to it. The illustrations are wonderfully rendered.

Jonathan Small and Elizabeth Blue - a story of friendship
This is a wonderful book about friendship. Although not written as poetry, the metre and often-rhyming prose make it pure pleasure to read aloud. Children love the rhythm and the story of how a friendship happened between two children who lived on opposite sides of a big hill. The places they went before they met up with each other make a truly delightful story.
